Has anyone hiked this area lately since the hurricane flooding/rock/mud slides ? If so how are the trails?

gorge
Suggest Yahoo groups, specifically Linville Gorge group. Moderator is Bob Underwood from Greensboro. Also look at the NC USFS web page. All the gorge trails may be closed? For how long? Remember to get a ticket you have to be caught!

Trail and road conditions
http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/press/storm.htm

...For Linville Gorge Wilderness: No camping permits will be issued until further notice. This means no overnight camping is allowed in the Gorge. Trail assessments are finding a large number of trees blown down and in some places where the trail is completely washed away. The public is NOT encouraged to use any of the trails in the Gorge at this time.

...

Two short sections of the Parkway remain closed: Milepost 317-325 south of Linville Falls, and Milepost 344-355, north of Mount Mitchell.

Bears keeping an eye on. Hopefully the trails you want to use will be OK Spam.

We're going to be in the Boone area in a few weeks. We may swing by Linville while we're up there and check things out. If we do, I'll let you know.

Change of plans
My son has a school "thing" on Saturday that I don't want to miss. Looks like I won't be heading up there this weekend after all. I still want to head up to the Boone area soon though, so I'll send you an email if I do.

TRIP CANCELLED!!!
I spoke wiyh Forestry and Parkway Offficials this morning and sure enough the Linville Gorge Trail is mostly gone due to the flooding that Hurricane Francis brought to that region. The rock wall on the south side of the falls was washed away after almost 50 years. The visitors center on the Blueridge Parkway side of the falls was flooded and received significant damage also. In addition to the Linville Gorge, the Wilson Creek/Lost Cove area also has sections that are closed. The officials that I spoke with say that it might be years before this area is opened to the public again.Gosh what a terrible loss. I will miss this area and look forward to returning when it is reopened.

Baume I am seriously considering the Blair Witch Trip in Burkittsville, MD. There's 13 people signed up and I've never met any of them. Iffin you wanted to go maybe I could pick you up in route. Let me know.

Wow, that sucks about the Linville Gorge. Ivan managed to destroy the Dunnfield Creek Trail here in NW New Jersey, a very scenic dayhiking area, this past fall. Hopefully the trail conference will rebuild it sometime soon. Also, the Catskills and Adirondacks in NY still sport the severe damage left behind by Floyd 5 years ago.

Anyway, I'm not signed up on the MD trip yet, but it's on my radar. Maybe I'll see y'all there...

I checked on Yahoo maps and according to them it will take me around 7 hours to get there. I will be doing most of the trip on I-81. Baume66 I could meet you somewhere on 81?

Baume, there is a trip just a little further south on the Black Mountain Crest Trail (Crest of the Blacks). It's probably less than an hour from Linville Gorge and the guys going on that trip are all good guys.

Closures
According to FS website the only trails in the gorge that are closed are Sandy Flats and Conley Cove? Travel is discouraged, which means, GO GO GO. Not sure about camping, but Ranger Rick has to catch you! Enjoy.
