MarkO, only 70 miles GMAB! I have to drive 4 hours to get to anything remotely matching what I consider good backpacking country. If I decide to do this I figure 8 hours minimum and I haven't looked at a map yet.”

“My guess it'll be more like about 6 1/2 hours for you. Just get on 81 north up to Hagerstown, MD then US 40 Alt to the South Mountain Inn just East of Boonsboro...”

“I looked at a map last night and figuring in for breaks 6.5 would be an extreme minimum...hey all that coffee has to go somewhere.

I do have a question about companions...anybody against dogs? My girl loves to hike.”

“sticks, I think you're right. I was figuring it took me about 9 hours (with breaks) to get to Grayson Highlands, and it's about 2 hours (+ or -) to the South Mountain Inn from my home...

Looking at the map last night I would come via I-71 to Columbus and pick up I-70, estimated milage would be about 450. That is a good 8 hours in my book. It just depends on the traffic flow...if they drive 80 I drive 80. I can make it to Joplin MO. in 10 hours because everyone drives 80-90mph.”

“Is anyone planning to spend Friday night at Dahlgren campground, just south of the Inn on the AT? It is free, and that time of year it should be empty or at least minimally occupied.”

“I dunno about this coming hike, but I understand that last year, the mercury recorded 17*F... Yep that's pretty cold!”

“well last year at that time we were hiking in the snow. it was brrrrr brrrrr cold. you could cut glass that's how cold it was LOL.”

“Squilax - I'll probably camp at Dahlgren Friday night. Much nicer to wake up Saturday morning and relax before meeting everyone than getting up way early and rushing. No services available there after October, but no big deal.

I see you're from PA, so would you be coming down 83 around 695 to 70? I'll be leaving from work which is right at 695 and 70 so do you want to carpool from there Friday afternoon?”

“If we call ahead, they will let a limited number of vehicles park in the far back section of their lot. I'd suggest that if there are going to be more than 2 or 3 vehicles on Friday night that we put most of them up in the parking lot at Washington Monument SP - they have a hiker parking area there - then shuttle the folks back to the inn. In the morning, we can just take them back up to get their cars.
