"Liberalism is trust of the people tempered by prudence. Conservatism is distrust of the people tempered by fear."
~William E. Gladstone, 1866

"What does labor want?
We want more schoolhouses and less jails;
more books and less arsenals;
more learning and less vice;
more leisure and less greed;
more justice and less revenge;
in fact, more of the opportunities
to cultivate our better natures,
to make manhood more noble,
womanhood more beautiful,
and childhood more happy and bright."

~ Samuel Gompers

"A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs who, however, has never learned how to walk forward."
~Franklin D. Roosevelt, radio speech, 26 October 1939

"The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness."
~John Kenneth Galbraith

"The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn. The Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work and then they get elected and prove it."
~P.J. O'Rourke

"Mankind will never see an end of trouble until... lovers of wisdom come to hold political power, or the holders of power... become lovers of wisdom."
~Plato, The Republic

"In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." ~H.L. Mencken

"Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives."
~John Stuard Mill

"Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote."
~George Jean Nathan

~Author Unknown

"I'm not a leftist; I'm where the righteous ought to be."
~M.M. Coady

Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all. Religion and morality enjoin this conduct. And can it be that good policy does not equally enjoin it? It will be worthy of a free, enlightened, and at no distant period a great nation to give to mankind the magnanimous and too novel example of a people always guided by an exalted justice and benevolence. Who can doubt that in the course of time and things the fruits of such a plan would richly repay any temporary advantages which might be lost by a steady adherence to it? Can it be that Providence has not connected the permanent felicity of a nation with its virtue? The experiment, at least, is recommended by every sentiment which ennobles human nature. Alas! is it rendered impossible by its vices?

George Washington's farewell address (I was just reading it - its a great speech:

“I know that a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, of undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without international support will fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than the best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al Qaeda. I'm not opposed to all wars. I'm opposed to dumb wars.”

Barak Obama, 2002

will fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than the best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al Qaeda

He left out the end result: jihadist terrorists slaughtered by the bushel in Iraq, resulting in a huge loss of face in the muslim world. AQ prime still ineffective. Muslims still outraged over AQ/jihadists-on-muslim abuse.

I know that a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, of undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences.

This applies to pretty much any war.

it's easy to TALK against something when you have no power to actually DO something...had he been a senator at the time i'm sure he would have voted right along with all his other colleagues

Ummm, noooooo...I haven't heard anyone say anything about people not voting for Obama being racists. This is like a bad game of telephone. Six posts down and Spirit can't keep up.

are automatically called racist?

You know why? It's because Obama is a racist, and particularly his wife and pastor. They are projecting.

There are some who are simply racist, .... some not.... and some in that hazy in-between.

The Klan and the Wingnuts are like that thing with squares and rectangles..... 'every square a rectangle but not every rectangle a square,' donchaknow.

But it's the 'in-between' that I find interesting.... and those little slips revealing that which was hidden, hidden even from the people themselves.
