Buttkicker Revisited - Nov. 6-7, 2004

“Pennsy and I are redoing are buttkicker trip from several weeks back, which was postponed because of cold, rainy weather. We're doing it again. You're welcome to join us, if you think you can handle it.”

“Man, I wish you were doing this trip next weekend. I'm trying to find a way to go backpacking in New England Halloween Weekend.”

“the 6-7 is no good for me cuz my Dad needs my help. Hopefully will get a trip up to NE this weekend though. Not sure where. Maybe Mt. Washington maybe Mt. Mansfield and maybe Mt. Greylock. Waiting on my brother to see what he wants to do.”

I like your idea of the shuttle. Are you talking about Haystack Rd off rte 3? I've never been there but it looks like a fairly short shuttle. Even if it's just the 2 of us, I could probably get to Haystack Rd Friday night, camp in the car, and have you pick me up in the morning.”

“Yep, Haystack Road is what I'm thinking. It should allow us to finish the trip at a reasonable hour.

Yep, I got crampons. You're right, there's a reasonable chance we'll need them. The past two weekends, I've ran across paper-thin ice, but that could increase expontentially over the next week and a half.”

“damn, sucks I can't do this trip. I just bought new crampons too and want to get some good use out of them.”

“lol, my Dad has a big sale event at his hobby shop on 11/6/04 and plus I have a lot of moving to do into my new pad.

Got Petzl 12 pointers. Pretty sharp and could work for ice climbing. The Whites are definitely in my crystal ball for this winter.”

“Perkins Notch Shelter, up to Carter Dome, over South Carter, over Middle Carter, over North Carter, up to Mt. Moriah and back down to Imp Shelter . . . now that's a buttkicker . . . with FULL gear . . . not some wussy daypack. lol! That was my little trek this Sunday . . . 5300' total ascent, 4700' total descent, 13.6 mi. . . . sweet . . . :)

But seriously, this should be a great trip. I've never hiked this route, but from the pictures I've seen and from what I've read and heard, it's an awesome one.”

Artex - how far do you live from the Whites now?

I'll share those "very insane thoughts" when I'm sure I haven't gone over the edge . . . :)

It takes me about one hour to officially cross into the Whites, but to most trailheads, it usually takes between an hour and a half to an hour and forty-five minutes. It's a pleasant, country drive over for me also, so I really fully enjoy my weekend excursions there.

Bummer you didn't live closer.. you'd be wiping the floor with me as far as hiking stamina.”

“There's a good chance of snow where I live this weekend, so that pretty much guarantees any precipitation will be in the form of snow up in the mountains. BRING IT!

Dang, will we have to bust out the snowshoes? I'll check the trail reports on VFTT later this week.”

“The National Weather Service says total snow accumulations could be 4 inches by tonight. We'll most definitely have more in the higher elevations. I'm still doubting at this point if snowshoes will be necessary, but I'm going to throw mine in the trunk just in case. Just a thought.”
