I didn't address "direction".

I addressed influence over voters in primaries. There is a difference.

More specifically, the Democratic party, for example, is too "left" for it's non-base voters. If their base (the far lefties) get their way, the rest of the party (the bulk of non-primary voters) will be disillusioned. Same w/ the Republicans, except in reverse.

Bottom line is it comes down to getting the best (overall influential) candidate elected in the primaries. Mess up there and you're screwed. The way to mess it up is to let the "base" of either party get their way. Whichever base gets their way the most, loses this next election.
