Renig?View Messages“nutz. i was just kidding. this was a fuego thread afterall and there was too much agreeing. i just thought we needed another side. now i feel kinda bad cause pinky's out there on her own. guess i learned my lesson. pinky: sorry! treebeard: you're one sharp cookie!” 9:52:48 AM 10/14/04 “Sacco is usually one for the sarcastic.” 9:56:26 AM 10/14/04 “" many people have taken to thinking that any word sounding even closely related to the "n-word" word is highly offensive..." I agree, this is the reason why I say it's important that we talk about things like this on, in the open and up front. People might not understand where the a word comes from, or what it really means. They just rely on the "info" they have been given through the regular social channels and never bother to look it up. How many times hae you found out that you have been using a word incorrectly? Better question: How many times did you rely on the "urban myth" of the meaning, such as this "renege" word. I do understand that to some, this word might be offensive, yet I counter with the fact that sometimes, we must remove ourselves from the immediate emotional impulse in order to take a look what what's going on. Example: White dude walks up to a group of Blacks hanging out and sez "what's up, my niggas?" Now, what are the chances that white guy is going home in one piece? LOL! But this is what I'm saying is the type of reaction I'm saying that we must avoid. --At this point, I'll put in my disclamer: This/these examples are for explaining the world around us that we all know, or might know, to a certain level. I'm not trying to use any example to show my bias toward a certain group of people. My true intent is to inform and discuss, not start anything.-- Furthur more, once we all get to a point where we don't act on the impulse, we can discuss what's going on with these words, so we can all understand what the meaning is and use them properly. Maybe, just maybe, by "recycling" our language, more "made up", or slang words would decline? Maybe, we would all be able to better communicate among ourselves?” 9:56:38 AM 10/14/04 “hahaha, i was surprised to hear you make your first comment, Sacco! you little kidder, you. i have never, ever, in my whole life, heard of anyone finding the term "renege" racist! bizarre and a half. i mean, it isn't even spelled close to anything racist. what the heck.” 9:58:59 AM 10/14/04 “I'm feeling very gay today. Keep in mind, I'm married to a woman. :-)” 9:59:53 AM 10/14/04 “and all this time I thought you were a guy.” 10:02:07 AM 10/14/04 “OOOOOOOOOOOH! HPM said "Homo"!!!!!!!!!!! Ban HPM! I brush my teeth with collagiate toothpaste. Heres my pet peeve (try not to take offense): I got into a heated exchange on the other side for my un-PC humor. I found out I was defending myself against a bunch of people from straightlaced vanilla communities, without so much as an "outed" homosexual. Although some did say "My best friend is ________." LOL! DON'T PREACH "CORRECTNESS" TO ME IF THE SIGHT OF A NONWHITE IN YOUR 'HOOD BRINGS OUT THE COMMUNITY SECURITY FORCE! Thank you.” 10:02:37 AM 10/14/04 “Bear, As I said in my previous reply, what I am offended by is not the "correct and common usage" of words which are not racially offensive in an of themselves. The problem is the "implied" meaning given the context of this overall thread....i.e. people are using words that have negative connotations when used as a racial slur. YES, I know the dictionary meaning of the words you have chosen to emphasize. However, my guess is that 99% of the people around us do not know the meaning. Because of that, I don't think you could enter a room full of random people and use those words and have some people not get offended. To the unenlightened ear, your words could be construed as a racial slur. Some words have become archaic in usage and and have basically dropped out of our common language, in other words, they no longer have the same meaning to others in today's society. Just because a word was used hundreds of years (or even decades) ago, does not mean that it holds the same meaning or high esteem in today's society.... The reverse can also be true-- words that formerly had a negative connotation can also take on more acceptable meanings. (Take the word, Jazz, for instance-- years ago, it meant to have sex, the usage has now changed to reflect an acceptable usage about a type of music.) Our language is constantly evolving and changing, we need to adapt to the changes as well. Yes, political correctness can get rather out-of-hand.... and people ought not jump at taking offense at commonly used words which are being used in a commonly accepted context. However, when you are in a discussion about possible racial slurs, those common words can start to take up a different, more offensive meaning. Each of us has "trigger" words that are more offensive to us than others. I think we need to keep that in consideration when posting our messages....” 10:04:23 AM 10/14/04 “"and all this time I thought you were a guy" -Limpy Yeah, I guess my statement was rather androgenous. Pun intended. Oh, and I don't think my wife would like to hear I've suddenly become female. Heck, I wouldn't like to hear it either.” 10:06:49 AM 10/14/04 “BTW-- I thought the word "Renege" was pronounced "REE- NEG".” 10:07:58 AM 10/14/04 “OOOOH! You said "trigger"! I also have never heard that "renege" could be "bad" On the other hand, how many people know "Oriental" is somewhat deregatory when describing a person of Asian descent? Asians are only Oriental if we are Occidental.” 10:11:34 AM 10/14/04 “Laqtis... Actually, your comment about a white guy coming up to a group of African Americans brings to mind a woman I met recently. She is African American and married to someone who is Italian American.... someone who was also African American came up to her and started talking trash about white people. She just stopped them and told them "How dare you make assumptions about me without even knowing anything about me!" Which only goes to show that you can't judge people before getting to know them. This is what is so hard to convey online-- there are no facial expressions and body language or even tone of voice to convey whether or not someone is joking or trying to make a serious point....” 10:15:08 AM 10/14/04 “Oriental is a type of rug. Asian is someone from Asia. Asian American is someone of Asian Heritage who is a U.S. Citizen. Other acceptable terms: Asian Pacific American (or APA) Asian Pacific Islander American.... Examples of "hidden" Asian Americans: Dean Cain Keanu Reeves Tiger Woods” 10:18:23 AM 10/14/04 “Oops...Didn't mean to post that twice! :-P last edited: 10/14/04 10:19:24 AM” 10:18:23 AM 10/14/04 “I told someone I was half Sicilian. She replied: "Wow. They're the Blacks of Italy."” 10:22:17 AM 10/14/04 “seems that certain people are on to me time for a new MO” 10:29:32 AM 10/14/04 “I agree, Pink. I understand that words evolve over time. How about "Do you have a fag to smoke? I'm having a real gay time!" means something completly different 70-80 years ago, yet nowadays, you'd get some looks (both positive and negitive! LOL!). But, like that example, it shows what happens to words when they are no longer used in a the proper way. The word at some point takes on a second or third meaning and before ya know it, it's slang. I'd like to know at what point do "we" turn a common word into slang? Are there any recent examples? Is anyone up for changing one just to see if we can do it? What would be the word?” 10:36:33 AM 10/14/04 “troll is a fine example around here.” 10:37:41 AM 10/14/04 “How about "backpacking" We can do alot with that one. Wink, wink, nod, nod.” 10:40:11 AM 10/14/04 “Any girls here like backpacking? How's about Ms. pin-KY?” 10:41:35 AM 10/14/04 “let's see, recent words which are now "acceptable slang".... call someone PHAT (pretty hot & all that) - pronounced "FAT". You may or may not get slapped. hanging chad has a much different meaning now than 4 years ago... With the internet, language seems to evolving far quicker than before. For instance-- now that people text message a lot (I don't because I don't have a cell phone.) the short-hand letters and numbers are more the norm.... Here's a pretty ironic use of text messaging-- Think & I saw in a store a sign which read "R U ready 4 School?" The English Teachers I had in elementary school would have cringed at such a sight! With the media today, words become slang as people succumb to advertising and media blitzes as to what the newest fad is....” 10:42:54 AM 10/14/04 “nigga, please” 10:54:09 AM 10/14/04 “let's not forget the word sacco not too long ago the word didn't mean too much to too many. but now it means: super cool, handsome, sexy, smart, funny, spectacular, and overall awesome guy. all the inkids are using it now-a-days. last edited: 10/14/04 11:16:11 AM” 11:10:44 AM 10/14/04 “Oh come on "sack o" has been around for ever as in he is a "sack o sh1t"” 11:26:58 AM 10/14/04 “Oops forgot the :-))” 11:27:30 AM 10/14/04 “you forgot "wacko"!” 11:29:53 AM 10/14/04 “obviously some folks are behind in the times. you two are sooo not sacco. last edited: 10/14/04 11:38:16 AM” 11:37:54 AM 10/14/04 “Well what exactly is a "Lyra"? "I plucked her like a Lyra"?” 11:42:23 AM 10/14/04 “How's about Ms. pin-KY?” Limpy 11:41:35 AM I got the Zappa reference, Limpster! lol” 11:43:30 AM 10/14/04 “yeah, that's exactly it, bearmagnet! actually, i got it from a book, it was the main chica's name. and it's a constellation. it's like THE coolest name on here, get w/the program!” 11:45:31 AM 10/14/04 “KY, don't be shy!” 12:09:44 PM 10/14/04 “I was reading a really kewl post on the net a few days ago.. about all the new words.. related to puters. Stuff like.. messenge.. as in a verb. ;)” 12:40:13 PM 10/14/04 “Where's Bill Cosby when ya need him?” 8:01:23 AM 10/15/04
