If some of that land was used for crops, deer are likely to be accustomed to eating there. I recently saw 11 deer at Rock Creek SP in Iowa. A lake there provides drinking water and the park adjoins farm land growing corn, soybean, etc. I was only joking about an arrest. With nine hunters, I sure they could find another tag for the second deer. MN used to allow one deer, but the law could have been changed.” 7:50:03 AM 11/12/04 “Took a picture of this buck cruising through my back yard this morning. http://community.webshots.com/photo/180361577/215672594maGwQo” 8:16:48 AM 11/12/04 “A friend of mine gave me some canned venison a couple of weeks ago. I had no particular expectations of flavor, but it was possibly the most delicious and tender meat I have ever eaten.” 8:21:07 AM 11/12/04 “Nice picture must hike. The last buck I saw was an 8 pointer that probably would have gone 170 - 190 pounds dressed. That was the weekend before deer season opened and I almost hit it with my car.” 8:22:52 AM 11/12/04 “2 bucks with 1 bullet. What about 2 bucks with 1 arrow ? now that would be something unusual. A couple of years ago in NJ we had a deer and a hunter with 1 shot. Buckshot killed the deer but 1 pellet flew wide and nailed a hunter as well.” 8:51:49 AM 11/12/04 “A couple of years ago in NJ we had a deer and a hunter with 1 shot. Buckshot killed the deer but 1 pellet flew wide and nailed a hunter as well.” manuka 8:51:49 AM 11/12/04 ignore this user Manuka, that is probably the main reason buckshot was made illegal to hunt with here in NY.” 8:54:38 AM 11/12/04 “LZ, NJ went the other way. Too many condos were getting shot with slugs so they changed the law so that it was illegal to use a bead sight to fire slugs. Any hunter using a slug had to have adjustable rifle sights or a telescopic sight to fire slugs. This only works for semi-automatic or pump guns. So all the people with double guns had to switch to buckshot because unless you have a $5,000 perazzi you do not have a rib to mount the sight. Oh yes, did not solve the problem of houses getting shot because it was a lack of scouting the area that is the problem, not a lack of accuracy. Last years soy field is this years Hovnanian condo development. Should have made hunting from an elevated stand mandatory so everyone shoots into the ground.” 9:13:15 AM 11/12/04 “If Minnesota is like Wisconsin, there a number of ways where a hunter could be eligible for multiple tags, especially if they are in a crop depridation zone or high deer population zone. T-zone hunting has been going on here for a couple weeks, where if you shoot a doe you get a buck tag. Regular gun season opens this weekend, I believe.” 11:20:16 AM 11/12/04 “That buck I took the picture of this morning is in my backyard again. Now he’s lying down staring at the backside of a doe that’s about 20’ away.” 12:23:51 PM 11/12/04 “Bow-chicka-bow-bow... Maybe you should put on some mood music, ya know, help a brutha out?” 12:25:14 PM 11/12/04 “Another buck just came on the scene and the doe is in the middle. This could get kinky” 12:33:09 PM 11/12/04 “More pics, man!” 12:35:36 PM 11/12/04 “I'm getting out the camcorder.” 12:38:59 PM 11/12/04 “Deer porn! Seriously, if the bucks fight over her it should be some good footage.” 12:39:40 PM 11/12/04 “No fight today the new comer has wandered away. He was smaller and wasn’t as well endowed as the other buck. A couple weeks ago I pulled in my driveway around 8:00 pm as got out of the car I heard a lot noise in the woods very close to me. There was so much noise I thought it had to a bear passing by. My headlamp just happen to be sitting on the seat of my car so I turned it on and saw two bucks about 15 yards away with antlers locked pushing each other back and forth. They would separate a little do some snorting and then lock antlers and have at it again. I watched this for about 5 minutes before one of them pulled back and began to run with other in hot pursuit.” 12:44:21 PM 11/12/04 27-POINTER 7:04:57 AM 11/17/04 “Unbelievable, Read the story, this moron fired 6 shots at the deer, 4 complete misses and one into the deers back leg. This is definitly a guy who has no compassion for the animal he hunts or he would not go hunting until he could hit what he was aiming at. I am disgusted with his behavior.” 7:26:46 AM 11/17/04 “192 pounds! what was it a deer or a baby moose??” 7:32:05 AM 11/17/04 “I was gonna post the something similar manuka. Maybe the guy should spend some time at the rifle range before he heads out again. I'd like to see a picture of that rack though!” 7:37:29 AM 11/17/04 “There was a pic on the story, did it not show up for you twiggy? That guy definitely needs to spend more time at the range.” 8:23:41 AM 11/17/04 “I see it now!” 8:53:39 AM 11/17/04 8:57:14 AM 11/17/04 “I just got me a 6-point.” 9:01:30 AM 11/17/04 “Shiver my timbers, radagast. That has me thinking of all sorts of evil adaptations. Closed circuit is the way to go plus remote control for destruction of any evidence.” 9:16:34 AM 11/17/04 “Internet hunting, what's the point? If you're going to do that you might as well just buy a video game.” 12:10:05 PM 11/17/04 Sigh, “I didn't get my buck this year. Oh well.” 2:22:43 PM 11/17/04 “Just got the hunt report for the first few days of Michigan rifle season. My uncle got a 4 pint, his boy jim got a 7 and 2 does were taken too, not bad. I hope they save one for me.” 5:10:59 PM 11/17/04 “I didn't get a deer this year either but I did blow a coyote in half with my portable artillery.” 5:50:28 PM 11/17/04 “Yep, that so called hunter should really practice in the gun range. Very impressive deer though.” 1:37:53 AM 11/18/04 “What's up with this IDIOT in Wisconsin?? Shoots 5 hunters DEAD over a tree stand dispute?? WTF.” 6:52:22 AM 11/22/04 “Well he was sitting in the stand and the players tried to go into the stand after him.” 6:54:34 AM 11/22/04 “Here's my weekend deer hunting report. Got in the tree stand (in my backyard) about an hour or so before daylight. Saw a total of 7. All does. Waiting on Mr Buck. Went back that afternoon. Saw two. All does. Went to basketball game. Talked to friend Mike. Informed me that Carroll County is one of those with liberal rules this year. Can kill up to 3 does a day. Went back Sunday afternoon. Saw 2. All does. Still waiting on Mr. Buck. It's an old habit I guess. Not ready to subscribe to the "deer slaughtering" yet.) Could have easily killed a half dozen in two days. My "backyard" is covered up with deer.” 6:56:01 AM 11/22/04 “* laughs at BBW * It was a weekend for violence. BTW the pacers game, and the Clemson/SC game.. and the hunter incident.. my gosh.” 6:57:33 AM 11/22/04 “My entire deer season I have only seen three does. I have not fired a shot. Thanksgiving has always been lucky for me. I will try again this weekend.” 7:02:04 AM 11/22/04 “My grand total for deer sightings so far this hunting season is 1. It was running away from me so all I saw was its back end. I couldn't tell if it was a doe or a buck. I don't know what's up with the deer this year. I use to see at least 4 every time I went hunting. I wonder if there was a large winter kill last year, or if the coyote population is higher than it has been over the past few years.” 7:02:12 AM 11/22/04 “come on over -- I'll let ya hunt on me.” 7:12:53 AM 11/22/04 “I got 400 acres of farmland behind me. The place where I built my stand is a nice draw.. they basically HAVE to come thru there. They bed down there, pass thru there.. and slip into the hollow when the pressure is high in the field. A really really nice place.” 7:18:40 AM 11/22/04 “Yeah, I normally don't comment on news stories, but this one was really freaky. I've ran into hunters while backpacking and it's a weird feeling...I'm standing there with an extra 30lbs on my back and they have a gun. Not a good situation. A couple of squirrel hunters on the AT really freaked me out...when I ran into them they were standing on the AT and looked at me with a finger to their lips...like they were "shushing" me. LMAO!! I stood still until they gave me the wave by!! LOL So much violence for no reason, this story today is really nuts.” 7:19:37 AM 11/22/04 I don't get it. “5 people dead; 3 wounded. So there were 8 people crowded around this tree stand, yelling at this guy .. . and he was able to take out 5 of them? And wound 3???? what the hell was he hunting with .. .a .50 cal machine gun???????? That is some awesome shooting.” 9:59:48 AM 11/22/04 “And they were armed too, right? Something is fishy about this.” 10:02:02 AM 11/22/04 “In the South the temps have continued to keep me out of the woods. Climbing into a stand wearing a pair of short and a t-shirt is just not right. if the coyote population is higher than it has been over the past few years.” lumberzac Yeah around here, more and more deer hunters are going out of their way to take coyotes home as trophies than deer.” 10:11:48 AM 11/22/04 “From the Star Tribune today. They have multiple stories on their websites about it. I wonder if this guy is a Hmong? I have hiked among them a few times..... BIRCHWOOD, WIS. -- At least five people were killed and three wounded in a multiple shooting in northwestern Wisconsin Sunday afternoon. After a confrontation over the use of a deer stand, a 36-year-old St. Paul man apparently chased some of the victims through a heavily wooded area, authorities said. Chai Soua Vang, 36, was arrested early Sunday evening in Sawyer County, Wis., said Sawyer County Sheriff's Deputy Jake Hodgkinson. Vang lives on St. Paul's East Side, police spokesman Paul Schnell said. Vang was being held in the Sawyer County Jail in Hayward. Tim Zeigle, chief deputy for the Sawyer County Sheriff's Department, said Sunday night that four men and one woman were among the dead. Zeigle said the bodies were found "a long way from each other," indicating the killer chased them down after the initial confrontation and as several hunters came to assist their colleagues. Shooting suspect Kstp-tv Investigators found two bodies next to each other, with a third 50 yards away, the fourth 75 yards from the third and the final body 100 yards from the fourth, Zeigle said. They were killed with an SKS assault-style rifle, he added. "He was picking them off," Zeigle said, adding that some were shot more than once. "He was chasing after them and killing them." Authorities were still working on the crime scene late Sunday night. Two of the victims were identified by friends Sunday as Robert Crotteau, about 41, and his son, Joey, about 20. 'A good family' "This is not supposed to happen to people you know," said Mark Miller, owner of Fat Man's, a Rice Lake tavern where Robert Crotteau often stopped by for lunch. Miller also believed two others who were killed were a father and daughter. Crotteau owned a concrete company in town, said longtime Rice Lake City Council Member Marv Thompson said. "They're a good family," Thompson said. "They're decent people. Deer hunting is real big in their family and a lot of households around here." Zeigle said that a man dressed in hunting clothes was occupying a tree stand on private property around noon Sunday. He did not have permission to hunt on the land and was asked by a group of deer hunters to leave. After one man was shot, he used a walkie-talkie to contact others in his party nearby that he needed help. When members of his party came out, they also were shot, Zeigle said. Roads near the scene were closed to all traffic, including ambulances, as authorities from sheriff's departments in Sawyer, Rusk and Barron counties were involved in the manhunt. According to broadcast reports, the man then fled into the woods and came upon another hunter who was able to tell him how to get out. When he got out, he was met by a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officer who contacted police. Officers arrested Vang without incident. His rifle was empty. Zeigle said authorities were notified of the shootings shortly after noon, when a member of the hunting party stopped at a gas station in the Birchwood while taking one of the victims to the hospital. The caller said simply, "There were five people dead in the woods," Zeigle said. Deputies were immediately dispatched to the scene and found the bodies in the brush. The injured were taken to hospitals. At that point, authorities started their search for Vang, taking to county roads and the air hoping to find him. One of the hunters had given authorities Vang's "tag number," which identifies deer hunters when they get their licenses. The hunter had written the number down during the confrontation that sparked the shooting. 'Prayed for safe hunt' Three wounded men were taken to Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake, Wis. One of the victims, Denny Drew, had surgery and was in serious condition, said Jennifer Greshowak, the hospital's director of community relations. Another, Lauren Hesebeck, also had surgery, and he was in fair condition. A third victim was flown to a trauma center in Marshfield, Wis., and was listed in critical condition. Hesenbeck's wife, Theresa Hesenbeck, who also is Drew's sister, said Sunday night that she learned about the shootings shortly after leaving church, where she had "prayed for a safe hunt." Drew was shot in the stomach. The bullet went in one side and out the other, family members said. They added that Lauren Hesenbeck was shot in the arm and the bullet exited through his back. The shootings happened in Meteor Township in southwestern Sawyer County, between the cities of Birchwood and Exeland. The Drew and Hesebeck family said in a statement Sunday that they "certainly appreciate the thoughts and prayer of this close-knit community and encourage you to think and pray for the other families involved." Wisconsin's statewide deer gun hunting season started Saturday and lasts for nine days. Miller said he used to play fast-pitch softball with Robert Crotteau and his brothers. Miller said he brought a car this spring from Denny Drew, "and Lauren Hesenbeck rode with me to put gas in it. It's a small town and everybody knows everybody. "It's going to be strange working [today]. It's all that people will be talking about." The arrested man, Vang, lives in an aging, two-story house on St. Paul's lower East Side. He and his family apparently moved into the neighborhood earlier this year, said John Black, a lifelong resident of the neighborhood who lives across the street. Black and his wife, Cheryl, said Sunday night that the family pretty much kept to themselves, rarely interacting with neighbors. They said they never spoke with the man, but described him as "real clean-cut" and "nicely dressed." 'We're floored' John Black said he believed there were several children living in the home, but added that he didn't know how many there were or what their relation to Vang might be. "We never had any problems with them," Black, 56, said. "We never heard a peep out of those guys, to be honest with you. We're floored. What would take a guy to that point?" John Black said he was watching a football game sometime after 3:30 p.m. Sunday when he noticed some commotion outside and saw several unmarked police cars pull up in front of Vang's house. "They wouldn't tell us anything," said Black, who eventually found out what was going on from a TV cameraman. At one point, Black said, police led a woman from the house, shielding her from cameras by covering her face with a blanket.” 10:21:07 AM 11/22/04 “Also from the "Strib"... info on the rifle: SKS rifle November 22, 2004 HUNTERS1122.SKS The SKS rifle reportedly used in the Wisconsin shootings was invented by Sergei Simonov of the Soviet Union in 1945. • Many variants exist. During the Cold War, Russia shared the design with other Soviet countries and allies, including China. • A standard SKS is semiautomatic and has a fixed 10-round magazine, which is loaded from the top of the rifle manually or with a stripper clip. • The rifle is relatively cheap to produce and is known for its ruggedness and ease of use. • Accessories are widely available. Source: Wikipedia.org” 10:23:01 AM 11/22/04 “From the hospital, courtesy Star Tribune: RICE LAKE, WIS. - Two surviving victims of the weekend rampage in northwestern Wisconsin that killed five people were shot from only a few dozen yards away, the surgeon who treated them said today. Dr. Lynn Koob told reporters at Lakeview Medical Center this morning that Denny Drew and Lauren Hesebeck were shot from about 50 yards away, "obviously" by a high-powered weapon. Koob said the injuries "ranked right up there" with the worst he had seen at the hospital, which occasionally treats gunshot victims. Koob said he concluded the weapons were high powered due to the amount of tissue damage. He said he knew the victims and their families, but "emotions take a back seat when you're in the operating room. After we're done with the surgery, the emotions kind of catch up to you sometimes." Shooting suspect Kstp-tv Drew remained in critical condition this morning, Koob said. Doctors were weaning him off medications to support his blood pressure and his vital organs were working well today. "It seems like he is stabilizing," Koob said. "He's actually doing a little better than last night." Koob described how Drew had been shot by a bullet that tore through his abdominal cavity and organs before exiting the other side of his body. Hesebeck, the other surviving victim at Lakeview, was listed in stable condition today after being shot in the shoulder and arm. His wounds did "not involve any vital structures," Koob said. Map of shootings A third man, Terry Willers, was being treated at Marshfield Clinic for a bunshot wound to his neck and shoulder. Willers had some "bony injuries," Koob said, but reported that the staff in Marshfield said he was "doing fine" today. Hospital president and CEO Ned Wolf was generous with praise for the emergency room staff today. "Our folks did an admirable job," Wolf said. He noted that the hospital had procedures in place to deal with massive trauma, and to transport patients such as Willers to other facilities. The hospital was put into lockdown overnight "to ensure that the families weren't overwhelmed by well-wishers and others who were concerned," Wolf said. Barron County Sheriff Tom Richie said the victims were all "well-known, well-respected members of our community." Authorities planned to release the names of the five people killed in the shootings at a press conference for early this afternoon. A fund has been established for the families of survivors and victims of the shootings. Contributions can be sent to: Rice Lake Hunters Survivors and Victims Fund Dairy State Bank 16 S. Main St. Rice Lake, Wis. 54868” 10:26:07 AM 11/22/04 “The SKS shoots a 7.62x39mm cartridge, and while plenty big enough to kill a man (we are talking a military rifle here), it is not particularly "high powered". The guy was probably using soft-nosed ammunition, which will do more tissue damage, regardless of whether or not it's "high-powered".” 10:29:02 AM 11/22/04 “Jeezuz! My colleague who was reading this wiht me said it's a wonder it doesn't happen more often. I am absolutely horrified. I don't think it was very tasteful to post about the SKS, BUT it was not invented by the Soviets - Simonov adapted the German Heimgewehr 42 from captured German manufactories.” 12:02:11 PM 11/22/04 “It seems to me that people are demonizing the gun instead of the idiot wielding it. Grem, if you (or anyone else) thought my post was in poor taste, I apologize.” 12:05:19 PM 11/22/04 “Ooops! Hg 43. Yes, a the shortened cartridge concept developped by the Germans for an assault rigle (Sturmgewehr 43 [later to become the AK 47]and Home Guard use Heimgewehr 43) are a little light for deer, but designed for people at standard combat ranges. Soft point ammo would make it even deadlier.” 12:05:48 PM 11/22/04 “I used to have a friend.. who used to joke about going human hunting.. but this idiot obviously found sport in it. Oh well. I'm saddened for the families for sure. trailhound57: It's been warm no doubt. Weird sitting in your stand, and it ain't even cold. Fortunately deer still have to eat. Just takes a little more patience to catch them right as they are finding a good place to bed down.” 12:07:05 PM 11/22/04 “As a Wisconsin Northwoods resident, this is closer to Snake Eyes' or Mataharihiker's territory than mine, though I pass through Rice Lake on U.S. 8 on trips to the Twin Cities. There will undoubtedly be a cultural element to the story that emerges from this incident. The Eau Claire area has gone through hunting and fishing situations with the influx of Hmong refugees over limits, seasons, licensing etc., as have other places in our state, such as Wausau and LaCrosse. Which is not yet to say the man is Hmong. As noted in one of the stories, the property-owning group only had one gun amongst them. Hard to defend yourself, though why you'd respond to a shooting situation unarmed is not clear at this point since we don't know what the radio message said. As for the reference to "cities of Birchwood and Exeland," you can be sure that they are more likely "unincorporated" towns. This is a very rural part of Wisconsin. Please do not judge other hunters by this man's actions. If you come on someone in the woods during hunting season and they are armed, do not presume it somehow threatens you. This shooting situation is a horrible abberation that hunters will now have to struggle with in the public view. BTW, always wear blaze orange should you choose to enter the woods during any hunting season, whether you are hunting or not.” 12:10:05 PM 11/22/04 Jump to Page << prev
