Hmm, looked at the dates and that was impossible. It was this Christmas special that we couldn't watch.

There is a virtual reality scene in this Christmas show where grandpa Chewbacca his "virtual sex" with some new-age singer lady.

They couldn't have made this any worse. It's like nails on a chalkboard.

You know, the included commercials are worse than the actual movie. Ah heck, the whole thing is cringe-worthy.

Ok nerds ...

What do you think? I am undecided on this.

Does a director, who creates a phenomena such as Star Wars, have an obligation to stick to the formula and cater to the fanbase?

From a historical perspective, I'm wondering if George Lucas ruined something that he created, yet was more than him.
HighPlainsDrifter

he doesnt have to cater to the fanbase, but he does have an obligation to make something that is not a complete fvcking hot mess. he does have an obligation to create characters i give two shts about and a storyline that is coherent and engaging. sure as hell didnt get that from the prequels

good point - agreed - I appreciate how you differentiate between catering to the fanbase and making something that we care about

one thing that guy from your video mentions is that we dont know who the hell the main character of the phantom menace is. is it anakin? he doesnt appear until 45 minutes into the movie.

now, one can argue that you shouldnt look at just the phantom menace, but all 3 prequels as 1 storyline. then it becomes clear that anakin is the main character. ok, fine. but give me a character i want to root for, not hate. anakin is such a whiny, spoiled sht. the acting from all parties involved throughout the whole trilogy has been so wooden. there have been zero moments that make me care that by the time obi-wan leaves anakin for dead, im thinking "good. it's about time"

thats no way to create a story. if your main character is going to be a tragic character, then you should care about him immensely, not be relieved at his death.

my synopsis of why the prequels flopped (throw in there EP 6 too), is that originally Star Wars was a movie that made adults feel like they were 5 again. The films that followed were written FOR 5 year olds. I think that's where Lucas dropped the ball, he failed to recognize the distinction.

Did he do a good job of writing for 5 year olds? As the dude points out, no. But that was obviously his intent.

yea, because stories about tax disputes and trade blockades where the main character kills children is such a good children's story

And why do they have to make EVERYTHING 3D? Especially for little kids' movies...they never want to wear the glasses for the whole time.
