Another vote for the Half Dome. It's a wonderful tent. I can actually stand in it. (standing bent at the waist.) which is nice for putting pants on. It's comfy and dry.

if you can...
stand up in a half dome, then you must be a pixie...and if you can bend at the waist so that you can stand up in it...then I'd like to help pull you pants on (or off).

I'm now seriously considering the Kelty Gunnison. Anyone familiar with this? It's a bit bigger than the halfdome, weighs about the same, and has (2) 12sf vestibules. It look ideal for my son and I and on the off chance I get my wife to try hiking again. She'll hike and she'll camp, but doesn't like the 2 simultaneously...yet.

Hey, if you have a REI near you, check and see when their "members Only garage sale" is.... You might be able to score a half dome that's in decent shape for a great price!

Can't stand up in the half dome, but you can sit up without hitting your head on the top of the tent.... :-)

The nearest REI is in Atlanta, 2 hrs away.

actually, i was going to offer the Gunniston 2 as a suggestion, not because ive used it, i haven't, but because it did get good marks in Bacpacker's 2004
Gear Guide as having an 'excellent price-to-performance' ratio. At 5 1/4 lbs and $140 its right
in your price/weight target, but of course you already know this. :) In fact, i've seen it for as low
as $119 i think.

i would(insert throat clearing noise) like to offer one other alternative..at 5 1/2 pounds and $170 and that is a tent I can vouch for, and thats the Mountain Hardwear Light Wedge 2. Well, i have the 3-person model which is of course, wider, but the construction
and materials and design are topnotch thrughout. Ill
carry my 6+ Lb 3-person model most anywhere before going back to my NF Slickrock at 4lbs. The
Slickrock is now my 'ultralight only' tent now that
I have the light wedge 3.

thats my 2˘ worth.

good luck with the wife...i know where youre coming from.

you don't need...
to stand up in the tent...kneeling on the knees is esential for tent sex though.

DH...your stik will be traveling this week. It will accompany me to Mt Rogers for the season opener. If you want it...come and get it. (I'm such a tease).

Are you really taking it with you?

I love the stick, I miss the stick, thanks for looking into a fix for me.

How big are the two people?
By colder months are you talking about something that can handle alot of snow?

If you're a regular sized guy and she's a midget might I suggest a Clip Flashlight.

Oops sorry, didn't see it was Maple asking the question. Guess you'd want something that can handle more snow up there, and I'm guessing you're not a midget.

REI Half Dome is roomy, lightweight and within that price range. Actually, it might be a three season tent.

I don't think you're going to find a 4-season under $150. And what's wrong with Sierra Designs? I've got two SD tents and I like them both. My Clip 2 has kept me nice and dry in torrential rain.

And you can errr, ummm, get plenty comfortable in a Clip two if one of you is a midget.

You probably don't need a 4-season tent. A lot of 3-season tents will hold up in the colder months. Just get something with a full fly.

I think we've covered this on several occasions. You can't go wrong with the REI halfdome in most weather. I used it last winter for two people and a dog. (read, plenty of room) The dual vestibules are invaluable. It is relatively light and very affordable. Of course I haven't shopped for a two person tent lately, but I looooove my halfdome.

Hey Mapes
The WV trip sounds great. I will put myself down for a maybe. That might be the same time as the Philmont trip. Stuart Campground is a great choice. Lots to do. Hot showers. And Geo knows all the great fossil digs. I remember Tree mentioning he wanted to do that.

You can't go wrong with the REI half dome. It has held up great for me and even survived abuse from boy scouts.

Mapes, dear
You DO NOT have to be a member to buy from REI.
I second or third the REI Half Dome suggestion. Great tent for two.

Maybe she needs the extra room for 'doggie style', but is too embarassed to explain. ;-)

That looks like an OK tent, mapleleaf, but according to the diagram, you can only 69 in it.

It's heavier than the REI Camp Dome 2 I linked to above though.
