What's the 411?
I saw a bit of the story about Colorado may be going to a system where their electoral votes would be split based on the amount of popular votes each candidate gets. On the surface this sounds pretty cool but I’m wondering what the negatives could be. Does anyone know more about this or have any opinions on it? They were saying that if this election is super close the Colorado supreme court could end up deciding who gets the election.

Their proposed electoral splitting system is up for referendum this election. It would not apply until the next one.

My understanding is that the referendum is worded so that it would apply to this election. My understanding is also that it doesn't have nearly enough support to pass.

There are other states (only a few) that do this but I can't remember wich ones. It seems to work for them and I really can't see a problem with it.

I think Maine uses a split elector system.

Nebraska also splits.

So if all states adopted this, the Prez would be by popular vote and the Electoral College would be irrelevant.

Bison is correct. It would take effect immediately.

Not at all Manuka, the smaller states would still have more electoral power in relation to the larger states.

Colorado is setting themselves up for a spate of lawsuits; there are already allegations of voter fraud. The election rules are overly-complicated and confusing. They're bracing themselves for a Florida-style legal mess.

For the people that say that teh electorial college is broke, I would offer that this split system would be a great solution, on the surface at least.

The latest Zogby tracking poll has Kerry leading Bush in CO outside of the margin of error.

I think trying to make it retro to this election is a scandal waiting to happen. Are there major drawbacks to a system like this? I would think this type of system would make for a more accurate reflection of the people’s will in addition to making them work harder for their votes rather than coddling the battleground states.

Stay on topic V. This is about Colorado's system, not your lust for Kerry.

If the electoral votes are going to be split according to the popular vote I don't see the point of the electoral college any more.

Whenever I see things like "retro-active" and it ain't in a paycheck, it usally aint a good thing.

Bottom line: The Constitution leaves these issues to the states.

"If the electoral votes are going to be split according to the popular vote I don't see the point of the electoral college any more...."

Well, because it would still serve as a "check" in the system.

times change and you have to move forward. The fiasco in Florida proved that.

I see nothing wrong with splitting the EC.
I would hate to lose a state by one vote and not get anything out of it.
