probably have to make reservations at the campground, unless you're planning on getting there early, before the visitor's center closes.

last year i slept in the car. by the time i got there it was midnight and me and the person i drove with were too tired to set up.

the rest of the crew that was in their cars also opted for sleeping in their car. i might do the same this year, but would like to stay with the crowd at the campground if that's cool with you, spammy! just lemme know how much the cost is and i'll split it with you (for the campground fee).”

“yea! that'd be cool. i'll bring some as well if i have room left in my car (i'll have 3 hikers with all their gear and my car is small). but any room i have left over, i'll throw a few logs in.

“Campground fee? Room at the sites? Dahlgren is a free hiker's camp site. Building with showers/toilets (closed this time of year), and a large area in front for a ton of tents. No caretaker, no reservations. I hiked by it 2 or 3 years ago and read about it in the Thru-Hiker's Companion.

Go to the link below, do a search in that page (ctrl-F in IE) for "Dahlgren". It will find 2 hits, with info about Dahlgren and Old South Mountain in, including its phone number.

“Good idea - bring firewood. I've stayed at Dahlgren in season. It's a nice, roomy site. No need to worry about "extra space". Just pitch your tent anywhere...

PhantomSoul and MarkO - I can pick you up at Mark's house, but I need directions or a cell# so I can find you. I'll be coming down I-83 and be in your vicinity around 2:00 PM on Friday the 14th.

EarthNSky - Let me know where I can pick you up in Lancaster or somewhere nearby - I actually live about 20 miles south of Lancaster, near the Buck on 272 south, so if you'd want to leave your car somewhere in that area, you can ride along with me.

techntrek - is your brother coming along? That would put 6 total in my Explorer so it's do-able.

Excess gear that can't be loaded inside can be put up on the luggage rack above - just make sure your packs are in some kind of waterproof wrapping in case the weather turns ugly. Anyway, we can manage this somehow.

If all goes well, we should probably be at the OSM Inn by around 4:00 or so. We can set up at Dahlgren, then have supper somewhere and come back to camp for a campfire, etc. I'll be bringing wood for the fire also.

Oh, yeah, my buddy, Jim Beam is coming along on this trip, so we have to have some room for him...
