“GURLZ, what type of base layer of clothing do you wear in the winter. How many layers and material of the clothing. I have many differant types and would like to hear what others might suggest.” 5:15:49 PM 10/12/04 “GURLZ, don't know what that is but it sounds like it might have cooties. ;-)” 5:20:16 PM 10/12/04 “big heavy cotton sweatshirts will go good with your cotton socks and keep ya warm.” 5:24:28 PM 10/12/04 “Lace underwear and string bikinis are what most of the girls here at TT wear in winter.” 5:32:58 PM 10/12/04 “hmmm, you have a point there dub” 5:37:26 PM 10/12/04 “cottonsocks, I Layer, layer, layer... ask all of them from the last trip. I had 3 jackets alone with me. LOL yeah, so it wasn't that cold, but I didn't know that. I have a patagonia lightweight or mid weight undershirt (cata...blabla..something) fleece vest Jacket (I love this one) If it gets colder I have my mtn hardware jacket to wear over everything last edited: 10/12/04 5:41:42 PM” 5:40:46 PM 10/12/04 “I love my polyester shirts I got from Walmart for $10 (compared to some name brands for $35) as a base layer....I used to wear a vest in Ohio...BUT it is so damp here...my arms get cold....2nd layer....fleece......and if it's REALLY cold.....Down coat.......balaclava...gloves....” 5:46:52 PM 10/12/04 All kidding aside.... “Check out Northern Mountain Supply Killer Deals http://www.northernmountain.com/killer.asp GoLite Women’s Coal $29.00 81% Off! http://www.northernmountain.com/NMSmain.asp?Option=Detail&ID=WGOLITE+Coal%2C+02&Dept=CW&Cat=CW4SubCat=CW41&ClearLast=Yes I have the male version of this and it is very warm. I bought the male versions for myself on two of those items. I use the Coal Parka on every trip I think the temps will drop below freezeing. That one pound wonder DOES keep me warm to 32 degrees.” 6:22:22 PM 10/12/04 “How's the venting Stovie?” 11:23:31 PM 10/12/04 “Glad to hear ya got a "male version" Stovey, I was worried 'bout ya, ya know? ;-)” 11:47:42 PM 10/12/04 “Well...if its really cold I have my polypropaline (SP?) long undies on but usually not while hiking...than I have a fleece breathable base lyaer that fits sng right against the skin...ummmso soft :) My regular hiking shirt, regular nylon pants and wind/water proof pants, a fleece jacket and if its windy a windbreaker. If its rainy my marmot precip. I wear a hat in cold weather and fleece gloves.” 12:28:08 AM 10/13/04 “Venting? Tne vest is kinda selfventing. ;-) The Coal is an insulated coat, unzip the front for venting.” 8:13:04 AM 10/13/04 “I used my coal with my 100wt fleece pullover and was warm at 25 degrees on night. Great jacket. 16oz w/o the hood. I use my Mountain Hardwear Phantom down jacket a bit more now.. because it's 1.5oz lighter and packs down much smaller. Oh.. and I'm cold natured too... sorta likea girl. last edited: 10/13/04 8:40:33 AM” 8:39:41 AM 10/13/04 “hey, I just bought an "el cheapo" fleece for $13 at a store called "Rainbow" (kind of like those teenie-bopper cheap fashion stores.) It's a polyester fleece hoodie and zips up and very light... :-) Do you think that would be good to wear as a layer?” 8:40:22 AM 10/13/04 “Not good enough then. What do I expect for 15 ounces right? I don't know, maybe a back vent or some velcro chest vents or something. I don't think I could snowshoe/ cross country ski in that coat. I'd sweat to death.” 12:14:55 PM 10/13/04 “You definitly wouldn't want to do aerobic activities in the Coal. It's great for sedentary type stuff though...” 12:22:34 PM 10/13/04 “Well, at the last two FYAO's I hiked in with ltwt poly briefs and long Johns and a poly turtleneck under my climbing bibs and G-Tex parka. I put on 200 wt fleece trousers (full side vecro and my salopette has full side zips) and a 200 wt pullover that I also wore to sleep. When it got really cold I replaced the pullover with a down vest under a down sweater under the G-Tex. There is a huge number of possible variations with this gear. Hand layers were poly liner gloves under 300 wt, double backed fleece mitts under G-Tex overmitts. Feet were in poly sock liners under MEC (the Canadian REI) U-40° wool socks in Scarpa Vega plastic boots with the 4 mm liners. So far I haven't needed VBL's on my feet or hands. I hike with a fleece headband and also have a 200 wt fleece balaclava. None of my fleece is Windstopper because the Windstopper layer prevents breathing under the G-Tex. I hope this helps. Doug” 1:12:39 PM 10/13/04 “Lots of vodka!” 1:35:14 PM 10/13/04 “Yeah, drop that core temp down so you feel warmer and don't feel the hypothermia coming on! I had a huge argument about alcohol and body temp with an ex room mate years ago. She was an idiot.” 1:37:59 PM 10/13/04 “Yes, but by dilating the arteries and sending warmth from the core to the extremities, alcohol prevents frost bite. It's a fine line... a fine line.” 1:44:29 PM 10/13/04
