Trekker, I think you'll be going in before us. We have to move the cars around for the shuttle before we can hit the trail.

Yeah, a wakie takie would help.

Hey Navi,
We're on the same permit bro! I haven't read all the posts so I'm not sure if you've applied for permit or not. If you want me to that's fine. If you're going to do it I can send you the money now or give it to you at the trailhead.
>
I think Phil wants us to go in as a scout party to get everything ready for the init....ah...err...I mean Wright's Basin gathering of the "TT bear clan". Email me because I have some great new ideas. They will be very amusing to watch.

Cali and the Sierras are geting hammered right now! AOL says they're getting feet of snow up high. I hope Shepherd's and Forester are open on July 15th. Will crampons be the order of the day?!!! This trip is going to epic. I'm also wondering about buying one of those bug suits that SN wears in early summer.

Nice job Phil. Thanks again for all of the hard work coordinating this.

Wannabp - Glad those photo suggestions worked out for you.
I'm sure we can work something out to hand off the bear canister. The easiest would be if somebody who is starting on the Sunday is planning to arive at the TH before you Saturday folks hit the trail. I'll get back to you on that one... thanks

Phil, I'll look at the spreadsheets at work tomorrow. Navi, good idea to fill out the application immediately. I'll do that tomorrow, too, and be 100% ready to go on the prescribed day.
There was some talk earlier around the time of day to fax the permits -- close to when the office opens so your permit is on top or 12:01 AM so you're first. Which should I do?

Solitary hiker, REI sells bug netting, if you sew.

Trailtrekker, looking forward to meeting you. I'm on the JMT trip you offered to resupply so I can thank you properly in advance. Too bad about cars and bears or I could bring you my stuff. Any ideas?

It's best if you fax it at 12:01 Sunday AM, but you're going to be at Loon Lake.
Would you like to fax it to me so my wife can fax both or do you have other plans?

I seem to have an old permit app... anyone got a ling to the new one?

Phil... got your E and speadsheet info... am thinking I might choose to come in Saturday, since it appears I'd be the only one for Sunday, if I stick with that... would rather hike in with friends, and take my time getting there...

obi, look at my post of 1/8.

There's a bunch of people going in on Sunday. Phil & Phil's, Hodge, Ladyhiker, hikerchic. And that's just what I can come up with off the top of my head.
You're welcome to join us on Saturday, but you'll have company on Sun. too.

Navi, that would be great. I was wondering if Loon Lake was going to overlap faxing. I have look at this stuff at work tomorrow, no Excel and no fax at home. E-mail me your fax number (my profile is current) and I'll fax the completed application to you. If you guys can put it on a credit card or whatever it is you do to pay, I'll give you cash at Loon Lake. Thank you, thank you, thank you........... thank you. Tell your wife, she is doubly appreciated.

Wannabp-
You could bring your stuff as long as it's not very big, you could box it up, write your name on it with the date 7/18 on it and put it in the bear box at Onion Valley- I could bring it home when I leave on either 7/17 or 7/18. Or you could just mail it to me. We'll work out the details by then. No worries. :)

Obi - We have 10 people going in Kearsarge on Sunday. You are the only one of the 10 exiting at Shepherds Pass, thus the separate permit. You would not be alone.

I attached the current permit forms to an email the other day (both .doc and .pdf formats). If you didn't get them, let me know.

Navi,
I've hiked and camped in most of the states in the West and all the states on the southern Atlantic seaboard. The worst of the east coast was on Edisto Island, SC about 2 miles inland from the ocean. That's about 5 feet above sea level on a hammock (local term for low island) in what was basically a tidal swamp.
>
The worse in the West was south of Rocky Mt. National Park. That was at about 7000 Feet. Some of the pictures and descriptions by SN on early summer Sierra trips could easily rival anything we have down here in the South or anything I saw in Colorado. And she was at altitude. What if she had been down on the Kern River? She's small, they carry people off down there!

All's I'm saying is with my spritzer of 30% DEET & 70% water I end up with maybe 3 bites on a week long trip. So, Ain't no Moss-Qui-Toe problem in the Sierra.

I ditto ditto ditto that Phil! Thank you for the great spreadsheet!

Are the people in the Sunday group 1a going into Kearsarge camping somewhere the Saturday night before? If I've missed this in all the posts, my apologies.

Phil, unless I'm reading it wrong, am I going to be on ladyhiker's permit? And does she know that she's putting me and 3 other people on hers? That would be great if you could fax that in ladyhiker since I'll be in Yosemite with navi, wannabp, rockman, jvz & others this weekend.

Ladyhiker, I'll send you a check for the $15. Do you want to email me your address? Thank you so much!

Orrrrrrr if ladyhiker can't do it, can I get on someone else's. I'm leaving tomorrow right after work.

...and did someone say, "Dutch oven"?
Yesterday I updated the Trip page description to reflect the current goings on and to include information about preventing altitude sickness.

I plan to spend the night before we go out (which happens to be my birthday!!) at Onion Valley Campground (9000 ft) to start acclimating to altitude. I reserved two campsites (#11 & #12 with a max of 6 people per site allowed (not sure about any limit on tents or vehicles, but 6 people per site is OK). That is enough space for the Saturday group to camp if they want to.

If you have never hiked at these altitudes before, I highly recommend acclimating sometime before you hit the trail. See the Trip description for more detail about altitude sickness and how to prevent it.

If I have room and time, I may bring my Dutch ovens and prepare dinner and dessert at the campground. I will need a head-count for that if it looks like I can pull it off.

I'm baaaaack! Yes, I have the permit already to fax in on the 17th! Sheila, you can take care of the permit fees when we meet (I can be bought off in wine...). I have a new home phone number since I've moved, but the cell is the same. Anyone who needs my phone number, check the usual places!!! :-)

obi - I remember how much you liked the Dutch oven dinner at Mel's!

The three alternatives we have for Saturday night dinner are:

1. Dutch oven dinner at camp
2. Potluck dinner at camp
3. Drive into town for dinner

Either one works, but the last two years we did the potluck in camp and it was a blast.

Let's see how things work out!

ladyhiker, thank you, thank you! Ok, You like merlo or cab don't you? I've discovered a couple of good wines this last year. I'll bring you a very nice bottle of something for the afterglow party. Now this gets me thinking. What am I going to bring to drink....hum...oh yeah, there's time to think about that isn't there?

After looking over the group of people, this is going to be one gigantic party! Party on Wayne!

Ok, gotta go. I've got trip-report-duty for the Loon Lake Fiasco trip this past weekend....which did turn into a fiasco because too many icy roads plus power out at the lodge so we headed south to Yosemite which was a blast!

Hmmm? ..... That's a great idea hikerchic5. A wine (beer, single malt?) sampler event at the Wheezers and Geezers Reunion? Everyone staying at the Dow Villa Motel on the night of July 23rd could bring a bottle or two of their favorite wine, a six-pack or case of their special homebrew (Navi?) or favorite or unique commercial beer, a special bottle of single malt, etc. We buy cheese and crackers and then pretend to be people of refinement and culture .... instead of the Trail Talk rakes, scoundrels, ne'r-do-wells, kooks, and trailer trash that we really are!
What do you say?
