today is the 50th anniversary of the publication of LOTR: Fellowship.... in the united states

sadly i never finished this amazing epic, however, about a week or so ago i picked it up again visiting the tree-house, and i just finished the "sign at the prancing pony" chapter last night. defineitely going to finish this time (last time got about halway thru before quitting). picked up and read "the hobbit" in an AT shelter somewhere, probably VA or PA. i was hoping to run across "fellowship" somewhere along the way but never did.

Will anyone ever write anything that is comparable in proportion to these books? Perhaps, but not too soon, I would think. Then again, as society gets more image oriented and dumbed down, perhaps never. Still my personal favorite reading experience. Love those books. Happy anniversary, JRR!!

Treebeard - I don't think anyone will ever be able to write with such and ability to make you feel like you are in the book. However, I have found an author who I think comes fairly close, and that is Robert Jordan. He has a series called the Wheel of Time which in my opinion is very good. Check it out and let me know what you think.

FYI - It is like ten books and unfinished, but if you are a slow reader like me then by the time you get through the existing books maybe the new one(s) will be out.

I don't go through a lot of books, due to time restraints. So, I may just be in that league! :)

Asimov. Foundation & Robot series. Although I thought Empire series was relatively weak, nothing compares to what he did.

bear...
you are correct...Issac tied all the loose ends up before his death and merged Foundation with Robots. A materful epic journey...and Heinlien did the same thing. between the two, the future of humanity has been mapped out.

As for Tolkien...there have been many attepts to duplicate the tale. Ursala LeGuin has come closest with her EarthSea trilogy. Sci Fi channel will be showing a 2 part mini-series in December of EarthSea...it looks FANTASTIC!

and since someone invoked my name...what do you want?

I don't know about youse guys, but I was more than a little surprised when Isaac brought the robots and the Foundation series together at the end.

Re: Ursula K.'s work....The Tombs of Atuan was some Spooky Sheet Senor! I shall say no more (in anticipation of the upcoming Sci-Fi presentation). I recently found out she didn't stop at three! I've got lots of catching up to do!!

(BTW -- In the film, the guy at The Prancing Pony with the Ferret was Peter Jackson)

Robert Jordan has a series going that's has 10 books so far, called "The Wheel of Time". While it's no JRR, he is heavily influenced by Tolkien, and you can see it in his storytelling. Also, the books read very much like JRR's and the stories are similiarly epic in style. And best of all, it's not completed yet, so there are still more books to come -- there has been one every 2 years or so as of late.

The first book is called "Eye of the World", which I understand has recently been re-released as two separate books: "From the Two Rivers" and "To the Blight". Definitely worth checking out.
