“I spoke with my mother last Thursday and she told me she was going to a party at my brother's place dressed as a bag lady (not much costume required there) and was going to hand out candy to the kids. Immediately the lightbulb went off in my underutilized cranium.

Saturday morning I rounded up my costume, hopped in the truck and made the 300 mile trip to Madison. I lurked about the area, visiting a few bars, until it got dark enough for official trick or treating time and drove to my brother's house. I knew she wouldn't recognize me in the costume, so I walked up to the door and rang the bell. When she answered, resplendent in a goofy dress, straw hat with a big flower, green wool socks and men's golf shoes, I hollered "trick or treat", burst through the door, ran to the refrigerator, grabbed the 12 pack I knew would be there, and made my exit. The air was filled with expletives as I ziggeyed down the street to my parked truck and made my get away.

An hour later, sans costume, I again knocked on the door carrying the same 12 pack. Her eyes immediately lit up and we had a couple of beers together as I listened to her tell me the story of how some bastard stole her beer. For once in my life I was the hero, coming in with her favorite beer after some scoundrel had done her in. I just may never tell her the truth...why start now.”

“Yes, it's true and only a partial payback. However, I have just been advised she's coming up for rifle/deer season. I think I'll dress her in camo, fix some deer horns on her head and set her under a tree with a six pack. I'm going to get my share of that $1.62 that's in the will one way or the other.”
