Most of the boulders were DRAGGED home by me -- that's true. I did break down an buy a couple though. The largest one weighs about 900 pounds. (LOL)..

You'd be welcome anytime Paul. Let me know, and I'll make sure we have dinner ready.

Saw two deer on Saturday at Wheeler State Park. I was going fishing, not hunting though, so I didn't bring any home.

The first was a doe, standing by the side of the road as drove into the park. The second was a buck. I didn't get a really good look at the rack, but judging by the size, I'd say it was at least 6 points, perhaps 8.

Driving to Wheeler Saturday I noticed bloodstain on the highway that looked a deer strike. Made me watch a little closer.

We live about 15 minutes from Joe Wheeler State Park and its unbelievable how many deer are either hit by cars or hit cars in that park. For a while Joe Wheeler had a really nice albino buck that was seen on the golf course often.

Yah I definitely drive the speed limit in the park. That doe was standing right by the side of the road, watching me drive past.

Well, I didn't kill anything, but two of my best buddies did. I ate venison yesterday evening and it was delicious.

My guest shot the buck with my rifle (Savage M99, .308 Win. restocked and with a Redfield Widefield 2¾X on Redfield mounts). He'll be using it on caribou over Christmas.

BTW, I was 'using' my Marlin M366 in .35 Rem.

I'll be putting a Williams receiver sight on it this winter for next year.

I've been using a Savage model 170, 30-30 with a Simons 3 to 9 power scope. Some time when I have the money I’d like to get a different riffle, as the pump tends to rattle around making for unwanted noise. The gun also has a tendency to jamb when ejecting the shells.

TD, that's the Ruger that shoots .44 magnum, right? Do they still make those? I had a buddy who had one, great rifle.

Hmm, doesn't sound like the same gun. The one my friend had was a short lever-action (I think) that fired .44 magnum. Not heavy at all.

If you read, barnjarna (which I already have my doubts).. you will see that I have not been deer hunting -- so far only deer watching.

And if deer hunting was so crewl and awfull?.. Why did Tennessee raise the limit to 3/day this year? I'll tell you why -- cos we are getting over-run with the four-legged disease carriers.

Hey Birch! I tried that shoulder roast recipe. I just don't like molasses. But it was tender and juicy. I think I'll try that recipe again minus the molasses. Meanwhile, I have half a bottle of good red wine to finish. :)

Wardens find 16 dead deer; four arrested "Charges against the four men will probably include hunting deer with the aid of an artificial light and out of season, possession of an untagged deer, hunting turkey during the closed season and with a rifle, and shooting a firearm from a vehicle.

Each count carries a maximum $2,109 fine and three years' revocation of hunting, fishing and trapping privileges. Wardens also seized the individuals' guns and other hunting gear."

We shot three nice ones this weekend. Pictures in my photo album. I say we, because I didn't kill one. We almost got killed by lightning and the wind was only slightly better than the rain the following day.

Congrats. Sounds like you did a lot better than I did this weekend. I didn't even see a single deer let alone one with antlers. Only 4 more weeks left of the season. Hopefully we will get some sustained cold weather soon. That always seems to get the deer moving around.

I saw lots of dear parts this weekend...being fed to lions and tigers, LOL...

funny thing is, the others who were standing next to me with their kids watching a hyena devour a deer shank were the same people who wouldn't go see March of the Penguins cause they'd heard it wasn't appropriate for kids.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - An ancient weapon that struck fear in the hearts of Spanish conquistadors, and that some think was used to slay wooly mammoths in Florida, may soon be added to the arsenal of Pennsylvania's hunters. The state Game Commission is currently drafting proposed regulations to allow hunters to use the atlatl, a small wooden device used to propel a six-foot dart as fast as 80 mph. The commission could vote to legalize its use as early as January.

It's unclear which animals atlatlists may be allowed to hunt, but the proposal is being pushed by people who want to kill deer with a handmade weapon of Stone Age design. The name, usually pronounced AT-lad-ul, is derived from an Aztec word for "throwing board."
[...]
To use an atlatl, throwers hook arrowlike hunting darts into the end of the atlatl, which is generally a wooden piece about 2 feet long. The leverage of the atlatl allows them to throw the 5- to 8-foot darts much farther than they could throw a spear.

I read that article in the paper yesterday and it'll be interesting to see if they allow that weapon to be used.

They also had an article about the future of hunting in PA. and the concern is that for every 100 hunters that stop hunting for whatever reason, only 68 new hunters enter the sport. License fees are main source of money for the Game Commission so they are trying to get more youths involved. A couple of other strategies were mentioned too in an effort to turn things around.

I think probably the most effective weapon for killing deer is an automobile traveling between 40 and 70 MPH.

It's not only hunting numbers that are dropping, but also trapping. My guess is that it's because it probably takes lots of time to set traps and check them each day.

I was surprised to find out the other day that there is still a demand for beaver pelts to make hats. It's not much, but it's there.
bitpusher

There's a market for fur in the form of fishing lures. Squirrel tails are used for hair on the end of hooks. Beaver fur is used as dubbing for making flies. Fur from water animals make a fly float better because they contain natural oils. Although, a fly soaked in Rain-X with a nylon body will float even better despite being made of synthetic material.
