I joined the Triple A last night

My gas gauge does not work, so I ran out of gas last night (the third time this has happened with this vehicle - far more than all my other junkers combined), and could not find a station to bring gas out to me. So I ended up joining the Triple A for $54. It would have cost about $30 to have somebody bring gas to me anyway, so one more time running out of gas in the next year and I'll be ahead of the game. I guess there's something positive about screwing up and still coming out ahead.

Do you have a trip odometer on this vehicle, Ghoulbeet?

AAA is great.

Now, practice saying, My name is George and I am a gas-a-holic!

Indeed, yes, but apparently I forgot to reset it after the last time I tanked up and made a mental note to get gas earlier than normal, but forgot my mental note. Doh!

Ghoul-- AAA is awesome-- you can get a gazillion brochures and maps for trips and stuff-- Thinkbubelz & I probably get at least 3 times the cost in maps from them every year!

They will even map out your routes for road trips in a "triptik"-- where it indicates the route and all of the gas stations, food, rest areas and construction blockages along the route you will be taking...

Well worth the money--I usually get my money's worth out of the snow towing every year!

The gas gauge in my 96 Chevy pickup has always been a pain. It shows a full tank untill about a third of the tank is gone, then drops like a rock as the rest of the 26 gal tank is used.
The biggest thing is when it's on E you are walking! Most gauges will allow you to go a little bit below E before running out of gas.
This bassturd of a gauge is damn accurate at E. It put me to walking one time. LOL

In my Dodge Dakota, the gas gauge is not very accurate. When it reads one-half tank, it's really at about one-third. It then drops swiftly until it gets to one-eighth tank, at which time it turns on lights and beeps until I fill the tank again.

Additional note re: maps and triptiks - you can order maps online (they will mail them to you for free!), and I think you can do the triptiks online and just print them out yourself!

They will also usually handle car registration, sales, international driving permits, etc. Plus, lots of discounts for things like Disneyland, etc.

I had AAA+ for years due to bping in remote places and bad experiences. The tow mileage limit is 100 miles I think.

Now I have GEICO Road Service....same deal for a lot less.

AAA is a good deal, I've had it for years. First time I used it was - yup - gas. New (to me) car, and like SS's truck when it said E it meant E. Learned that at the end of the first tank.

My wife's minivan has a bad sender and after you get below 1/8 of a tank it shoots way back up past F. She does the odometer thing and so far hasn't forgotten to reset it. Yet.

I have never run out of gas. Doesn't mean I never will, but we now try to keep our tanks no lower than half empty. In '89, when the 'quake hit here, all of the gas stations were shut down because the power was out (and I was running on fumes!). So for the purpose of emergency exits outta town, we figure we can always muster one full tank from our 2 cars - that should get us to some civilized place if disaster strikes.

Sounds like Geo needs to join AARP as well.

AAA is a good deal.
On a Scout trip up to the Adirondaks the van we were travelling in ran out of gas on the thruway at about 1am.

A passing car saw us stopped and called the police. First question "is anyone here a AA member?"

Not my van, I was not driving, but I was a AAA member in the car. We got gas, ... free.

AAA is good when A person in AA drives into A cement wall causing A lot of damage. AAA will tow the car and possibly drop off A person at AA on the way.

It’s so funny that Geo posted this about 10 hours before my wife called me up in a panic. While my oldest daughter was in dance class, my wife sat in the car and listened to the radio and it wouldn’t start. I told her to call AAA. They had someone there in about 10 minutes.

The mechanic told her the battery was fine and she didn’t need to replace it. She was barely able to start it today and it wanted to stall whenever she stopped. Triple A is replacing the battery now - we pay for the battery - labor (including driving to her job) is on AAA.

I figure we’ve already paid for the membership.

I guess there are ways to make it pay for itself. Heck, I'm halfway there already.

Shoot, it just dawned on me; I can cancel out the towing and road service on my insurance policy. I never used either anyway.
