Maptech Terrain Navigator “I finally bought the set for Pennsylvania. Will pick up West Virginia later (when my finances recover). Wow! I loaded in maps of some favorite places, then clicked on 3D. What a trip! The Delaware Water Gap looks like the Delaware Water Gap! Thanks for the good advice. I expect I will play with it over the winter while my leg comes around and be prepared to put it to good use in the spring.” 4:09:52 PM 10/22/04 “*bump*” 5:20:45 PM 10/22/04 “*bump* i feel incredible country bumpkinish, and non-techy, just reading about this. have fun going hill dale, from your barca lounger, geo and get back to your old self soon” 10:17:07 PM 10/22/04 “Did Ghoulbeet really just thank bacpac/ miss ann thrope/bbw ???? Can I play?” 11:37:06 AM 10/23/04 “*bump again* Where the hell'd bacpac go?” 1:40:20 PM 10/25/04 “It's the signs of the apocalypse! The Red Sox might win the World Series, and Geo's thanking bacpac. What's next, Pennsy's has decided he has enough gear and won't buy any more? RUN FOR THE HILLS!” 1:45:32 PM 10/25/04 “Pennsy :)” 1:57:29 PM 10/25/04 “Where the hell'd bacpac go?” Do we really care as long as he stays there? Sounds like a cool toy geo!” 2:01:10 PM 10/25/04 “Yeah, turning a mountain around on a 360 in 3D is neat. Can't wait to latch onto West-By-God to really have some fun. The Whites and Daks would be neat too.” 2:29:28 PM 10/25/04 got a link or sumthin? “more info pleeze, Geo. Is this a CD program?” 6:44:11 AM 10/26/04 “bacpac, anne thrope, and bbw were all the same? Dang.. I'm slipping. I knew two of the three were.” 7:07:32 AM 10/26/04 “Aw man, now Pennsky is gotta have one! Keep the Wolf Gap map, I bought two more.” 7:07:49 AM 10/26/04 Pennsy “http://www.maptech.com/land/terrainnavigator/index.cfm?infopg=buy It's $100 a state for the basic Terrain Navigator, $200-some a pop for the pro. Basic does not load the maps into the GPS, unless I can find a way that's not in the instruction book. I don't know about the pro version. If that's what you want to do, you might inquire.” 12:50:56 PM 10/27/04 “You da man, MarkO. Thanks! I owe ya. Yikes, Geo. That's big bucks a pop, even for "His Slutness."” 2:38:25 PM 10/29/04 “You are welcome. The Red Sox did win the World Series. I will have to take a break for a few weeks. bbw bacpac Miss Anne Thrope last edited: 10/29/04 2:45:25 PM” 2:42:41 PM 10/29/04 “I think we all need a break. Schilling's bloody foot, Martinez, Ramirez rolling in the grass, Damon's hair flying behind him, Tito spitting tobacco juice, La Russa trying valiantly to keep his eyebrows separated, ... it's like a bad dream. Yeah Pennsy, big bucks. I have Pennsylvania and will buy West Virginia, and perhaps Virginia. Pennsylvania covers the A.T. in Jersey.” 2:52:07 PM 10/29/04 “I am glad you found the software useful Geo. I did not think the 3-D feature was particuarly helpful for me. I see 3-D when I look at a topo map, but I have posted 3-D images on trip planning websites. Play with the scaling and 3-D, it can improve the image.” 3:30:14 PM 10/29/04 “You can set the vertical exaggeration on the 3D to something approximating reality, or higher for dramatic effect. I've also used the enlarge and shrink tool to tailor the maps to the area I want. Yeah, so many features; so little time. I just wish there were a way to load the maps into my GPS instead of the crappy map that Magellan provides.” 3:32:36 PM 10/29/04 “The maps are accurate enough to place waypoints on creeks, peaks, etc and then download to your GPS. Print the Map. When you find something new on your hike you can record the waypoint on your GPS and upload to your computer when you get home.” 3:37:52 PM 10/29/04 “Yeah, I was doing that with the free program I have. The free program covers the whole country and has satellite photos, so you can toggle back and forth between the two. The satellite photos actually give more accurate waypoints than the topos. I just printed out a series of 3d maps for an area along the Pa. AT where a mining enterprise operated in the 1840s. It gives a great visual image of the area. Yes, I have been able to get along with topo maps for decades. Most of the 3D maps I have seen have so much vertical exaggeration it makes it useless except for eyewash. I like this program because you can approximate the actual. Once I get my leg straightened out I will put all this info into practical usage. There are some areas fairly close by where I want to do some surveys with the GPS, and the tools will all come in handy. The 1:100,000 scale can be cut down to about 1:250,000, I noticed. The only real problem I have with this program is the fact that it comes in sections, with a different CD for each. I need to see if I can put together a seamless version across CD boundaries.” 4:01:44 PM 10/29/04 CD boundries “You can't. At least not on the version I have. Users have been asking for this for along time.” 5:43:41 PM 10/29/04
