“Yeah, Burts Bee is the stuff I used. Gawd aweful greasy! I remember seeing a comparison in Backpacker and the Amway stuff was best. Of course ya have to wear the cultish blazer when ya put the bug dope on.”

Citronella is the trendiest product currently used to repel mosquitoes. According to Health Canada, citronella oil repellents registered in Canada protect people against mosquito bites for less than one hour. Citronella should not be used on children under two years of age. Products containing citronella, such as candles, are only effective at repelling mosquitoes at very close range and when wind is minimal.

“Thanks... well, the kind I bought was in stick form. I will try it out around our house (we have gazillions of mosquitos usually-- not so much this year, due to the dryness...) and let you know what happens...

“Best bet, wear clothing that covers the skin. I have used 100% deet and all it does is mess up the sleeping bag and get all over everything. Deet does not help against black flies and is limited against mosquitis.”

It doesn't do much to your skin. Nor does it get absorbed much. That's how it got approved by the FDA.

“Nothing works on deer flies as well. I get the same number of bites from them regardless of what repellant I use.”

“Anybody try Avon Skin So Soft? I have found it to be the only thing to keep away gants and horseflies. It is also effective aginst mosquitoes. I also like to mix it with sunscreen. I mix 1 part SSS with 3 parts sunscreen. It is a little greasy but I find it works. I have had plastic equipment distroyed by DEET. Deet also burns tender areas like the lips.”
