Happened tonight
I was in NJ tonight to be there when my K9 partner and friend of 9 years was finally put to sleep. I hated that feeling of god making that decision but cancer had done the damage and I only helped things along. Thanks to all for you kind words and the e-mail sent. Pumba will live on in our memories and he will be with me on every hike.

jackcanine, sorry to hear about your dog passing. That is always an incredibly difficult and painful loss. I dread the day my dogs go for their long run.

birch, the same with me. When my dog goes, I'll have to be scrapped off the floor.

I told my husband that since she is a 3-1/2 pound chihuahua, that we will bury her in as tiny a container that will fit her, then I want her in my casket with me when I go.

I'll bury her, not too deep, and she will have to be dug up. Plus, if I move from wherever I live when she is buried, I plan on digging her up and taking her to the new place.

I never had a dog before, so I am really struck by her love, protectiveness, understanding, devotion etc., since I only owned cats before. She's truly amazing. Nothing against cats, but dogs are even capable of saving lives.

I'd risk my life to save my dog if she were in some kind of jeopardy.

Jack, sorry to hear about Pumba. It's a tough decision to make to have to go through that. I put my pup, Zeke, down last Oct. 16 and still think of her everyday.

All our sympathies. Our dog died 3 weeks ago, so the memory of the ordeal is still fresh in my memory. Time does heal the pain - in time.

Having had to take that same step, I understand, my friend. When we cannot alleviate their suffering, it's time to help them along. It's all we can do for them.

Ghoulbeet, you are correct about that. Our companions depend on us to put them to sleep when it's time.

I think my cousin wished she could have put her husband to sleep when he turned up with mesothelioma cancer from asbetos. He wasted away at home for over a month, and I think he would have wanted to be "let go" too if possible.

I'm not saying she wanted to let him go when he got the diagnosis, but when he was all skin and bones in bed at the very end and suffering.

Thanks to all
It was hard knowing if it was the "right" time especially when I saw him and he was wagging his tali which he had not done in months but the cancer had spread far enough that the quality of life was gone. I laid on the floor with him while they gave him the shots and was holding him when he dies. It was the least I could do for him. I have not hiked without him in the last 8 years so this will be a challenge.

Hey "MarkOTheBeast" you are right he was loyal as could be until some pretty little poodle walked by and the ne was like "Master who?"
