“http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/news/article/mps/UAN/2821/v/2/sp/ Sorry don't do links but check ut this new MSR Stove,, white gas with no pumping” 8:56:29 PM 10/16/04 “Wow, that looks impressive. Now if it could only get the BoSox a win here in the ALCS.” 8:59:43 PM 10/16/04 “Wow it did a link all by itself!! Now if we could just get a spell check?” 9:07:06 PM 10/16/04 “I wonder how much it'll cost.” 9:11:22 PM 10/16/04 “I e-mailed msr about it I'll let you know if they respond.” 9:12:36 PM 10/16/04 “Cool. That article talked up a good game, so I'm guessing it'll be pricey at the onset (which is not say it wouldn't be worth it).” 9:14:29 PM 10/16/04 “http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/news/article/mps/UAN/2912/v/1/sp/332834698505328239484 Here are some pictures” 9:16:16 PM 10/16/04 “Pretty cool. Looks kinda like a jetboil.” 9:19:10 PM 10/16/04 “Artex, it is a Saturday night you need to get a life up there in Maine.” 9:20:25 PM 10/16/04 “Ha ha ha! I'm not much for going out these days. I was going to do an overnighter.. but a cold rain had been forecasted for tonight (when it's below 50 and raining without snow, I usually bail), and that held true. That and I had to catch up on grading some student's projects, which I did today. A dayhike, possibly up Mt. Washington, is in the works for tomorrow, depending on what the weather's like.” 9:24:30 PM 10/16/04 “I've heard about this. Thes are the first pics I've seen, though. Thanks.” 9:31:45 PM 10/16/04 “The article is a little vague. Is pumping required?” 9:35:34 PM 10/16/04 “Funny how this "radical new technology" achieves the same thing my 33 year old Optimus 99 does. And the 50 year old Svea 123, it does it too! The old ones don't rely on a ceramic element. All you have to do is slightly heat the fuel tank with the palms of your hands and voila! A pressurized fuel system.” 8:28:37 AM 10/17/04 “That article is pretty vague - what's with the little white 'pill' thingy?. MSR will probably charge big $$$ for them if those are needed to get it going without a pump. Like solitaryhiker mentions, it looks like they're trying to copy the 100 year old Optimus/SVEA technology by using the term 'capillary action' to describe what will essentailly be a piece lamp wick between the fuel tank and burner. If I want an easy-to-start, no primimg white gas stove I'll stay with my 25 yr old SVEA 123.” 2:15:10 PM 10/17/04 “Um that little white pill is actually the burner, it acts like a small jet engine. I remember seeing an article about them awhile ago. I don't think it will need to be replaced often. I am thinking that this is going to be around a 10oz stove including the pot. I am hoping that msr responseds to my e-mail on monday.” 2:41:01 PM 10/17/04 “Solitary beat me to it but this really seems to be a repackage of some existing and very basic technology, my optimus and svea already use this new miraclesystem (minus the ceramics). I bet this'll be a pricey setup. A brand new Svea 123 will run you about $60, I suspect a$100 plus price tag.” 3:13:26 PM 10/17/04 “I could be wrong, but I thought I saw over at backpacking.net that the price was around $159. There was a discussion over there about this stove a few weeks ago.” 3:21:00 PM 10/17/04 “MSRP is $170 according to Outside magazine's website. There's a short summary about the new stove over there from "the gear guy".” 3:38:56 PM 10/17/04 “RE the 123...I don't know about pressurizing it holding it in your hands. I used to put a lighter under it to get the pressure built up or put a few drops in the divit under the burner but yeah, old technology. Can you put a lighter under this stove or are you screwed if something happenes to the silly little pills? Does it have a reservoir where you can pour a few drops of white gas to prime it? Too gimmicky for my tastes.” 8:10:17 PM 10/17/04 “I wonder how fouled up the ceramic element would get if one used some old gas by mistake - strikes me that it would be a lot harder to clean than the old jet systems.” 8:22:02 PM 10/17/04 “Hohum news, but fun to read spelling like mine.” 9:21:14 AM 10/18/04 It is new technology...... “It's actually a pretty cool thing. Time will tell if there are clogging problems or not. Here's the link of the company who makes the ceramic disc. http://www.vapore.com/ last edited: 10/18/04 9:54:03 AM” 9:52:03 AM 10/18/04 “ooo I saw an add for a TITTANIUM "Pepsi can" stove that can boil water in 5 minutes.... I want one!!!” 12:52:47 PM 10/18/04 Capillary stove pump “We are developing a new stove using a capillary action stove pump. Here is my response to someone on the yahoo site who was upset we weren't making targeting this product specifically for ultralightweight and price conscious backpackers. What we saw, and continue to see as the market for this product is that it provides all of the benefits that have drawn people from white gas to canister stoves over the last few years. Ease of use, ability to simmer, lightweight(relatively), compact. What it also does is avoid some of the drawbacks of canisters, such as having to carry out empty canisters, ability to bring only the fuel you need, and cost for the canisters. Would the majority of people on this list have preferred a 4 oz version with a minimal pot support for one liter or less pots, an 8 minute boil time, difficult priming, and having to refill the resevoir after every two liters of water boiled? I believe that they would. Did we use market research including extensive customer surveys to determine what our current customers wanted, and do everything we could to deliver that to them? I know that we did. A few disclaimers...I am not saying that there aren't alot of people who value lightweight over all else in making design considerations...it's like backpacking's version of Atkins out there, and we are aware of it. The minimal stove that Rob at Vapore made was a one off. We are still working on the production processes that it will take to make this pump work with our stove, or any earlier design that we could speak of in a mass production type way. This is the reason we will not be selling these until next July. End quote: If the ceramic pump clogs, you can burn out the impurities. I am hopeful that the final solution is more elegant, but we have been able to add a small amount of white gas into a piece of tin foil, add the pump, and light it and it will clear all clogs. This is not something we expect to be done often, but if burning poor fuel it can be done in the field with the resources at hand. I didn't mention efficiency, but we expect at least twice the liters of waters boiled per oz. compared to standard white gas stoves. Rick Klug Cascade Designs 800-531-9531” 4:51:43 PM 10/18/04 “Rick, thanks for the response. It is great to see that you a manufacturer pay attention to the backpacker boards. Send me one of the stoves to test and I will post the results on this board and the other side. (shameless plug for free product) Keep up the good work at MSR, I see you also have a really cool looking new snowshoe coming out.” 6:50:01 PM 10/18/04 “Mighty nice of you too take the time to respond and offer more info on your news tove Rick. I look forward to hearing from users.” 6:56:07 PM 10/18/04 “Cool that MSR chimed in. I gotta agree, there do seem to be some nice advantages. last edited: 10/18/04 6:57:49 PM” 6:57:20 PM 10/18/04 10:00:43 PM 8/26/09 “there have been white gas stoves that don't require pumping for ages.” 10:28:22 PM 8/26/09 “whoa, i went way too far back on that thread! whatever happened to that stove design?” 10:30:17 PM 8/26/09 “Good gawd that sling biol is a disaster waiting to happen. BTW- was that Gojo?” 2:21:23 AM 8/27/09 “sling biol?” 6:10:07 AM 8/27/09 “Is it a new Stovie technology? I hope.” 6:38:04 AM 8/27/09 “I haven't seen that video before. Yikes. Sounds like someone who'd hang around here.” 6:40:11 AM 8/27/09 “that video was hilarious. i love that movie, btw. i have a "bushbuddy" stove that works much the same way. it's awesome but i haven't used it much.” 7:00:31 AM 8/27/09 “I THINK MY FAVORITE STOVE IS STILL THE WHISPERLITE!! WHAT? I SAID "WHISPERLITE!" HUH? NO: "WHISPERLITE!" WHAT??” 7:26:37 AM 8/27/09 “OH Lord. Now crash will have a hissy fit.” 7:27:49 AM 8/27/09 “Yeah, but when it's pouring rain, the last thing I wanna do is try and find dry wood.” 7:35:12 AM 8/27/09 “What's the latest coke can with holes poked in it?” 7:50:48 AM 8/27/09 “i can generally get a fire going even in the pouring rain. a small fire with twigs like the bushbuddy are easy to get going if you get some decent tinder. also, when i have used it i carry a small number of esbit tabs as a backup. they can be used to easily light fires (one cube can be broken into quarters to light 4 fires) or just be used to boil water on their own.” 7:51:04 AM 8/27/09 “I still like the MSR superfly...worked for me everytime. For really cold ugly conditions. I use the Whisperlite International...” 7:57:39 AM 8/27/09 “The latest Fancy Feast technology ----” 11:41:55 AM 8/27/09
