WLD - Tyndall is a great side hike option on this trip for those who are interested. I would suggest it on Day 2 on the way to Wright's Lake Basin.

I just posted a trip page and created a new thread: "Sierra Rendezvous 2005". I suggest we continue our discussion on the new thread!

We did Tyndall from Shepherd Pass this summer. We took the North Rib (mostly class 2 and a little class 3) - a great excursion.

Good information can be found at Summitpost.org

I'm keeping my eye on this trip and the High Sierra Trail trip. I'll make one of these trips, I just haven't decided which one yet.

Matt - Glad to see you are looking at another Sierra trip!

For the benefit of everyone, I put together a comparison:

There are two complimentary hikes going on:

High Sierra Trail (Lodgepole to Whitney Portal) - 7 days, 73 miles, average distance: 10.4 miles/day. This is a trans-Sierra hike that requires a major shuttle around the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Unbelievable scenery along the way that includes Hamilton Lake, Precipice Lake, Big Arroyo, Mt. Whitney, and views of numerous divides. Level of hiking would be generally be considered considered "heavy". Trip planner: geologyguy

Shepherd Pass to Whitney Portal - 6 days, 42.7 miles, average distance = 7.1 miles/day. Minor shuttle required between neighboring trailheads. Wonderful Eastern Sierra scenery and fishing. Includes Mt. Whitney summit. Level of hiking would be "moderate". Possible side hikes include Mt. Tyndall, Wallace Lake, Lake Verstegh, Hitchcock Lakes. Trip Planner: Phil

These two hikes will coincide for at least two nights if everyone stays on schedule!! Great fun.

Pick the one that suits you!!

what trail map would a person need to buy. I see Latta Outdoors offers 2 maps for Mt Whitney area. Which one or is there another that has all of the area we would be hiking in

Ewker - On the trips page I put two links to appropriate maps. One is just the Whitney Zone. The other covers 90% of the hike area.

I intend to look up the USGS map names that apply to our hike. They have more detail than the Harrison Maps and many people prefer to have both types of maps.

Phil, thanks. I will look for that other link about the USGS maps when you post it.

Ewker - On the Trips page there is a description of the hike which includes links to two Tom Harrison Maps.

We can discuss this trip on the "Sierra Rendezvous 2005" thread from either TrailTalk or the Trips page...same thread both places.

Have I thoroughly confused you? If so, it is Matt's fault!

Ewker - On the Trips page, go to the "Shepherd Pass to Whitney Portal Link". In the text are the links and at the bottom the "Sierra Rendezvous 2005" thread also appears.

Since we will be closer out west I will keep an eye on this trip also...

It would be cool meet up with some western TTers.
