Depending on the hunter, I’ve heard that the heart has a high content of lead.

LOL @ zac...

I've heard the liver is high in cadmium, but hadn't heard that about the heart. I know consumption is supposed to be limited...so I slice them up and freeze them in small portions.

Tomorrow I'll eat the liver, heart and gizzard of the turkey. I'm not sure how very bad that is, but it's only once a year.

Great score on the free meat Twiggy!

I head up tonite for three days of hunting. Its been 2 years since I have brought home venison. I hope to change that soon.

Zac,

As I said at the Ithaca car camping trip, caribou is 100% natural without artificial hormones or antibiotics and no heavy metals except for 178 grains of lead and copper.

I hope you get your deer.

I'd like to apologise for this very un-Canuck language.

I'm sorry.

I haven't gotten to sit in the blind and pretend to hunt since Abby was born. I think I'll throw my orange coat in the bag and try and sneak out to watch the morning come alive and look out on what's behind Birch Sunday morning. Good luck everyone!

Birch got himself a doe tonight. Already butchered and in the freezer. He's hoping for another one tomorrow. A nice clean shot, no meat ruined, and she dropped immediately.

POBGYN- The last deer I got was with my Toyota pick up doing 70 on the interstate. I hit her in the front 1/4 which caused her body to swing around and slam the side of the truck thereby rupturing her entire digestive system and spraying my whole truck with shlt and green goo. LOL!

The funniest thing? I was on my way to my deer stand when I hit her and I had dropped my full coverage insurance not three days before.

Mine ruptured too. I got lucky and she somehow managed to go UNDER the car. She only got the radiator and put one tiny dent on the hood. I was very fortunate because we only have minimum coverage on the car. I was keeping an eye on her three pals on the side of the road when she decided to come out of the trees to join them. I never even saw her which probably saved me from having the obligatory heart attack. I always figgered if I nailed one it would come through the windshield. I was really lucky.

My daughter and I went fishing Friday. As we were driving to another spot, we came across three does standing in or next to the road. At least two were nice big white-tail. We got really close in the truck before they finally spooked and ran into the woods. I got pictures. My daughter was really excited.

I went to a new spot this morning. I had deer all around me. Unfortunately I did not have my elevated stand and spooked at least two trying to peak over the ridge on my left.

A gunshot a few moments later turned my blunder into someone else's good fortune.

Friday evening, my wife was driving back from da UP in snow flurries and passed a 10-12 pt. buck standing at the side of the road. The slick pavement had her just hoping he wouldn't decide to cross just then, as hitting the brakes was a dicey option.

Thanksgiving Eve my sister-in-law was driving her Saturn to a family gathering. Enroute a deer ran into the side of her car. Broke driver's side mirror. No other damage. Maybe Saturn will include this incident in their next commercial. Frayed nerves but no injuries to the driver. The deer ran off and didn't look injured.

New ad for Saturn. "We're good for the environment, can't even hurt a deer!" lol

Twig,

Thanks, It was a small doe. Prolly my smallest ever but will be oh so tender.

Limits depend on your location. I hunt on my Aunts farm, I can take as many as I want. Now when it comes to legally taking them, I am limited to how many permits I buy. I can take two bucks and as many permits for antlerless as I can buy till they are out (no more than one per 24 hours). For the past 5 years I could legally take as many antlerless deer as I wanted at $6 per animal. Not bad. My best year was 3 doe (one archery, two rifle).

Finished roof on treehouse. View is incredible. About 18' off ground, 8 x 10 platform -- guard rails, etc.

Could have easily harvested a dozen deer -- have not pulled off the first shot yet. Watching in amazement. Can't seem to run them off, even in the midst of the chainsawing, hammering, and making a lot of noise.

Convinced that the deer are thinking it's a house, people don't arm themselves and hunt. They only do that in the river bottom to my left -- where hoards of folks (LOL) are driving around on four-wheelers and shooting fully automatics.

This is a natural thicket and habitat, and will be disturbed as little as possible. Someday -- my gosh, I'll pick one out and have him for dinner.

Today is the first day of deer season here in PA. It a big event every year and schools close for the first day of the season. It's also the second year of antler restrictions and a 2 week doe season so it will be interesting to see how it's working out. Some old timers say less deer out there and claim the sport will decline more since license sales have dropped in the last few years. I'm not a hunter, but from hiking locally I've seen more deer this year than last year. They also have some fenced in areas in the local forest to keep deer from browsing the new growth and the difference is amazing. They really do eat a lot of the young trees and plants.

RichB, you hear that argument from old timers everywhere. Frequently, when you ask them where they hunt, they say the same place they always hunted -- and that's the problem. The habitat has changed over all those years (in other words, maturing) and the deer have moved to more attactive locations of new browse created by logging, farming and suburban development.

So far 2,262 bears have been killed as of the second day count at state check stations. In some areas the hunt is still going on and the expected final number should be around 2,600, so it's turning out to be a pretty good year. The largest bear so far was taken in Centre county weighing 671 pounds.

Standard "he said", "she said", both sides will claim that the other side shot first.

The argument that the group shot first would be supported by the question "who would choose to start a gunfight against multiple people?", the answer there is no-one.

I do find it curious that the group that owned the property and were there to hunt had only 1 gun among 8 people, suspect that other gun(s) may have been removed before authorities got there.
This is clearly overridden by about 4 people being shot in the back, at least 3 counts of murder even if 1 could be explained (and no evidence to show that) as a shooter moving to cover.

Police should run a GSR test on all of them to find out who fired and who did not.

From what I've read the one who initially confronted the suspect had a rifle, the others were in a cabin and came out when called.

I don't buy the "hidden or removed guns" argument. There's no way that guy isn't on a slab if all or some of the other hunters are armed.

bitpusher - I tend to agree with you, but we really don't have the facts.

In fact, most people, unless they have had military training and/or experience, will run from such a confrontation. It's similar to a bar fight. If someone can put an attacker down easily and the attacker is down and expressing pain, his friends are unlikely to push the issue. Most likely they will back off, not wanting to risk gettin hurt like their friend.

So, perhaps lacking military experience, the others all probably ran as soon as the shooting started and the first person was hit.

My guess is that the case will be moved elsewhere, plea bargaining will take place and the guy will get concurrent sentences of life. With conflicting accounts the true story may never be known.

Trouble for Vang
There was a Wisconsin warrant for Vang for his arrest for trespassing while hunting in 2002 and failing to pay the fine.

Oops! Registration required for the link. They did not ask me to sign-in the first time I went to the story. Now they do!

Snake Eyes
I agree, but the defense team is already putting spin on motive.

Testing all the people for GSR will prove that none of them fired. Otherwise the defense only needs 'reasonable doubt', and will produce a temporary insanity/combat stress defense along the lines ...
"he was fired on, blacked out and relived his village in Laos being overrun by Viet Cong yada yada yada" "but he really is a very nice person"

The response is like a rape case where the victim will have to prove they are innocent, in this case prove that none of the others fired.

They will also try and get his domestic violence priors banned as evidence, do not know on what grounds but they sure will try.

The regular season is over
Well at least the northern zone in NY anyway. What a crappy season. It only got cold enough for the deer to start moving a couple of times. I only saw 3 deer (none that I could identify the sex on) all season form Oct. 23 - Dec. 5. Maybe next year will be better, but with the lack of feed in this fall, it looks like it will be another hard winter for the deer to survive through.

It's my backyard, Paul. I own eight acres, and there is at least 400 back behind me. It's sweet. I'm 20 feet in the air, on a 8 x 10 platform with walls and a tin roof. I'm looking across a deep-walled creek at a natural thicket, corn/beans bordering three sides. They come off the field, and into the thicket for cover. EVERY morning.. yes.. EVERY morning and afternoon -- the least I saw, even when it was pouring down rain was at least 4.. most days 8-10. It's been nearly a deer SANCTUARY. I have yet to fire my first shot -- just loving watching them play out in front of me.
