Poor Spike
What thread has the Rainbow Bridge story in it? My boyfriend's family had to put their dog down yesterday. His mom is pretty broken up, and I thought if I sent her the story it would make things a little easier.

sorry to hear about spike. spike'll be waiting for his owners on the other side of the rainbow bridge!

i still can't read that story without crying.

there's actually a better one... about a loyal dog and his owner and one day he's sick and all he asks of his owner is to make his pain stop. it's the saddest thing i've ever read in my life. i clipped out the article and saved it but i'm not sure exactly where it's at.

the greatest eulogy i've ever read:

Near this spot
are deposited the remains of one
who possessed beauty without vanity
strength without insolence
courage without ferocity
and all the virtues of man without his vices
This praise which would be
unmeaning flattery
if inscribed over human ashes is but a just tribute to the memory of
Boatswain, a dog
who was born at Newfoundland, may 1803,
and died at Newstead Abbey,
November 18, 1808.

How could a dog have all the virtues of a human?

That got me crying
(the website)

I started thinking of all my now gone pets romping around and lying in the sun.

Very sorry to hear, and my full sympathy to his family. We lost our dog a few weeks ago. There is a reason for everything, even the sucky parts of life. Things will get better, time is the best healer.

Why Dogs don't live as long as people.
Out of the mouths of Babes!

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a
ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners; Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it
Would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt Shane could learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's
Family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little
boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or
confusion.

We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud
About the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next
Stunned me - I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.
He said, "Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a
Good life - like loving everybody and being nice, right?" The
four-year-old continued, "Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Jeesh, ChuckD, way to make me cry at work! That story is something else.

Spike was a good dog, but certainly not like his name would leave you to believe. He was more of a wuss. He loved to go get the paper or the mail at the end of the driveway, and loved to be scratched under the collar. He followed my boyfriend's mom around everywhere. The only person he really wanted home was his mom.

They had Spike cremated, but I don't know where he'll end up yet. Either on the mantle (which I think is kind of creepy) or in the backyard.

It'll be weird to go to the house now and not have Spike barking at the door before you ring the bell.

BTW, I got that in a email, I'm not a vet, but I was raised on a farm.

Nice Story Chuck D.

It hits home, I took my dog in for a biopsy yesterday. She's got a sprawling tumor beteen her paw pads. She turns 12 in November.

She didn't want to be left with the Vet, but went in willingly when I told her too. I teared up as soon as I was out of the Vet's office.

I've never had a pet until I got my cats 5 years ago. The most we ever got my mom and dad to agree to was a hampster. I can't imagine how hard it'll be to let go when the time comes for my little lemon cat Renee and my obnoxious-I-want-to-kill-him Pewter. They sure do a number on ya.

Dogs are amazing. Pets are amazing in general. Both my chihuahua and African Gray Parrot are unbelievable.

If only I had the video camera running when this happened. I could have won some big prize on one of those video shows where they pay bucks.

My parrot was walking along the couch cushions, and he was looking down at my dog and talking to her. He will call her by name too and he knows that she is Capri, it's not just a word I use. Capri will walk by him and Merlin will call after her.

One day I was calling my dog, and my parrot Merlin was calling her at the same time. There we were both calling, Capri! The dog looked at him and then at me. I think she was confused to have us both call her and me and my parrot were at different ends of the room.

I've told this story before, but I will again. My parrot is sitting on the back of the couch and facing the curtains, which I open to reveal the backyard garden. They open and he says "beautiful". I nearly passed out. Also funny was when the curtains were closed, he would go to the separation in the curtain to pull it aside to look out into the backyard. I have a pic of that if I could only find it.

This is the Rainbow Bridge story my friend has on her page after her dog passed on.

THE RAINBOW BRIDGE
Just this side of heaven is a place called "The Rainbow Bridge."
When a beloved pet dies who has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to the Rainbow Bridge.

It is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

There is always plenty of food, water and sunshine;

Our friends are warm and comfortable.

Those old and frail animals are young again, restored to health and vigor,

Those who have been hurt and maimed are made whole and strong again.

The animals play all day;

They are happy and content with each other.

But, there is only one thing missing.

They are not with their special person who loved them on earth;

The one had to be left behind.

Then the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks in the distance.

The bright eyes are intent.

The eager body quivers.

Suddenly he breaks away from the group,

Flying over the green grass;

His legs carry him faster and faster.

You have been seen.

And when you and your special friend meet,

You take him in your arms and embrace.

The happy kisses rain upon your face.

Your hands again caress the beloved head.

You look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet.

And then, together, you cross the Rainbow Bridge.

Never to be separated.
