Trip Report: Damn, this bait tastes good !

“So today I decided to take my kids to the local fishing lake and drown a few worms. My mom's husband had suggested that I try getting rigged up for catfish and troll the deep end of the lake.

So we get out there, and I get the kids started. We cast worms out for a while. Yesterday I took my daughter fishing, and she learned to cast and bait a hook, so once I got her going she was good. (She actually caught a small one yesterday, so she was psyched to try again.) My son, well different story. He's still learning to cast, and more importantly, how not to get his line caught up on nearby trees. But eventually both kids are watching floats, reeling in when they need to, and casting without too much trouble.

It's a nice, but cloudy day, and I have everyone in two layers to make sure we stay warm. We eat lunch, and sit and watch our floats. After eating I start to get my rig set up for catfish. Then my daughter says, "Daddy, either there are a lot more fish popping to the surface or it's starting to rain. Sure enough, the rain is starting to come down. I get the kids in their ponchos. My son says he wants to go home. My daughter wants to stay. The rain isn't bothering her. It starts to rain harder, so I bow to the inevitable, and pack everything up, thinking I'll put the kids in the truck while I do a little more fishing.

But it doesn't work out that way. The rain increases, and I decide to go ahead and just take 'em home. My daughter is a little disappointed, but not too bad.

We get home, and I have an entire pound of chicken livers that I bought to bait the catfish with. These are regular, human-edible chicken livers, so I bread them in a little flour and deep-fry them. Yum!”

“I haven't had chicken livers in years. There's a little fried chicken joint here that makes some really good ones.”

“Lucky you weren't fishing with cheese-dough!”

“chicken livers are nasty, barely even fit for fish bait.

however, some old grimy guy on the pier down here once told me that for fish bait, "If you won't eat it, the fish prolly won't either"”

“Bummer about the rain, but cool that your daughter is hooked (get it?).”
