I think you have an unhealthy obsession with sixers ;~)

Randy, that would be cool. It would cut down our BPing commute, wouldn't it?

Gem, I hadn't thought of SC opportunities, but heck yeah!

There are tons of schools in those mountains. Seems like there is also UNC-Asheville.

Appalachian State is in Boone. ASU is a pretty good sized school.

Warren Wilson College. I have been attending MTSU studying Outdoor recreation and administration. The commute itself sucks without the fact that I work until 4:00 am most days unless I work until 5 or 6. Warren Wilson is in Asheville and it is a college for outdoor leadership and management. They work closely with Outward Bound NC. Angie could easily find a job there I think (we haven't researched it completely yet).

NG Adventure mag had an article on Asheville a month or two ago. That would be a great town to live in. Also, plenty of bars to keep the bills paid while finishing school.

I live near Raleigh...had always thought of moving to asheville but it's to expensive....along with Hendersonville and Brevard. Think TN is where I'd really like to be, Cosby area for certain. But schools would be a travel for sure.

i did the Biltmore thing over Labor Day, i liked it, but seems like the tour was kinda pricey for what you really get.

Most impressive thing I saw was that the guy had Napolean's chess set in one of his sitting rooms. thats just cool!

That is an awesome house though, I bet its really pretty at Christmas, specially if they get some snow.

I live in a small town called Ellenboro,NC Rutherford County near Forest City.

Curafreak I also attended classes at MTSU many years ago. Lived in Murfreesboro for 4 years as the local Army Recruiter and tended bar on the weekends at the Campus Pub. Does it still exist?

who lives in NC?
I live in NC, right in the middle of the state. From here you are within reasonable driving distance of both the mts. and the beach. Charlotte and Greensboro are both about an hr. at most away. You might have zero interest in this program, (Forestry/Forest Technology), but check it out. www.montgomery.cc.nc.us They also have a fantastic pottery program. Its quiet here very rural with lots of water and woods... Below is some info. on local sites...

Welcome to the Uwharrie National Forest

NORTH CAROLINA

The Land of Many Uses

The Uwharrie National Forest was first purchased by the federal government in 1931 during the Great Depression. The land was known as the Uwharrie Reservation.

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed these federal lands in Montgomery, Randolph, and Davidson Counties the Uwharrie National Forest. It is one of the most recently formed in the National Forest System.

Though small, at only 50,189 acres, the Uwharrie provides a variety of natural resources, including clean rivers and streams, diverse vegetation for scenery, wildlife habitat and wood products. There is also a wide variety of recreational activities, and the Forest is a natural setting for tourism and economic development.

History

The Uwharrie National Forest is rich in history. It is named for the Uwharrie Mountains, some of the oldest in North America. According to geologists, the Uwharries were created from an ancient chain of volcanoes. The 1,000-foot hills of today were once 20,000-foot peaks.

The Uwharrie is located at the crossroads of both prehistoric and historic settlements. Their legacy is one of the greatest concentrations of archeological sites in the Southeast. Left undisturbed, these sites and artifacts give a record of our heritage.

The first large gold discovery in the United States occurred around 1799 at the nearby Reed Gold Mine. In the early 1800\\\'s gold was found in the Uwharries, with a later boom during the depression of the 1930\\\'s. Old mining sites still remain, and part-time prospectors still pan in the streams and find traces of gold dust.

Today

The Uwharrie is dynamic and responsive to public needs. It continues to provide timber, wildlife, water, recreation opportunities, and a natural setting for tourism and economic development. The Forest is located within a 2-hour drive from the largest population centers in the State. Recreational use is growing, especially in the Badin Lake area and along the 20-mile, Uwharrie National Recreation Trail.

Badin Lake is one of the largest bodies of water included in the series of reservoirs within the Yadkin- PeeDee River drainage system. The entire watershed is known as the Uwharrie Lakes Region.

Badin Lake is a popular setting for many different recreation activities, including camping, hiking, fishing, boating, and hunting. The area is rich game land for deer and wild turkey, and a home for bald eagles. Visitors to the Forest can also enjoy other Piedmont attractions, including Town Creek Indian Mound, North Carolina Zoological Park, Reeds Gold Mine, and pottery shopping in the Seagrove area.

Havenmore I don't mean to be a stick in the mud, but...... for you ppl spouting off how good backpacking is in central NC have to lay off the crack. The reason you backpack there is because you are unfortunate to live there and don't feel like driving too far for a weekender.
(Ask ski. I lived in the armpit of Research Triangle Park area for 4 lawng years, so I know.)

I gradiated from Asheville High and grew up near there. I'm now a half hour west of there in Waynesville. But for buying into here..... the market ain't too down like many parts of the country, not in Asheville's Buncombe County and my Haywood Co either. You ain't gonna find cheap here, unless you go trailerpark (which I don't much advise). If you can drive a little, look a little NW up I-26 into northern Buncombe Co and southern Madison Co (where resides Mars Hill college, a little campus that I don't know too much about tho). If you're looking there, you'll really want over the county line to stay outa Buncombe's high tax bracket.

I grew up in Canton (what's that smell? it's the smell of MONEY!), moved to Asheville for my highschool years, and am now in Waynesville. We'll be moving a little farther W in the spring to Sylva, where there's WCU. I tell ya I like the community and feel of Waynesville more'n any place I've been tho, so I'd suggest here for sure. Deffinitely rent for a while, while you look to buy if you thank you might buy property here.

Curra, whur you coming from? I can shoot you some real estate stuff if you want.

Btw - a huge hidey ho to spam and ski!!!!!!!

ape, I didn't see where havenmore said it was great backpacking in the middle of the state. He said that it was great to live there because he is halfway between the beach and the mountains so he can enjoy both. Not that it matters, anyone in his right mind knows backpacking anywhere other the mountains is lame.

I'm not dissin ya brother when I lived in Kannapolis it was either there or Crowders Mountain State Park and I ended up going to the latter more often. I still occasionally go there when I need a quick fix. I understand completely your situation Bill and I am blessed to be perty close to the mountains. I can be at Linville Gorge in about an hour,Mt Mitchell in a little over an hour, and the Smokies in about 2 hours and I can even be at Mt Rogers in VA in a little over 3 hours!
