Early Leonids?View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 5 of 5 messages posted.
“EARLY LEONIDS? The annual Leonid meteor shower normally peaks around the 19th of November. This year, however, there might be an extra, early peak on Nov. 8th (MONDAY PM) when Earth passes close to a 1000-year-old stream of dust from Comet Tempel-Tuttle. The precise location of this old stream is uncertain. Forecasters estimate, tentatively, a meteor rate of 50 to 100 per hour--much less than the great Leonid displays of recent years, but still pleasing. Sky watchers in parts of Europe, Africa and Asia are best-positioned to see the Nov. 8th display--if it happens! Is the star-gazing party at your house this year??” 7:11:29 AM 11/08/04 “Well this explains the shooting stars I saw amidst the Northern Lights last night!” 12:11:59 PM 11/08/04 “Too many damn streetlights in this neighborhood, TD! I'm heading out to the reservoir about sunset -- Leo doesn't rise 'til around 11 pm. I need an interpreter! I clicked on the links, and they're talking a language that's foreign to me. Is this the bottom line? Go outside on the 8th (oops, too late) and the 19th, and look up at the night sky? Is this when the streams will occur? Or, are there meteor showers in between those dates, too? One site said that Africa, Asia, and ____ are best for the Nov 8 display. Is that likewise for Nov 19?” 3:35:29 PM 11/09/04
