Cool. At Chatfield (Chosen Valley) High School, which I cover, they have six boy and six girl homecoming king and queen candidates. It was pretty cool to see at that school the short, chunky, not spectacular looking, non-football player guy was elected king. Guess he's the class clown -- and apparently well-liked! He seemed a very nice kid. The only one with divorced parents, to boot! (oh gasp!! lol)

And other than that, homecoming "maid???" First time I've heard that term used. Is that a southern thing? Around here the underclassmen elected -- both boys and girls -- are typically called attendants.

lizs - You have never heard of a yound lady being called a 'maid'?
We have the Homecoming Queen and her Court.

Great story stove, thanks.

There are people and stories about them like this in small and large towns, north, south, east and west.

Our little town, the town I lived near before living in a metropolis of 95,000, elected a boy with cystic fibrosis as homecoming king. He also was a cheerleader, and actually cheered when he had enough breath and energy to yell. It was funny watching him escort a girl that was quite a bit taller than him, but the look of pride on his face was worth a million bucks. Thanks for posting this, SS.

I also did a story on a boy with MS in our town, who's in a wheelchair. Average life span is only till the late teens. His mom said how kids mostly love him. When he first moved to school kids might have teased him a bit, but as she said, he liked the attention, didn't know it was mean... and everyone moved on with being friends. He won the Halloween contest a year ago when he was costumed as a race car driver, with the wheelchair made into his car.

Ok, Stovey, never heard "maid" used for homecoming royalty. That smacks of non-PC, me thinks, and would have us nawtherners squawking! lol. Also, you don't have a king... or lower classmen guy attendants?? hmmmmmmm..... That just doesn't seem right.

At my old school
Usually the Court is escorted onto the football field at halftime by the captains of the team. It's the girls chance to shine, and anyway, the guys will be needed on the field to play soon.

Hey Lizs, you Old Maid
www.dictionary.com

5 entries found for maid.
maid ( P ) Pronunciation Key (md)
n.

1.
1. An unmarried girl or woman.
2. A virgin.
2. A woman servant.
3. A housemaid or chambermaid.

Lizs - Outside of referring to a servant, I've seen it used most often as "young maid," with reference to a young girl. But then there was:

Would I had died a maid, And never seen thee, never borne thee son. --Shak.

And, surely, you've played the card game, Old Maid.

I prefer "Old Beeyotch Crony" for myself. You can use OBC for short. :-)

I was surprised when I saw the first entry on this page which said, "Sweet Freshman Maid." I had no clue what the story was going to be about.

In the PC world, "maid" implies something, maybe not quite derogatory, but certainly on the way there. I work at a paper and have to watch out for that kinda thing all the time. Heck, I caught crap for using the word "gals" in a story. It was about 3 women runners. And I had used the term "women" and "trio" enough. I won't use "girls" or "ladies" (again, implications) but I thought "gals" was fairly safe. Wrong!

In the years I have been working with the mentally and physically disabled my favorite people to work with were the ones with downs. The most fun and loving people you’ll ever meet.

I heard a great story from Italy on NPR the other morning. An 80-some year old man’s wife died and he put an ad out for a family who would like a grandpa. He said he made $600 odd dollars to help pay the bills and contribute to the family. A family took him in and they love each other very much and they refused to take his money too!

The HS that my boyfriend teaches at has only a Homecoming Princess, I think its called. It wasn't a queen. The girls were escortd on the football field by their parents. No runner ups were announced, only the winner. No boys, either, which I thought was pretty strange.

grumpy sounds so lame....

doesn't have quite the same meaning as
"you b1tch!"

In W.Va., Police Hold Six In Case of Alleged Torture
Victim, Who Is Black, Remains in Stable Condition in Hospital

By Paul Lewis
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, September 13, 2007; A03

BIG CREEK, W.Va., Sept. 12 -- The curtains on the trailer home were closed, a shopping cart of empty beer cans was dumped by the porch and rats scurried across the trash-strewn yard. The yellow police tape attached to the porch rail gave the only hint of the brutal and bizarre crime that authorities allege took place last week in a trailer home here in the southwest corner of West Virginia.

Police said six people, including three women, held a 20-year-old woman captive for at least a week. During that time, the victim, who is black, was beaten, stabbed, raped and tortured, all the while being subject to racial slurs from her white tormentors, police said.

According to court complaints and interviews with law enforcement officials, defendants cut her hair, made her eat dog and rat feces, placed a cable around her neck, poured hot water over her body and forced her to lick blood and drink water from a toilet.
