and the Everest Challenge 29K
Since we bailed on our long trip, I had a few more days off work. Drove to NV with Calhiker to try Mt Dubois again. Its the 2nd highest desert peak (13,559'), White Mtn is the highest (14,246'). Its a deceiving route, that seems to go on and on and on, and doesn't seem to get you closer to the summit. You'll see in the pictures.

Photos of the bike race and our hike

This was my second unsuccessful attempt at this peak.

Saturday we we took a side trip through Bishop and stopped at South Lake to watch the Everest Challenge 29K Bike ride. Greg Drake did Day 1 (Millpond-Mosquito Flat-Pine Creek Roadend-South Lake stretch) in 6 hrs 15 min, which was 120 miles, 15,465 feet of climbing. He also went on to win Day 2, which was 86 miles, 13,570 feet of climbing, and won the overall race.

The first time I tried Dubois, I got there late and didn't get much sleep (got lost, pulled over, hiked by myself with contact via FSR radios with the group I was supposed to meet), and altitude got me. This time I took an extra day to drive up and acclimatize. It was still tough. Got up higher than last time, but still had a ways to go. There will be a next time, just not sure when.

Those biking legs WERE nice. Greg Drake rode effortlessly. He wasn't struggling like the others, form was smoothe, talked as he rode by, smiled as we drove by, pulled away from Drew Miller like it was nothing! The guy was awesome! Then he did it again the next day!

Anyone else wondering just what this peak would do to the average hiker if Snow Nymph hasn't climbed it in two attempts? Yikes...
