WOW!
I read last night on the Mt. Washington Obeservatory's website that they had gotten snow, so I quickly decided I'd dayhike up it today and get my fix. You see, I had planned on doing an overnighter this weekend.. but cold rain and the need to grade some projects forced me to nix those plans. So.. I was stoked to learn that there was no huge threat of rain for today, and I relished at the chance to see snow for the first time this season.

I'll make this brief, as I'm very tired. But I started to see snow on the ground at 4000', and more of it as I got higher. I got some awesome pictures which I'll post later today.

I'm still pumped from getting to see snow! There wasn't a heck of a lot at the summit (maybe two inches or so), but very cool none-the-less. It was my second time summiting Mt. Washington, and I also flew up it at a pretty good pace, despite it being pretty slick. 4.1 miles, 4260' of elevation gain, and I made it to the top in exactly three hours.

My pics are up:

This was the first time I hiked into snow-capped peaks. Before, it had always been just snow everywhere. It was really cool to see the snow levels gradually increase with the elevation. Very cool hike.

Roam - meterologists say THE worst weather in the world is up there. The average windspeed for an entire year is 35.3 mph, the highest wind speed recorded anywhere in the world is from there (231 mph), and it can snow at any given time of the year.

I got those fun facts from http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/index.php.

Pretty nice try, Yam. But you should use "wicked" to preface another adjective. Example" "wicked cool pics". ;-)

Uh oh, Gremlin's motor is starting to run.

Artex, when you day hike mt wa, do you pack like you would spend the night? I just read this article in the NG Adventure magazine. They tell you to always pack for a night out when climbing mtn. wa. they are referring to a 1994 incident.

No, I don't. But I do prepare more than I normally would. I bring along extra clothing and food. My first-aid/emergency kit also has a space blanket, but that's the extent of my shelter.

Nice pictures Artex. I like the rime on the summit sign.

Glad to hear you packed extra for the hike. It can be tough convincing people that a simple 4.1 mile walk could kill them! (but, its 55 degrees and sunny . . .why do I need fleece, a shell, hat and mittens??? I don't want to carry al that crap up this steep hill).

My hiking bud is from Colorado, hiked a lot of the 14ers, and didn't get it. Our first hike we started at the base of Madison on the Daniel Webster Scout trail. Gorgeous fall day. Sunny, foliage, clear, blue, 50 degrees.

At the summit it was blowing ice sideways. Visibility was 30 feet or less, you couldn't hear a shouted voice more than 5 feet away . .. .

Of course . .this was 1989 . .before I had invested in fleece or anything . .so I am in jeans, cotton long underwear etc . . .

some fun.

Anyhoo .. . .your picutres are great. Thanks for sharing. Glad you are doing what you moved north to do!

PS: Yam . ..i think its called an adverb. WIcked is a verb that modifies that adjective. If you say wicked pics. It simply means they are evil.

Wicked cool pics means .. . .well . . .it means that they are wicked cool pics.

Let me give you a purely hypothetical example.

let say Artex put his video skills to work with you and produced some "Paris Hilton" type home movies.

Those would be wicked awesome movies.

Now let's say he, as a member in good faith of the HMWHC, distributed those movies to all the guys on TT and those girls who are interested in you (Gemini, Embear, lyra et al) . ..

from your perspective those movies would now just be "wicked movies" (evil).

Of course, from everyone else's perspective they would still be:

wicked awesome movies.

Does this example help you to understand the appropriate use of wicked???

it sure helps me .. .

Good point Gemini.
I always hike with enough to spend the night...in all seasons, all mountain hikes. I might not be comfortable, but I'd live. It's a wicked smaht thing to do. :)

Soooooooo much to learn. For instance.

Many people (perhaps you too) perceive New Englanders to be icey, cold, unfriendly bastigs.

This is not true. It is only a facade to hide our true warmth, caring and sharing nature.

I would be very happy to demonstrate all of these qualities.

Of course, to preserve the facade . ..discretion will have to be our watchword . . .

In fact .. .we will have to be . . .wicked discreet.

I grew up just a bit inland from Salem. My Dad grew up in Marblehead (right next to Salem). I have spent a ton of time in both places. Worked a couple of summers at a Marina in Salem, and several summers in Marblehead.
