March 22 (Bloomberg) -- Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards will make an announcement today with his wife Elizabeth, a breast cancer survivor. They will discuss her health, the Associated Press reported, citing the Edwards campaign.

The press conference will be held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at noon today, according to a statement from Edwards' campaign for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

Campaign spokeswoman Andrea Purse declined to comment to Bloomberg News on the topic of the briefing.

John Edwards scrapped an appearance March 20 in Indianola, Iowa, to attend a doctor's appointment yesterday with his wife, AP said. Elizabeth Edwards had a test on March 19 and a follow- up appointment yesterday, the AP said, citing the Edwards campaign.

Elizabeth Edwards was diagnosed with breast cancer the day after the 2004 presidential election, according to his campaign Web site.

Edwards to Stay in Race as Wife Faces Cancer Return (Update1)

March 22 (Bloomberg) -- Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards said he will continue his presidential campaign while his wife, Elizabeth, battles a recurrence of cancer.

``The campaign goes on, the campaign goes on strongly,'' Edwards, a Democrat, said at a news conference today in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. ``We have no intention of cowering in the corner.''

The breast cancer that was diagnosed in Elizabeth Edwards in 2004 has spread to her bones, and is treatable even though it is incurable, John Edwards said.

``The bottom line is her cancer's back,'' he said. ``We are very optimistic about this because having been through some struggles in the past, we know the key is to keep your head up and keep moving and be strong.''

Elizabeth Edwards, 57, said she is suffering no symptoms and will still make appearances in support of her husband's campaign as she is treated for the disease.

``One of the reasons it's important from my perspective to move forward with this is that I'm immensely proud of his campaign,'' she said. It's important to give ``the American people the opportunity to have a president like him.''

Her doctor, Lisa Carey, said at the press conference that some people can live for many years with Stage 4 breast cancer.

``Unfortunately we won't know until we give therapy how hers will go,'' she said.

"I hope she makes a full recovery.”

She has metastatic breast cancer. Unfortunately it is incurable. Only hope for salvage Rx. Composite five year survival is 15-20% but each patient is different, hence response different.

There are certainly some very long term remissions - some live long lives cancer free after metastasis and there are new developments in treatment and possible cure. I share SS's hope.

This looks like a good site:

You know I just saw my Onco on the news with a patient. he was the first bone marrow transplant patient at Georgetown Lombardi Cancer Institute. He was talking about how the doctors were reading from a manual during the procedure. he was given a 10-15% chance of survival after 5 years.

That was 25yrs ago.

Never give up.

We hear almost each week of a new cancer therapy being developed so it's crazy to give up. Even if things seem really bad, they don't always turn out as bad as you think they will.
