This is a new direction for America.

We are not divided.

America is the world's only Super Power. Daschle has been defeated. The wicked witch is dead. Democrats are welcome on the freedom train. Freedom for all Americans, Done! Freedom for the rest of the world.

Let's do it!

Mandate

I don’t think it’s an “bitterly divided country” when:

1. The Republican president just won over 50 percent for the first time in 16 years. He won more raw votes than anyone ever has, including Reagan.

2. The GOP has 55 senators.

3. The GOP has over 230 House members.

4. There are at least 28 Republican governors, including those of the 4 largest states.

5. The majority of state legislators and legislatures are Republican.

6. The GOP has just performed miracles, like ousting a Senate caucus leader for the first time since 1952, and getting a Republican senator elected from Louisiana for the first time ever

TDale's list of accomplishments were made despite the overwhelming opposition from the leftist media, and despite the Democrats raising a record amount of money. This is the first time since the 1930's that the Republicans made gains in the house for six elections in a row. I agree, that is SOME mandate.

Bush's Victory Sparks Protest
Wednesday, November 03, 2004

PORTLAND, Ore. — Protesters took to the streets of Portland on Wednesday, calling for an end to the Iraq war and greater scrutiny of President Bush's (search) re-election victory.

The demonstrators, who numbered more than 100, were met by police in riot gear and on horseback. At least five people were arrested, but there were no reports of injuries. Police squirted some demonstrators with what appeared to be pepper spray.

The protesters chanted "Not our president, not our war," and sought an investigation into Bush's victory over Democrat John Kerry (search).

"I want to see democracy in America," said Cyrus Smith, 24. "I want all the votes scrutinized."

Others just wanted to let Bush know that they wouldn't quietly accept his policies.

"I'm not trying to challenge the vote — it's keeping things alive," said Jeremy Lambshead, 23.

"We're still here," he added. "You may have won the White House, you may have won the House, you may have won the Senate, but we're still here."

As police arrested one man, protesters yelled, "Police go home." One held a sign reading: "Let's do what Kerry wouldn't — revolt."

Does mandate mean that Dubya will represent all the people or just those who voted for him?
MarkO

The mandate was from the American people, not the President.
bbw

That doesn't answer my question.

The mandate was from 50%+ of the American people.

Will Dubya respect the wishes of the rest of us?

"The mandate was from 50%+ of the American people"

Not a true statement! He got 50% of the vote but there are scores of teens who will be impacted by the policies of this "mandated" regime who HAD NO SAY!

That's what I'm wondering.

Will there be tyranny of the majority, or bi-partisan democracy.

Bipartisan democracy does not mean that the minority has to show servile deference to the majority.

I would like to see cooperation, not coercion.
MarkO

MarkO, there wasn't been any cooperation in the past when the Pres. was a Dem and the Rep's. controlled the House and Senate. So why should there be any now with them controlling it all.

I'd guess that stopping chants of "not my president..." would go a long way toward fostering bipartisanship.
TDale

11/04/04

You are wrong Ewker, there has been cooperation and parlimentary procedure in the U.S. Congress.....until the last four years.

TDale, dissent is an American tradition.
Maybe if this administration had shown bipartisanship in the past four years there would not be that kind of dissent.

Dubya promised moderate politics four years ago and did just the opposite.

I suppose we can expect more of the same.

And we may even see a hostile take-over of Cuba in the near future.
I hope I'm wrong.
MarkO

Marko, that chant was started four years ago. Dissent is a good thing. Disownment is abandonment of discourse. Dissapointment has been and will continue to be the disbursement for discord.

Mandate is a dangerous word and a dangerous way of thinking.

If Bush thinks he has a "mandate" then a DEM will surely win in 08 and there might even be some surprises in Congress in 06.

The mandate debate is clearly garbage. If the numbers are there, politicians use them. The Republicans have a strong margin in the Senate and a decent margin in the House. They also have the presidency and the courts.

I am hoping that the Republicans will now stop all the talk about abortion and actually ban it.

I am also hoping that the Republicans stop with all the talk about fiscal reponsibility and spend less than we take in.

I am hoping that the Republicans will let the energy companies in America make the United States independent of foreign energy sources by drilling in previously closed areas.

I also think that we should also pull out of the UN. There is no point for that organization to exist if it is simply a target to be ridiculed every election.

No excuses, boys. Do what you say.

I'd have to say that with Daschle out of the senate, bipartisan cooperation is much more likely. As long as he was minority leader, (or majority leader before that) bipartisan meant the republicans doing it his way. Now maybe there can actually be some cooperation.

We'll see. I don't think it will take long to see, either.

yeah let the goverment ban it. If you think that will stop abortions you are sadly mistaken. Women were getting abortion's way before the topic ever came up.

Lets send the women who want an abortion to a dark alley where some guy with a clothes hanger can fix them right up.

Wow, the left must be an interesting place, didn't hear quite this much wrangling when Clinton declared his mandate twice... Without getting 50%+ of the popular vote as Bush has done.
Bison

Traditionally a mandate is when one takes about 60 percent of the vote. Anything less is an election victory, but short of a mandate. Having the White House and both houses of Congress does, in a sense, constitute a mandate, but when the margins are thin it is not wise to go around crowing about a mandate.

The "stick it up your ass" attitude I'm seeing is something that will be remembered by the Dems, so it's not wise politics. It ought to occur to Republicans that they have done more over the years to make Democrats than the Democrats could do themselves, in the event the name Nixon does not ring a bell.

Ignore us. We don't mean anything. We are Democrats, and in a federal sense, we are irrelevant.

Just run the country and do a good job, okay. There will be no worries for you.

I didn't think anybody would be smart enough to get that message. Let's try another tack: in 1964, Lyndon Johnson won what was a clear landslide. Four years later, he announced that he would not run again because it was clear that he was about to lose the nomination to Bobby Kennedy. Kennedy, of course, was assassinated; Humphrey won the nomination, but lost the election to Nixon because Humphrey was associated too closely with Johnson's war.

That's what a mandate can get you. I think the applicable word is hubris.

Nobody wants to flat out ignore you RL, but what you end up seeing is the reaction to the constant stream of invective from the left. Do you really expect someone to seriously listen to your arguments when you're out constantly calling that person a dumbass or a liar?

Mandate schmandate. I have a Bush/Cheney bumper sticker on my car now and I'm being given thumbs-up signs from all the toothless white people driving SUV's and trucks and church vans. There's your mandate.

It's not like the president is going to be any less timid about tossing his weight around this term than he was last term. It's a silly argument about a "mandate". Bush is in power and the republicans control congress. If he had lost the popular vote again, it wouldn't have changed anything about how he will govern.

Trailer trash is temptingly funny, but rather unkind.

This attitude is so typically American these days.........disparaging and belittling people we don't even know.

The vile terms used to describe homosexuals by fundaMENTALists is a prime example.

.......as is my irresistible urge to type, "fundaMENTALists" in reference to ALL religious whackos, Xian, Izlamo, etc.

MarkO, I don't know if I qualify as a fundamentalist or not, probably do by your definition. What vile term are you referring to? I find that I rarely use any term except maybe Tom or Fred or Mary or Mr. On the rare occasion that I find some reason that I need to refer to their sexuality I use the term homosexual or gay (not very often). Most all the people I know use the same terms.
