I need suggestions on a new rain coat. I would like it to be lightweight and packable. also i would like to be able to wear layers under it. I've been looking at the precip but am not sure if i like it. any help is much appreciated.

I have a Precip and REI Elements jacket (I forget the name at the moment). Both are waterproof and somewhat breathable. The Marmot is several ounces lighter, but the REI seems to do a better job blocking the wind. What about the Precip do you think you won't like?

I can't remember which thread or who said it, but I read that the benefit of a waterproof jacket is its ability to keep your body from direct contact with cold rain. Even if it doesn't breathe 100%, a jacket can reduce the risk of hypothermia. After the cold rains we've had the last few days here, I find that to be very true. My clothes might get damp from sweat, but its better than soaked from the rain.

I like my Red Ledge jacket a lot! It seems to breathe fairly well - enough that I don't get soaked in sweat - and it has generous pit zips. and a nice hood with good drawstring control over the face opening. Lightweight and very packable too.

I'll second the Red Ledge jacket.

i have an ultra light red ledge jacket and really like it. I know it's silnylon, but I really don't sweat as much in it then with my regular rain jacket.

thanks for the quick replys. I am not too sure why i am apprehensive about the precip. it just doesnt seem to be made that well. I dont have any prior expereince with marmot so that could be a problem as well. I know their stuff is rather expensive but you dont always get what you pay for. I havent looked at any redledge jackets yet. where did you folks purchase yours?

I have a lot of Marmot stuff (clothes, a tent, a pack), and its all been great.

The Precip certainly isn't a heavy-duty jacket. I wouldn't use it for off-trail stuff at all, but it is relatively breathable and certainly lightweight.

Several places are closing out the previous generation of Precips for around $70. Last I knew, REI's outlet page had them.
