The Forest Service never anticipated the problems they would create by requiring bear canisters and trailhead permits...if they only knew.”

Never anticipated or never cared? 8^)

Can we just start our trip now? I think we need a pre-trip party! What da ya say?

Then I should wait till the end of the trip to try this stuff? Otherwise someone may have to piggyback me down the trail. LOL (not a bad thought though)

Why do you think I named it Wheezer & Geezer Ale?

As long as it's DOWN the trail we can talk, but I have enough trouble hauling my own ass UP the trail.

who's offering piggyback rides down the trail? I'm in if someone can carry me and my 35 lb pack plus my weight which is...eh um...we won't go there. But really, I'm only about 180 lbs plus my pack! Is that ok?

You musta went snow camping.
Nice pix but looks cold and dreary. Are you sure that was Shepherd's Pass? I'm thinking maybe not becuase I don't think you can see the pass from the valley. If it is Shepherd's then it looks more difficult than I remember.

With that attitude I think you will be my trail wife for sure. I need a good woman to carry me a couple of brews or six for a pass party up on top of Forester.

Sol, yes, I was snow camping.
On the way back I turned off toward Onion Valley. I could see some switchbacks going up the mountain and assumed that was the road. Logically the next opening south would be Shepherd. I've never been to either of the passes so I'm Naviguessing.

But, for sure, THAT'S Mt. Whitney!
And THE sign said it's the Dow Villa!!

How did the snow camping turn out? I gotta do that with you guys one year. Maybe I should come out for a week and do the snow camp thing and then go out into Death Valley for a couple of days. Would that be a good trip?

Back from lunch.....

Sol, snow camping is great. You can take everything with you because you have to go very far and your food doesn't spoil. When it's time to camp you just pick a spot. No rocks, if it's not level, make it flat. No creek? Melt the snow.
Then you can make furniture.

Wind, and I'm proud of it! 8^)

Rock, I only took 1 photo. You're going to have to talk to Hikerchic & songbyrd.
It was a good trip. We made it almost a mile AND a half!

There should be plenty of snow still out there in July this year. The mountains are so much prettier with snow on them.

Ain't that the truth. Even the most humble shack of a home is beautiful with snow in the yard.

WindDing do you think Forester Pass will be doable without crampons in July?

I can't think of one time when the snow on a pass didn't have a trench / path carved in it from all the feet that went before me.
And Forrester is on the John Muir Trail so there will be lots of feet before us.

I'm gonna post photos of the snow camp trip on webshots right now. So give me 30 minutes (I have high speed :P) and you can see our trip. Check on it at 8:30 Pacific time. You easteners will have to either stay up late or wait till morning. LOL

Changing subject now. Did anyone read about that guy going over the edge of Whitney several weeks back?
solitary hiker

Yes, I read about the young man that lost control while glissading along Whitney's Mountaineer's Route - that's the second death on Whitney this winter. On Saturday, I watched a very experienced mountaineer lose control while glissading down the Baldy Bowl in the San Gabriels (Los Angeles area). He hit rocks and fell over 1,000 feet before coming to a stop. They airlifted him out.

You'll get a better idea of snow conditions from people who are out there in early July - too early now to tell what it will be like.
