Good Morning - My Street is on FireView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 28 of 28 messages posted.
“5:30 am and apparently an apartment building just around the corner (I can see smoke & the fire teams & new helicopter flying above) is on fire” 5:11:37 AM 10/27/04 “Oh #&%!$ - the flames are big now and I just saw a child being carried down the street to an ambulance OMG” 5:14:31 AM 10/27/04 “three helicopters are now flying over my street” 5:23:10 AM 10/27/04 “What a way to wake up!” 5:40:45 AM 10/27/04 “What no pictures?” 6:06:53 AM 10/27/04 “Maybe Godzilla is back in Manhattan. I love the helicopter scenes where they can't hit Godzilla but they tear the hell outta the buildings.” 7:19:16 AM 10/27/04 “Bummer. Hope everyone is ok.” 7:20:46 AM 10/27/04 “and where was Crash Bang when all this was happening?” 8:05:08 AM 10/27/04 “Hmmm...does sound like a crash bang thing doesnt it?” 8:17:07 AM 10/27/04 “Thang, not thing.” 8:25:21 AM 10/27/04 “Walked by the building today - it turns out it was the house just behind the apartments across the street from me. Good thing for backyards in Brooklyn or the whole damn row of apartments could have gone poof. The entire house and adjoining 2 car garage burned. It's completely gutted. I don't know if everyone is okay. Am concerned about the small child I saw being carried down the street. Those poor people. Everything gone and winter's here. This is the 2nd major fire on my corner in two/three years. My building has no fire escapes. I'm looking for a new apartment. Fires scare the hell out of me.” 9:45:27 AM 10/27/04 “The latest from our gal on the street.... Uh.......I'm not sayin' that you're "on the street"” 9:46:42 AM 10/27/04 “several years ago, an apartment building across the parking lot from mine burned. A couple of kids got killed. It really shook me and a lot of other people up pretty good. Fire scares the hell out of me too.” 9:47:06 AM 10/27/04 “What floor are you on?” 9:47:07 AM 10/27/04 “Twinks, get a rappelling rig...... ....and may Gog be with you” 9:49:36 AM 10/27/04 “3rd floor of a four story brownstone. I've been feeling paranoid ever since I moved in. The fire trucks this morning scared the snot out of me until I realized the fire was across the way. But then again everything is gas out here...makes one nervous.” 9:51:02 AM 10/27/04 “They used to sell escape ladders for people who lived in second-story rooms that rolled up and could be pushed under a bed or stored in the room somewhere. My parents had one for their bedroom. I don't know if they make one long enough for a third-story room though.” 9:58:34 AM 10/27/04 “Maybe if I buy two plungers I could plunger suck my way down...” 10:01:02 AM 10/27/04 “hey i left nyc last friday!” 10:01:35 AM 10/27/04 “Yeah punk ass, you were here for three weeks and not once did you say "hey, that Twinks lives in NYC. Maybe I should ask Mapleleaf to call here so I can meet up with her for drink in Brooklyn". Hmpfh. :( I'm offended” 10:09:53 AM 10/27/04 “A rappel rope and belay device may not be a bad idea. Only need much cheaper static line for rappelling, probably get away with 1/4 inch nylon from local hardware store, or even the real cheap polypropylene. From Home Depot Crawford 3/8 in. x 100 ft. Black With Orange Polypropylene Truck Rope Black color with orange tracer. Uv resistant. Meets california highway patrol standards. 225 lb. Safe working load. Internet/Catalog # 741210 Store SKU# 212490 Price: $7.49/ea Only things you need are something real solid in your apartment to tie the end on, and knowing how to tie a knot that will hold like the figure 8 feedback.” 10:19:01 AM 10/27/04 “8mm X 30m rope is about $60. That's almost 100 feet and would make a good and safe double for a thirty foot rappel.” 11:16:34 AM 10/27/04 “Install a large eye-bolt into a stud in the back of a closet, tie off AHEAD of time, leaving the rope coiled right there? I don't think I would want to tie off under the stresss of knowing I have 30 seconds to get the f*#K out. I think I would forget the belay too, just hand-over-hand it the 20 or 30 feet. Under the adrenaline rush of necessity you can do amazing things.” 11:19:20 AM 10/27/04 “We have a fire escape ladder stashed under BowlderSon's bed. Yes, we deployed it and tested it when we first got it. Works pretty well!” 11:50:38 AM 10/27/04 “you could even tie knots along the length of the rope to assist the hand over hand descent” 11:53:43 AM 10/27/04 “Shee-it, you could do a Bruce Willis from a flaming building....way cool!” 11:55:00 AM 10/27/04 “"you could do a Bruce Willis from a flaming building" MarkO Just make sure you keep a gun with you so you can shoot out the window below after making several bloody footprints!” 12:51:32 PM 10/27/04 “"3rd floor of a four story brownstone." probably closer to 50ft than 30ft. I would feel a lot safer rapelling than trying to descend hand over hand that distance. probably got one of those cute little wrought iron picket fences at the bottom to impale you if you fall too.” 1:26:26 PM 10/27/04
