Haven't done much caching due to work. Maybe things will let up a little this coming year.

Just finished section 6 and part of section 7 of the Pinhoti. Great hike!

Spent one night in the Blue Mt. shelter and a rat ate a hole in my shirt. I think I'll pitch my tent from now on.

Leatherneck - I saw you signed up for Sipsey in Feb. It should be fun.

Where are parts 6 and 7? Is that Cheaha and the next section north? If so, did you start at Adams Gap?

I'm going to do my best to make the Sipsey in Feb.

We started at FS Road 518 and worked our way south intending on finishing at Adams Gap. We bailed shorly into section 7 (Blue Mt. Shelter to Adams Gap)due to a water shortage and the fact that my buddy realized that he left his keys to his car in my truck back at the starting point.

I haven't hiked anything north of Cheaha. There is a nice loop around there that I just keep coming back to. I want to try the Coleman Lake section that is north of I20. I hear it's pretty nice.

Was there much ice up top or is that section at a lower elev? I hope yall enjoyed the trip. The Pinhoti is nice, sort of an uncrowded, AT lite.

No, not much ice. Section 6 averages around 1000 ft.

ranger station is on 33 on the outskirts of Double Springs headed toward Sipsey, phone # 205-489-5111

Another source of maps if you arrive after ranger station closes would be the Black Warrior Trading Post (or what ever they are calling it now) on 33 about 12 miles north of Sipsey (a bit south of Moulton) at the intersection of 33 and 36 (blinking light) Wren is the location name but I can't remember seeing a sign for Wren on 33.

To jump subjects a bit, is anyone planning any Sipsey group-hiking trips this fall? I'm a long time Sipsey hiker and fan from Huntsville. I've never posted, but have read many accounts of past hiking trips and would enjoy such an event.

Thanks for the quick reply, Mrs Opie. Bama can vouch for me being legitimate as I've emailed him on different occasions with questions concerning the Sipsey.

I'm hoping to put my annual trip together in March, but a possible trip to Utah my nix it this year. I probably won't have a chance to go this fall unless it's a quick trip with my son. Bama and I have emailed about getting together, but it's been awhile.

HOI - I haven't heard a peep past that thread over on Bama hiking that we both saw.

He posted a message on the "Stovey's OK" thread, I think, but that's all.

I haven't had the time to get down there and probably won't for a few weeks. Kid's soccer and all that.

I plan to spend as much time as possible in the Sipsey this winter and spring with probably another Jericho trip thrown in to see how much the place has changed. I'll be very interested in a group trip as long as it is after football season :)

LOL..I had a woman who works at The University of Mobile, say that some folks she knew got lost there awhile back....( I think she said 3 people...) and that the guy was a seasoned backpacker, but his wife wasn't,....and she said she heard that Bankhead is one of the top ten scariest places in Alabama, amd that it is the place if someone killed you and dumped your body there, they would never find it....
....lol..hahahahahahahaha111...I told her I have never been scared in Sipsey, and I have camped there many times alone.....

Sipsey
I was talking with a guy from Huntsville the other day and he was telling me about all the horror story's he had heard about the Sipsey. Things like the trails not being posted very well, and how easy it was to get lost...all I could say is, well it is a wilderness area ya know... I for one hope the Sipsey never gets sign's at every turn, I can get that on the interstate, let's keep the Sipsey Wild....

lol....I think we should keep the horror stories going and maybe make up a few of our own to ward off visitors!!!!
