He does gain substantial weight but his health decline is amazing! And undeniable. He had doctors doing all kind of tests on him and they asked him to quit after 2 1/2 weeks (I think).

yea i heard he gained like 30 lbs or something? and that his cholesterol, BP, etc went sky rocket. WHY would anyone do that?

He didn't know it would happen. He certainly didn't think the food was healthy but not that bad. According to McD's their food is healthy!

The amazing part to me was his physical beforehand. He was in great health. His doctors 3 plus a registered dietician expected a rise in cholesterol and a little weight gain. His doctors were absolutely astonished at the outcome, they were nearly pleading with him to quit on day 21.I think his motivation was part publicity but more about curiosity, the whole movie isnt about him and McD's but about americans and our gluttony, laziness and food culture. Really good stuff.

McDonaldsIsYourKindOfPlace....HamburgersInYourFace
Boy did I make a mistake last night, Birch.

Got home late from work and had to bolt out of the house. And for the first time in a long time I went to Micky D's for a 1/4 pounder. I use to order a grill order (extra crap) so I know it would be made fresh, but last night they served me the worst burger I think I EVER ate. Somehow they put on extra mayo, and I didn't even order it, but was too far down the road to turn around. All I could think of was "Those F-in bozos!"

Serves me right, I guess. All those times I got kicked out of the parkinglot 20 years ago for skateboarding finally caught up with me.

Had a similar experience when my wife and I were on a day trip. Stopped at a place that was praised to have good food. Not a good experience. Complained, paid the bill, and left. It was not a FAST food place by any means.

I stopped by the local D's a couple of weeks ago. I ordered a large coffee and a bagel, egg and cheese saminitch. I order that because they have to make it fresh and I don't want to eat any *meat* that comes from them. I always get the "did you want bacon, sausage or ham on that bagel?". No, I think to myself. I might be stupid, but I'm smart enough to know that I didn't forget to order *meat*. But this time was different, as the chickie-poo asked me if I wanted any *bagel sauce* on that? Bagel sauce I asked? Yeah, bagel sauce! (the one I go to, you have to order with a person, not through "the box"). She must've been new, because she gives me the low down on the bagel sauce, after which I rely, "No, thank you".

Once in a while, we'd get a *Happy Meal* for the boy, but get the chicken strips instead of teh burger. I don't know if that's any better, but that's not really the point. My point is that maybe I should rent this movie with my wife so we can upchuck together. She's more prone to stop than I do, but I'd like to stop it all togther!

I'm pretty amazed you liked this movie, Birch.

I think it lends a good deal of creedence to my argument about corporate food. Of course, there's also the issue of a reduced physical activity, but I thought the bits about food being used like a drug and getting kids hooked early was informative.

I really thught he went over the top on quite a bit of the film, though. Who throws up from finishing a supersize meal?

Phaedrus, I like the movie loads, but like arguing with you more. I have to pay for the movie and return it in two days...but here I pay and get access to you 24/7-365 that is a far better return. BTW I never said I agreed with the premise, I was entertained though.

I went 10 months without beef and the first time I ate I almost puked. He hammed it up big time though, his liver didnt lie.

It was funny as I was watching this I chuckled because I knew I would post about it and I knew you'd take the approach you did. Classic!

My wife loved it. I didn't see it. I figgered I didn't need to pay to see a documentary tell me that eating only McDonalds food and not excersizing for a month was bad for me. I had second thoughts after hearing how much she liked it, and how much my son and others have enjoyed it.

Ped, its entertaining for sure. I dont see it as being "scientific" in a reliable repeatable process but its interesting to see the effects. I would love to see his hypotheses replicated in a bigger group, lets say 1000 people. He had an agenda and a goal in mind. Rent it though, its fun.

Birch - It would be unethical to do it as a controlled research project. No ethics or human subjects committee would approve.

I agree it has little scientific value - first off, if I understand right, he went from a very differet kind of diet (no animal fats, or very low animal fats) and suddenly switched. Secondly, he ate things he didn't feel like eating. Third, he went to an extreme no one does, or almost no one does.

I don't believe a weekly fast food burger and fries is much, if at all, worse than a weekly bowl of gourmet (i.e. high fat) ice cream.

I probably will rent it some time, especially on one of those "twofer" days at the video store.

Supersize Me
Haven here (Roam & Ewker know me..Deb from NC)

God...I just watched 'Supersize Me'
On my honor
I will try to never ever
darken the doors of McD's again (unless it is the only toilet available for 10 miles).

You DO NOT WANT to see how McNuggets are made....In one of their new salads (bacon bits/ranch) there is more fat than a Big Mac.
The guy's sex drive..'petered out'(literally & figuratively).

Heard of 'Death by chocolate' but
this is worse.

that's true pedxing, he also limited his exercise to so many steps per day - 2000 or something.

I wonder what the outcome would be if a similar experiment was done, except the person ate carefully off the menu (choosing salad, frozen yogurt, water, etc) and continued to exercise.

Just saw Supersize me last night.

I think McDonald's burgers are icky anyways, but after seeing the movie, I'm even less inclined to go there!

The thing that was truly frightening was the guy who had ingested something like 19,000+ Big Macs (2 or 3 times a day!)...

Absolutely nasty...
definitely made me and Thinkbubelz want to exercise more and eat less junk food.

Although, on the very rare occasion that we do go to McDonald's we never supersize the meals--we prefer the "medium" size (if we do get the meals.)

One point he made was that the yogurt cups were actually pretty bad for you and the same with the salads (if you eat them "fully loaded" with the toppings and sauces.) Some of them were far worse than what you could possibly imagine...

Actually, one of the really "eye-opening" facts was when he said that some of the drinks at some of the fast-food places are a half gallon in size?! I think that because they usually use a fluid oz. sizing on the drinks, people don't realize that 64 oz. = 1/2 gallon... if they marketed it as a 1/2 gallon, probably no one would actually want to drink something that big!

Yikes... and all of the sugar and fat that he consumed was absolutely incredible as well..

I used to go to Mcdonalds about once or twice a month. Lately, I've stayed away from the place altogether for about 7 or 8 months.

I do occasionally stop by a local burrito establishment and order the carne asada burrito. It's probably just as bad as a big mac.

a year or 2 ago, Thinkbubelz & I gave up meats (except seafood and chicken) and junk foods for Lent. We also tried to stay away from processed foods as well.... It was amazing how great we felt--much more energized! One day during Lent, we got a bit swamped at work and grabbed a sandwich at Blimpies-- It was really incredible, but after having mostly salads and veggies for 3 weeks, the Blimpie's best sub made me feel really bloated and icky....Of course, after Lent, we slowly went back to our old eating habits. :-(

After watching Supersize Me, we're thinking of going back to the less-processed foods route....at the very least, we'll probably stay away from fried or fast foods for a while!
