Gaspe' was awesome.......and 1500 miles from home(bonus).” 8:13:59 AM 10/14/04 “Deer meat, yum. My mama knows how to cook it!” 8:24:15 AM 10/14/04 “I wasn't trying to start a bunch of anti hunting posts....I was just pulling Arty's leg...cause I've seen a whole lot of points out there in the last 30 days :) You'll see a lot more deer if you are carrying a camera instaed of a gun ;) I have no problem with responsible hunters who eat the meat they kill. There is however a whole 'nother breed of idiots out there too, mixing alcohol and high powered rifles and all their macho BS...they are a little bit scary. More than once I've come down the trail to find myself staring down a rifle barrel with some goof ball with buck fever at the other end. Hunting and trapping is part of my past, I don't really care for wild meats...so I hunt with the camera now and find it even more satisfying.” 8:38:54 AM 10/14/04 “Unfortunately it only takes a few #&%!$s to make the whole group smell bad.” 8:43:52 AM 10/14/04 “Do ya boil those bunnies live, bunny?” 8:44:03 AM 10/14/04 “"we boil 'em alive and we love it!" I have a t shirt from a distant relative's lobster pound with that on the back... This past weekend I found myself wishing I'd hit a partridge (killing it instantly of course) - they are so yummy. is that wrong? :|” 8:48:50 AM 10/14/04 “The Partridge Family?? You have my permission to gun down the lot of them.” 8:53:21 AM 10/14/04 “This past weekend I found myself wishing I'd hit a partridge (killing it instantly of course) - they are so yummy. is that wrong? :|” bunny boiler 9:48:50 AM 10/14/04 ignore this user You should have gone camping with me this weekend. I had a partridge walk out in front of my car as well as about 2 dozen turkeys.” 8:54:27 AM 10/14/04 “I saw a bunch of partridge while hiking, and many turkeys while driving, but none of them walked out in front of my car. I'd never hit one on purpose, but accidentally...well then, I couldn't let them go to waste!” 9:01:03 AM 10/14/04 “bunny boiler eats ROAD KILL ?!?!?!?!?!” 9:44:36 AM 10/14/04 “If I kill it, I do...so far only one partridge...though a friend hit one once and we made stew, it was yummy! (PS - we don't have real partridge here in Maine, they are ruffed grouse...not to be mistaken with spruce grouse, which tastes like...spruce...LOL) I saw a bunch of dead moose this past weekend...wish I knew someone who got one...” 11:04:11 AM 10/14/04 “Hey Artex, Have fun, and stay warm! I get the BBing itch pretty much all the time when it begins to cool a bit. I love BBing in the fall and winter. And it is always deer season by the time I arrange a good week long trip. I used to be pretty uneasy about this, I would wear a bright orange toque and a vest as well, one year I even spray painted the top of my pack. I always feel bad, but I wear 3 bear bells when BBing in hunting season. I am not trying to scare away the animals, I am just trying to make my presence known to people with guns in the woods. When I was 10 my cousin was shot in the head, 5 feet away from me by a hunter, so I know the horrors. But then I never even tasted beef until we moved to the city, because my father was a hunter, so I know the rewards. The hunting tips by manuka were great, I would just like to add one more, Do Not Consume Alcohol While Hunting. Also be prepared to gut your kill, and there are some other traditions to look up with getting your first kill as well. Ask your buddies before you go, smile” 11:34:21 AM 10/14/04 “If you shoot and miss, you lose your shirttail.” 11:38:33 AM 10/14/04 “"and we'll be in tree stands with rifles" Artex. Realize that statistically 1 person in 3 will fall from a tree stand. Make that a really short fall, wear a harness. Use the harness while climbing and make sure it is snug before stepping into the stand. You can ease it up for free movement AFTER you know the stand will take your weight. Unload the gun. Tie a piece of cord onto the gun and climb the tree with the other end of the cord. Pull the gun up when you are comfortable in the stand. CHECK the barrel for blockages before loading. Very hard to get down from a tree after you have blown a hand off with a pipe bomb.” 11:55:45 AM 10/14/04 “why am i thinking of fire marshall bill ?” 11:58:20 AM 10/14/04 “Fire Marshall Bill........ha ha !!” 12:17:34 PM 10/14/04 “Thanks angii, manuka, et al... I agree about the idiots, Wind Walker. Like Lumberzac said, it's a classic case of an idiotic few ruining it for the rest.” 3:01:31 PM 10/14/04 “Artex, I am heading out for the annual hunt shortly (5 weeks from now). I still need to get to the range and make sure everything is good to go. I am really hoping to get 2 this year (I could care less about antlers, they make thin soup). Sass is quittin work soon so the freezer being full is anice bonus when its time to shop. I hunt my families farm so we mix the hunt with a mini-reunion. I love it, been going since I was 6. What are you hunting with, shotgun or rifle? There is NO alcohol where I hunt, PERIOD. We sit down the first morning (eating fried eggs, venison and potatoes) and review an ariel map of the property and discuss who is where, we also try to stay updated on where the neighboring land owners will be. Never had an accident or near miss since...well since forever.” 3:08:07 PM 10/14/04 “It's interesting to read the different points of view across the country. Good to see that drunken, good ole boys aren't limited to Alabama.” 3:24:44 PM 10/14/04 “would actually like to see drunken good ole boys relegated to stories of the distant past. Stories that begin "once upon a time" and only told on Halloween.” 3:28:25 PM 10/14/04 “I've never met a hunter who drank while hunting. Every one I know takes hunting seriously. It's important to get out target shooting, as it's the hunter's responsibility to make a clean kill.” 3:28:53 PM 10/14/04 “well said manuka.” 3:31:46 PM 10/14/04 “Birch, we'll be using rifles (or at least I will be). Not sure what kind though. My co-worker told me what caliber, but I forgot. We will be target shooting beforehand so I can get a feel for the rifle. I have shot numerous times before, but just don't do it much. With boar hunting, I was usually on the horse team (arrives first, tackles and holds boar, no gun needed for that role). No alcohol before or during the hunt for me either. My friend is the same way, and takes hunting seriously. He really knows his stuff and I'm fortunate that I'm going with him. I aim to learn the ropes as much as possible.” 4:10:13 PM 10/14/04 “Sounds like a great time artex. I wish you success and saftey!” 4:13:33 PM 10/14/04 “Thanks birch!” 4:18:05 PM 10/14/04 “stanlee, I know what you mean about licensing fees etc. My hubby buys bait for fishing, and licenses every year, and it would be much cheaper to just buy the fish. My husband also equates deer hunting with sitting in the cold for hours. Maybe that's why he doesn't hunt, lol?????” 6:23:34 PM 10/14/04 “I have always respected everyone's right to believe and do as they please with there lifes..thats everyone's right to do so. I also believe that everyone should be able to say or write there opinion on things if they want. And I know not everyone is going to agree with it, but thats okay. I personally do not agree with deer hunting or any hunting, but thats me, and it's my right, just like it is your right to hunt. Please understand that I have always defended animals that live in the wild...if I see an opportunity where I could maybe help a wild animal..I try to do so, it is just my nature and I can't help it. One of those opportunities came when I saw the beautiful pictures that Wind Walker posted..I thought oh good these pictures may help the deer. Believe me I know all about deer hunting..my brother hunts deer and elk each year, my husbands father use to all his life, and one of his brother and nephew hunts. They know how I feel about it, they do not agree, but they do respect my opinion Artex, I do not know if you were referring to just me or anyone who is against hunting...but if you were referring just to me..to let you know I am very well aware of the veal industry, and I do not eat veal, I am also aware of the other meat industry and I do not give my money to those companies. Writing this tonight is coming from the heart, it is just how I feel, and I do hope you all can respect and understand it Thanks for listening Anita” 10:07:31 PM 10/14/04 “I hate to post this to people that are sensitive to animal issues, but I heard that some calves used for veal are actually suspended in air, so that they don't use their muscles and remain tender. When I heard that and not letting the animal move, I can't order veal or buy it. There are different levels to what is acceptable, like how is an animal killed, and if it's done in a humane way or if they lived a reasonably comfortable life. KFC just got into trouble for PETA filming their chickens being abused. Even my husband didn't want to buy food from them after seeing the film and he always bought their chicken. There is no reason for abusing animals that are intended to be used for food.” 10:34:12 PM 10/14/04 “Wild and alive deer sound great til 2 run out in front of you on a rural highway at night and hit your car twice in three months. then you will agree Illinois or any where has to many deer. Interesting side note the deer population of Cook county IL (chicago area) is over 20,000” 12:28:16 AM 10/15/04 “My dead stepfather-in-law would never ride his motorcycle at night in PA in the country where he lived, so that he didn't hit a deer. I did meet a fellow female motorycle rider, and she hit a deer and got real messed up. Now she's filled with nuts and bolts and plates. I don't think you really need a lot of deer, just one to get in your way, but I would suppose you have a greater chance of colliding with one if there are hundreds of them where you ride. Someone started a thread, who do you fear? I guess for me it would be what do I fear and that would be hitting a deer while I'm riding my motorcycle. I hate riding where there are deer, even during the day.” 12:36:34 AM 10/15/04 “motorcycle's and deer do not mix well at all I live in rural Illinois and they are everywhere during harvest season. and the farmers hate them to because they can tear up a corn field pretty good. Illinois only has 2 shotgun times each 3 or 4 days long and a 2 1/2 month bow season. I know the population is carefully controlled i just wish it was a little smaller. maybe next year i will have time again to do my part” 12:45:33 AM 10/15/04 Hey Lips... “...I had heard that calves used for veal is placed in a really small and dark box. They are standing, but they can't move at all, and it's dark, so they don't have the urge to try to get out....so their flesh is very tender when cooked.” 2:08:07 AM 10/15/04 “Archery season in PA opened a couple of weeks ago. Tomorrow, early muzzleloader season opens, along with much of small game. I'll be out with the smoke stick. Haven't seen anything while out with the bow yet. Be careful if you're out hiking and please wear some orange for safety !” 7:31:03 AM 10/15/04 Bulldozers... “...have killed more animals than hunters could ever imagine to!!! That fancy new strip mall where the Starbucks is going in, well guess what, animals used to live there before it was paved over. That awesome housing developement just down the road with the 10,000 sqr-ft houses, it's built right on the on the old Johnson farmstead. Lots of animals used to live there. Deer, mice, raccoons, owls, frogs, snakes, and even skunks called that THEIR home first. 'Course those varmints are no longer welcome, they just might leave a crap in the yard or eat a very expensive, imported, Himilayan red tipped flowering spikey bush hedged. My how nice those manicured lawns look with all the pesticides poured over them. The homeowners association has also banned all animals from the neighborhood, too, except for minature PooKanese Schnerriers (properly leashed and groomed of course.) The next time you're at the mall slurping a double mochachino latte-spresso, glance around and look at all the places that deer can never, ever again live. Tomorrow morning my recurve bow and I will be relaxing 10 feet off the ground long before the sun rises, waiting for that wonderous time when the woods wake up. If I'm lucky, I'll see a deer and get all excited. If I'm damned lucky it come close, and my heart will beat so loudly that I'm sure the deer can hear it. Perhaps I'll be extremely fortunate and I'll get to hear the feathered fletch of my arrows whistling in flight, and I get to play a very small part in the circle of life. However than rarely happens, and it's not the sole reason I hunt anyhow. Hopefully I'll be able to continue for many more seasons before this farm, too, is "liberated from nothingness" and "improved." Lord knows we just don't have enough pavement. Ordin” 7:56:39 PM 10/15/04 “Mike and I are thinking of getting new guns and going hunting. Nothing like pulling out a steaming stinky pile of guts :D” 7:59:53 PM 10/15/04 “I am wondering what kind of gun a gurl should get. You know, nothing that will knock my to the ground lol” 9:33:49 PM 10/15/04 “Pellet guns don't have much kick.” 9:39:28 PM 10/15/04 “Ordin - well said.” 9:40:10 PM 10/15/04 “Well put Ordin, I spoke with my dad the other day and he told me that my unlce is debating selling part of his farm to developers "just down to the river" as he put it. That would be the end of the farm. My aunt was literally born in the house they own (though it used to be dirt floored). Its been in the family over 70 years, what a shame it'd be if they sold.” 7:40:30 AM 10/16/04 “stanlee, okay, now I know what my nightmare is going to be about tonight!!!! I think we should know how our food is treated before we eat it.” 3:35:28 PM 10/16/04 “Hey Lips...don't open your eyes during your sleep....it's going to be dark too...moo ha ha.” 12:16:44 AM 10/17/04 I used to hunt...... “About 15 years ago, I got home from work just before dawn. I wasn't tired, so I decided to go hunting on my own property. Climbed up the hill (35 acres) & sat down against an oak tree. Had a herd of about 30 moving about & watching the sun attempt to break over the surrounding hills. I was picking out which one I would take at sunrise. Don't care about antlers. Well some summer city people from a few places down came banging & clanging up the hill from the other side. They spooked the deer herd & they all came running towards me. This crew saw them running & opened up with semi-auto rifles. Sounded like WW3. If I bring 3 shells into the woods with me, it's a lot. I got behind that oak tree as they chased/sprayed the running deer with bullets. I feared for my life. I brought up my .243 with 3-9x scope & almost dropped one of the offenders. They were on my property & I'm amazed that I didn't shoot or club one with my rifle. Walked down the hill, sold all my rifles/shotguns & never hunted again. A few summers ago, (new house) I did have a little trouble with a black bear, so I went out and bought a 12ga pump. Think my new neighbors ate him.” 6:06:57 AM 10/17/04 “That's a sad story catskiker. Fortunately where I hunt it's illegal to shoot does, so the hunters are more careful with what they are shooting at. I got my license and sighted in my rifle yesterday. On the drive over I had a nice 8 pointer almost walk out in front of my car. I'm about ready for opening day next Saturday.” 11:29:49 AM 10/17/04 “I don't get it catskhiker, so a bunch of morons trespassed on you land, drove deer and recklessly shot the deers....how did that made you stop hunting? I doubt they'll stop hunting/trespassing even if you stopped hunting, and sold all your guns.” 3:36:25 AM 10/18/04 “Ever since hunting season opened there has been deer in a patch of land behind my house between the highway and the woods. They hide there every year because it's a small area that cannot be hunted. They do this every hunting season. I think they are smarter than we think.” 6:50:28 AM 10/18/04 “RichB - Yeah, that's common behavior for deer. It always tickles me.” 7:12:34 AM 10/18/04 “Three years ago, I drove down the road from a friend's place where I was hunting and nearly hit three deer that were crossing the road between my house and the neighbour's. Who says deer don't have a sense of humour?” 9:05:51 AM 10/18/04 “I recall waiting for my cousin on opening day a few seasons back. He was running late which is rare...he showed up bragging about he got the first fo the season, with his new truck. Wrecked the front end and sure enough he had the doe in the bed.” 9:13:28 AM 10/18/04 “'Course critters are smart, smarter than us mostly...though I did hear a story about a caribou during one of the attempted reintroductions that made believe that indivudual critters can be dumb - just like us. :) I didn't see hide nor hair of a moose last weekend, cause it was hunting season...and they figure it out pretty quickly. Hunter safety was one of the best classes I ever took - really interesting and informative and fun. last edited: 10/18/04 9:21:38 AM” 9:20:00 AM 10/18/04 “catskhiker: I'm just curious why you didn't have them arrested??” 12:13:26 PM 10/18/04 Jump to Page << prev
