Gem, we are in the same group I think. All I know is that we climb Mt Whitney the last day before the party

Yeah...that's all I remember too. I did save the spreadsheet, but can't find it.... hate that.

so, you're staying in the hotel on your first night in CA? or are you camping in higher elevation? I did check the hotel last week, and it is in very low elevation, so...not sure if that's the best place to stay if you want to acclimate to the altitude. I rather camp and get used to it for 24 hours.

IHO that's all.

I am staying at the motel Friday night. You should be high enough there that it shouldn't bother you. I found my spreadsheet and we are in group 1W along with trekkngirl
Ewker

6/20/05

the elevation in the hotel is only a little over 5,000ft. that's not enough to get used to altitude.

someone correct me if I am wrong!

Gem,
I'm scheduled to get into ONT at about 11:56 PM Thursday night, July 14th. Don't you get in several hours before me?

Ewker,
I think WLD has reserved a campground spot at the TR on Friday night, July 15th. You'd be better off sleeping there. Elevation is roughly 9000 ft. Of course if you'd rather be alone in your hotel room than at the pre-hike Before Glow Party it will just mean more beer for us but..... hey whatever blows your dress up!

Om,
Even though there are no hot springs on this trip you still have the permission of all the males to bath nude and/or skinny dip in our presence. That goes for all the women on the trip.

And finally Navi,
“Sol, so your "ultralight titanium double-bladed axe with folding handle" doesn't make a sound when it chops? 8^)

That question begs another old philosophical adage.

"If a 4000 year old bristlecone pine in the heart of the Sierra falls to the titanium axe, and there is no ranger around, does it make a sound?"

SH, I have reservations at the hotel but don't you even stop to think I wont be at the campsite Friday night. The Nav,t-girl,war eagle and myself will be at the motel. So maybe we will have all the nav ale to ourselves ;)
Ewker

6/20/05

yeah...I think I get in a couple hours before you...but I need to recheck as they have changed my flight schedule about 2 or 3 times...

and yupp what u said...I rather stay at the campsite and get used to the altitude...just to be on the safe side.

I had no problems the previous weekend, but I also know that this can change with this trip.

I am getting excited, especially now that i had a small taste of what I will see...

And as far as the groups go, just remember this

Saturday Wheezers - leave TR Sat, July 16th and climb out over Whitney, July 23rd.

Saturday Geezers - leave TR Sat, July 16th and leave via Shepherds Pass July 23rd.

Sunday Wheezers - leave TR Sun, July 17th and climb out over Whitney, July 23rd.

Sunday Geezers - leaver TR Sun, July 17th and leave via Shepherds Pass , July 23rd.

Just remember Geezers are old and lazy and always take the "easy" way out.

Wheezers are wheezing because they're going to be sucking down thin air on Whitney.

That's good, waiting an hour and a half is not bad. I just hope Delta arrives on time.

PS: Liked your pictures up to Cottonwood Lakes. I would like a trip up there for nothing other than to spend 3 or 4 days fishing. In one of your pictures you could see the approach (around the corner) to OAP.

Sol my group exits on the 22nd...we're going down to dirty up your motel rooms before you get there.

Sol, FYI, there are no Bristle Cone Pines in the Sierra. They're in the White Mts. across the Owens Valley. 8^)

Gem, don't worry about the altitude. If you're in OK shape and drink lots of water it shouldn't be any problem. If you do start getting a headache stop and wait for me to catch up. I'll give you a drug that should set things right.
Now when you get to the top of Whitney, that's something else. OMG! Is that something else!!! WOW!

Navi Ale (Wheezers & Geezers Ale & McBeer) MMMmmmmmmm
Both have conditioned rather nicely in the bottle. Hope there will be some left for you guys.

Navi
No bristlecones in the sierra? You mean someone got to them before I could?

Speaking of beer, I have a local brew I want you to try. Do you think Delta would let me carry-on a six-pack?
solitary hiker
12:11:54 PM
6/20/05

Well, I was there before you. But I'm too lazy to chop anything down. Must have been someone else.

The beer shouldn't be a problem, as long as you don't start popping them open on the flight. 8^)

Which way is your group leaving by?
solitary hiker

6/20/05

I know when I did the Rockies last yr I really didn't have any problems. True I only got up to 12,500. Drinking water is my biggest problem. I never drink enough while backpacking. I just forget to drink
Ewker
12:16:34 PM
6/20/05

you can buy liquor in the duty free shops, i am sure they will let you carry on a six pack. lol... unless they want to make $$ selling you their beer. i don't think you'll have any problems though. i brought back left over baccardi.

navi, now that i expirienced it I am not that worried about altitude anymore. whitney...yeah...that still concerns me a little, but I deal with it when I get to that stage.

SH - why would you have to bring some Carolina goat pi$$ when you are coming to the land of great beer (and that isn't even considering the navi-ale)???

We'll have to make sure to keep you away from authority figures.....

How far is it to Vidette Meadows from the trailhead (I am too lazy to look it up).

Dayyum AnnieB!
Carolina goat piss?!!! Carolina goat piss?!!This is almost as bad as you calling me a cracker several years ago!!! Let me inform you young lady that there is more to the world of great beer than California's Anchor Steam, Bigfoot Ale, or Buffalo Bill's swill. Believe it or not other parts of the world, including the Caroline, make some good brew. But of course you will not find out because as I remember you have chickened out on the Afterglow Party and have decided to slink off to wimpy Davis to nurse some cheap Miller Lites.

Navi,
I feel a blind taste test coming on. Everyone needs to bring something they think is good and let us chill them and pour into numbered clear plastic cups.

wannabp,
Geezers are exactly as I stated. The fact that you have chosen to go out over the easy route is not the fault of the other more industrious hikers. Furthermore you have renounced the rights to the "top of our [your] world" and given them up to the rightful heirs. As a Southerner maybe I should plant a Republic of South Carolina flag or even a battle flag of the old Confederacy atop that worthless pile of rubble.

only 25 more days! :)

Todays the first day of summer. Maybe the rain/snow will stop and the snow will melt.

Time to dehydrate those fresh picked fruits. To bad no ripe veggies in the garden yet.

There is a McBeer with your name on it already. And one for Songbyrd too.

Sounds like too much work to me. But I'm open to some judgemental sipping.
And just how are you going to plant a flag on that "pile of rubble" if you're one of the Geezers staying in Wright Basin?

navi
Ssshhhhhh....you're not supposed to let wannabp know I'm a Geezer. (Actually a faux-geezer, way too industrious to be a real Geezer). You're supposed to play the game. And besides maybe I'll just jump ship and become a Wheezer. Didn't HikerChic back out of this trip and wasn't she a Wheezer? If so that's an open slot on the Wheezer list.
