thanks for everyone's help.

my degree is in psychology, but the job i find doesn't have to exactly be IN the field.

i may look for a gov't job, not sure yet what exactly i want, so i'm keeping my options open.

i didn't know about some of the sites mentioned in this thread, so thanks to everyone's helpful hints and suggestions.

any company that has more than $100,000 worth of contracts with the federal government must, by law, register any job openings with the virginia employment commission. this includes subsidiaries of a parent company with contracts. there are also many other jobs that go through there. it covers the entire state.

the other job sites listed in this thread may help also.

And don't register your car in VA, they tax it! Or did they stop doing that?

if you register with them they will compare your qualifications to their database and contact you with job oppurtunities that match what you tell them.

their still is a personal property tax but with vehicles it has all but gone away. the governor passed a tax relief thing for cars a few years ago. boats, motor homes, car trailers, campers, etc, still get the full whammy.

all things said, when we moved here from pa our overall tax burden remained near the same, maybe a little lower.

Scorch - If they still have those bars outside the main gate, they're always looking for Hootchy-Kootchy dancers.

Ha.
The last time I was at the gates, there was a heavy machine gun mounted there with sandbags all around and some very unfriendly looking navy guys behind it.
Pretty scary driving up to it. ;-)

Weird isn't it, when a military base starts looking like a---military base. Your description brought back the mental picture of DaNang and Saigon.

Well alrighty then, if you're going to be so damned fussy, you're just going to make me get serious about helping you with this job thing.

I don't know what you do in the Psych field, but there are lots of govt jobs in the area...there may not be any openings, but there are lots of positions (and who the hell wants a job when they can have a position?) The Navy has an Alcohol Rehab Center and Family Programs in Norfolk. They also have something related by the LaFayette Bridge. The Naval Hospital is in Portsmouth and no doubt they have positions. Langley AFB has a hospital in Newport News with a Social Services/Family Programs Division. Ft Eustis in Newport News/Yorktown has a hospital and Family Services. No doubt there is a lot more I can't remember since I retired in '92. I ran the same thing for the Coast Guard and networked with most of these places, although anyone I knew is likely gone or wouldn't admit knowing me anyway (Could you see yourself telling them "some guy named Snake Eyes sent me"?) All of the Bases have a Civilian Personnel Office with a list of open positions. Some of the hospitals would likely have their own Personnel office and you wouldn't have to deal with the larger, more bureaucratic, Base P.O. I'm sure your resume is already to go, just keep it flexible to accomodate the vagaries of individual position descriptions.

Remember this, if you get a job in one of these places, you can still moonlight with the Hootchy-Kootchy dancing. That's where the real money is. Good luck.

plus, most (if not all) of the money you make dancing won't be reported to Big Brother (that means its all tax fee baby!)

When you signup, be sure to make your search(s) general. I have found, but not qualified, for many psch. related positions, using "social science."
