“We are going to Roan Mountains tommorrow morning and hiking until tuesday morning... 8 hour drive... I can't find any maps though or trail info so some help would be appreciated... what I was thinking was... drive up Saturday, overnight, go back to truck sunday, drive to Mt Rogers NRA since it's only an hour away and overnight sunday and come back and do some day hikes monday. But I have no idea about the trails or anything... so help me out please... if you got some maps please send em to juztyn at access4less.net and I would really appreciate it... Thanks!” 6:53:52 PM 10/08/04 “oh yeah how is the weather... might be time to the get the 'new' coleman 25* sleeping bag from walmart lol” 7:00:48 PM 10/08/04 “For Roan Mtn. Go thru the town of Roan Mtn. and right thru the state park. At the state park visitor's center you can pick up a map of the area. Try Carver's Gap to Grassy Ridge or to Overmountain shelter then out to Hump Mtn to 19E. Just arrange a shuttle, don't leave your vehicle at 19E! There have been several reports of vandalism at that location. For Mount Rogers, go thru Damascus and stop at Mountain Outfitters for a map and trail suggestions. At least hike from Massie Gap to the AT and see the wild ponies. Then you can hike up to Mount Rogers for a state high point. Hope this helps and I hope you are not a troll. if so I'll get even at Halloween!” 7:23:06 PM 10/08/04 “sweet... are there any good loops for roan mountain?” 7:40:06 PM 10/08/04 Loops “The only loops that I know of in that area are in the state park. Read the Roan Mtn thread from June. I went back in July and it got very cold at Roan High Knob shelter. Lower 40's and 20-25 mile winds. Take plenty of warm gear if you even think you might have to spend the night.” 8:13:07 PM 10/08/04 8:21:42 PM 10/08/04 8:25:45 PM 10/08/04 Roan Mountain “For Roan, I would suggest staying in the cabin at Roan High Knob. Go to the Gardens from Carver's Gap and stay Right at the Gardens. (If you have time check out the gardens by taking the left loop road thru them to get to Roan High Overlook)Go to the end of the parking lot and park near the restrooms. Take the trail there thru the old Cloudlands hotel site and get on the AT. Hike 0.7 miles to Roan High. Return the next day and go to Carver's Gap either by car and park at the gap or by the AT. Go up Round Knob, Engine Gap, Jane's Knob and Grassy Ridge. Return to Carver's Gap the same way but with a different view. The views from this hike are breathtaking!” 8:41:57 PM 10/08/04 hiking roan mtn “Lo hikers, Im a roan resident and wanted to let you know we are glad to have you. One problem we have with some hikers. Seems some hikers dont want to share the trail with hunters. This is not a good idea to hassle us. Some guys here dont just walk away. Be nice and we will too!!!! Have a blast you guys...” 11:36:51 PM 12/23/04 Hey griz... “So, just because you have a gun, its ok to "just not walk away". I don't get that. Cause if the person didn't have a gun, they'd more than likely just walk away...Oh I get it...having a gun gives a person power and priviledge. It allows the gun toter to rule the land. Well, I carry a huge @ssed mutherfoker club, made of mahogony and ebony. I bonk hunters on the head when they are sleeping. Sometimes I creep up behind them and bonk them on the head, just like Maxwell with his silver hammer. Having a big cave man club, makes me big and bad, and I never walk away... sheesh...hail to the mighty hunter gatherers...make room for the lords of Gunpowder. Why the heck don't YOU be nice and pick up your stinkin trash and beer cans that you all tote in and leave behind. Backpackers don't tote in beer, cause we are too busy weighing out everything to make sure our packs are ultra light. so it must be others on horseback or gun toters. Thanks for the WARNING!” 11:45:40 PM 12/23/04 hike? “ramen...... Where did you end up hiking?” 7:34:24 PM 12/24/04 ROAN MOUNTAIN “I'm going soon to Roan Mountain noticed that off the main road to the park loop is the AT any idea where i can get a better map of this area and find out the name of this trail head. Also if there is a shelter and how far. I would like to go for two nights and camp in a different spot each night. Any ideas are welcome please send me an email. Roni_Brittain@hotmail.com” 5:19:13 PM 6/11/06 maps “The only good maps for the Roans are the USGS quads. For Rogers get Trails Illustrated MRNRA map. A few places to camp. Go explore. If you want a real leg breaker hike up from Hughes Gap, 2000' gain in 2.6 miles. Parking on 19-E strogly discouraged. I saw a car burned there once. Its those Buck Mt gremlins” 8:06:45 PM 6/12/06 “I am thinking of going to Roan this weekend, even tho it is the same as the Roan Festival. I will get there by noon on Sat and check out the Gardens and Roan High Bluff. Then either hike to Roan High and stay in the cabin or hike to Grassy Ridge and try out my new tent. Post here if interested. I won't bother with a trip page since it is so close.” 12:32:03 AM 6/15/06 “Ewker and I are going to Roan Sat and Sun if anyone on here is interested. The Festival will be in full swing, but not too many peeps will be at Roan High Shelter. We may spend Sat night at Grassy ridge tho, I want to try out my new tent.” 10:10:56 AM 6/16/06 “DERN!!! I made this thread like 2 years ago” 12:00:40 PM 6/18/06 Trip Report “Ewker and I went up to the Roan Highlands this weekend. I think we had a great trip and the plants were starting to bloom, esp. on Round Bald, Engine Gap, Jane Bald, and up to Grassy Ridge. They were not in full bloom yet at Roan High in the Gardens. Lots of tourists, dayhikers and photographers out at Carver's Gap and the Rescue Sguad and Fire Dept had a food tent at Cloudlands parking lot. We met a couple of groups of thru hikers and spent the night at Roan High Knob at the old fire warden's cabin with Hardcore, the lovely Vadalia, and her boyfriend Walla Walla. We gave them our extra food and sent them on their way north with Good Luck wishes! Maybe Ewker will ride with me again after a close call and a little bad luck with a flat tire. We finally made it safely home to spend the rest of Father's Day with our families. Eddie took all the pics and hopefully will post them soon, BTW thanks again for putting me up Friday night and putting up with me all weekend, LOL, karo” 9:20:25 PM 6/18/06
