We started at the Glacier Gorge Trailhead which is at an elevation of 9240' and we hiked 2.8 miles to Mills Lake at an elevation of 9940' and then same for return trip....

The winds were pretty bad and whenever they would whip up you would have to stop and brace yourself...

I spotted Glacier Gorge when I first started looking at the maps and such. The guide book talks pretty well about it as well.

The Great Migration?
That would be so cool, but for now, I'm stuck in New Jersey. But I definitely want out, and who knows? Maybe someday...

Roam, do you fish? The spot Birch and I honeymooned had a little glacier lake that was almost overflowing with big fat trout. We never saw anyone for three days, until we started down the mountain. It was gorgeous!

Sass, I've done the kind of fishing with worms and bobbers, but never with fly gear or anything like that (another thing to look into :) )

Adv, nope not yet, we could check that out this weekend?

Rockslide closes I-70
Van-sized boulders punch holes in road, ruin travelers' plans

By Gwen Florio And Hector Gutierrez, Rocky Mountain News
November 26, 2004

GLENWOOD SPRINGS - A massive rockslide closed 24 miles of Interstate 70 between Gypsum and Glenwood Springs on Thursday, forcing motorists to drive as much as 220 miles out of their way if they wanted to get to their Thanksgiving dinners, long holiday weekends or even their jobs.

Boulders the size of vans tumbled onto an elevated section of the highway, gouging holes 6 feet deep, flattening guardrails and demolishing wall panels, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Re the I--70 Slide
No one was on the highway when the mountain came down, very lucky.

I heard this am on the radio that the road is at least partly open both ways, but work continues.

Welcome
Hey Roam, welcome to Colorado! I can tell you are loving it already, huh? :)

I've been here (in Denver) for about 14 years now, and have loved every minute of it. So much , so close. And if Snowpeak ever gives you advice on where to go hiking, listen to her. She knows what she's talking about. Hi Snowpeak!

I haven't posted here on TT for a long time it seems. I used to frequent this site about 3-4 years ago (hi Lizs), but mainly just been lurking lately. I'll have to try and keep up a little more from now on.

Enjoy the Colorado winter!

Here's a little inspiration for you to head up into RMNP this winter. Hallett Peak from Dream Lake:

Roam, people that live in weather that is sometimes cold buy clothes that keep them warm enough to go from their car into a store especially if they don't do outside sports. If you want to enjoy the outdoors, you have to buy clothes that will keep you warm for hours outside.

Spend the money and buy the right gear. Try and buy fleece, and wick items with a breathable, waterproof jacket with a hat. A hat will keep you so warm, plus good outdoor gloves. Sealskin gloves are great, waterproof and slim, so you can pick things up like you are not wearing gloves.

Remember the hiker's moto, "cotton kills". When you perspire wearing cotton, it never dries, and you get real cold. You will run down the mountain you climbed just to change your clothes and ruin your hike.

Went up to Lory St Park just out of Fort Collins with the Adventurists today. Had a nice hike in the cold air. Started snowing just as we got back to the cars.
