Jene, my original plan was to go a couple days early and enter at Baxter but w/ all this snow who knows. I'm doing the HST next week so I'll decide then. I just might become a sleezy geezer :).

Maybe I'll camp at the DV for a week and work on my tan.

Oh yeah. Rat Packer and I have our reservations at Lone Pine in the hotel part. We are definitely going to the party. We'll be hung over, night before we are in Vegas!

songbyrd, it'll be great to hike with you again! Let's pretend smoking another cigar together!

pepperdog, it'll be nice to finally hike with you instead of just drink and have dinner with you in Sac!

rocky, you're in? I didn't know you were ever out. Are you doing Whitney? I don't know who anyone is! Hell, I don't even know who I am! Or what I am! I think I'm a wheezer.....or maybe not.

HC, according to Phils list you are doing Whitney, so you are in fact a wheezer. Or as Rockman would say "a sleezy wheezer".

SH, HC and I do have a room. LOL
:p (at the Dow Villa in fact)

the 7 day food thread reminded me....
I played around with the bear canister, and think my food will fit, but now it's time to REALLY figure it out and pack that darn thing.

how many days of food do we need? how many of those days need to go in the bear can? and what can we leave out of the bear can?

I know you all have posted this somewhere on this thread...but dang....it's a huge thread.

Assuming you're starting Saturday you'll need 7 breakfasts, 8 lunches, 7 Dinners + a breakfast for Saturday morning in the group camp ground.
The first two nights we'll be camping close to bear boxes, so you don't have to get everything into the canister to start.

23 more days!!!

Navi - I guess you mean bear boxes for Saturday night and Sunday night on the trail, but I'm sure they are also available where we camp on the Friday night before.... correct?

I think there are only 4 of us staying at the motel before the hike.

There will be bear boxes or lockers in the camp ground.

•" The Full Buck Moon - July July is normally the month when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, for the reason that thunderstorms are most frequent during this time. Another name for this month's Moon was the Full Hay Moon." This is a quote from the Old Farmers Almanac. Buck won't be along for this event on July 21 but he'll be 'Paloozin in spirit.

Songbryd...That is really horrible about that bear, I feel so bad that happened. I know there are bear fatalities around Tahoe...and I can imagine highway 80 because how fast cars go by. It is really too bad..they do have bear crossing signs up around the lake. I don't know if there are any on 80...wonder if that was a major bear crossing there where the bear was hit. So sorry you had to see that..especially a beautiful Sierra Tahoe bear..it is very sad.

Thanks for posting this...and how was Tahoe for you? I totally forgot about you being up here...so sorry I maybe could have seen you.

Well, Well there\'s always a first time!!
Been lurking this thread for some time. Hi to all who I've hiked with and know. Looking forward to this Summer{?} season. Thinking about inserting some sheetrock screws in boots to act like some kind of "Jerryrigged" crampon. Should be of good use on the earlier HST trip. Ta TA

so who is actually putting the stove and pot in the bear can? anyone? 8 days of food, toiletries [very few], plus stove, pot and spoon......woah... i thougth I would have more room.

I guess I'll really have to re-pack some of my stuff.

I think I might be able to get my stove and pot in the cannister. Not sure about the cup. I will have 9 days of food.

Navi, do you still want to use the Expedition? I won't be back til 7/11, so let me know if you want it/or will be in the area. I can drop it off at Dow Villa (is that where you're staying?) I won't get to Lone Pine til late Fri (7/15).

Gosh, I can never usually fit my stove and pot in the canister for a week long trip! gemini, are you using an expedition or a weekender bearikade or a garcia?

I have the weekender bearikade and I'll think I'll be able to fit all my food for 6 days but I'm not totally sure. I just got it. Snow nymph, I was telling navi that I thought you use a weekender for a week long trip. No?

ladyhiker, are you flying into southern Calif or into Reno like hodge? And if going to Reno, are you going to stay at my place? I'm driving hodge to my place Sunday so you are more than welcome to stay there too & hitch a ride with me. I'll let you bring your laundry basket!

I'm using the Expedition for the 9 day trip. I have both canisters, and use the Weekender for weekends. We do 1-2 long trips every year, so we use the Expedition for that.

For the Rendezvous, I will use the Weekender (and maybe get Calhiker to carry it). Navi can borrow the Expedition. And I think he was loaning his Garcia out to someone (?)

You'll have bear boxes at Kearsage Lakes, so if your first night campground you could store food that doesn't fit into the canister in the bear box.

Are you all packing food already? I plan to TRY to get my pot/stove/fuel into my cannister but doubt it will all fit untill a few days into the trip. I bought those flat dishes that fold and snap together. No waisted space for that.
Is anyone bringing cramptons? Looks as though the snow is melting pretty fast.
Time to start hitting the gym frequently now. I've been so busy with household stuff and all that I have put off the gym. Bad Girl!
JVZ, Am I still riding w/ you? :)

Already packing food?
Before I leave Friday for the HST, I have to pack the food for the HST, my resupply food for the JMT for Vermillion Valley, Muir Ranch, and Trailtrekker. Basically, I have to pack 4 sets of food. I'm going quietly crazy!!!

I'm not sure I get the whole 'pots and cups in the canister' thing...... bear's not likely going to eat them, and putting them in the can doesn't change the smell any... does it?

Help me out here
