Rock On Stu. I'll likely miss the show what with all that I've got planned to do tomorrow - wish it was on a trail somewhere, but that'll happen in its own time.

There was a Doctor Who episode where amplified rock music was used as a lethal weapon, sort of the sonic equivalent of a laser beam.

From the Jethro Tull website!
David Palmer Changes Gender - Now Dee Palmer

Legendary former Tull orchestral leader and keyboardist David Palmer is now a woman. As quoted in The Daily Mirror, David (now Dee) states “I want to be judged on my musical ability alone, and nothing else." She is working on a solo album.

Ian released this press statement, quoted here from Scotsman.com.

"I have known for the past two years of David Palmer’s intention to undergo gender-changing procedures and, like many other people who have known David for three decades as a bearded, pipe-smoking man’s man, I found it difficult to understand at first,” he said.

“But I fully support his decision to undertake a new life as a woman.

“To the many fans of Jethro Tull, I can only offer that they should accept Dee Palmer for her new persona and hope that they enjoy her musical activities in the future.”

Bob Marley?
Oh you freak!!

My 20-year old boy has filled me in on quite a bit of rock and roll history that I never knew.

After turning him on to my LP collection about six years ago, I have created a monster.

According to what Henry found out Jethro Tull's first album, THIS WAS-1968, was produced for a sum of about 2,500 pounds that the band was able to scrounge up.

They had been told that flute and guitar would not fly and the rest is history.

That album is a bit jazzy and, though flute and guitar is not an original concept, it certainly was to the rock and roll kids of the '60s.

On that first album Mick Abrahms was the guitarist and his playing is some of my favorite stuff.........kinda laid-back and not as edgy as Martin Barre, who really knows how to smoke it.

The flute was used by two bands back then, Jethro Tull and the Moody Blues.

Both were big favs of mine..

Does anybody else have threads that come up over and over again but for some reason they just don't click on them? That was the case for me and this tread. I've seen this tread dozens, if not hundreds of times but for some reason I never clicked on it.

This is a great station! I hope I'll have a chance to hear your show Tree. Do you do the "DJ Thang" or do you just play music? I've been listening for about 29 minutes now and I don't think I've heard anybody talk.

Hey Thrifty! I do the Underground Railroad, from 3 to 6 PM on Saturday afternoons (although there's a 90% chance I won't be in this coming weekend). It's a truly eclectic format that provides an alternative to commercial radio, much in the way that certain public radio and satellite formats will. But, it does have its own identity. It's comprised of about 40 to 50 DJ's that provide their own unique programming. The person on now may just be someone who plays long sets. I try to keep focused on the music, but I do cut in frequently, because that's just the way my show is structured. I dig into the WHOLE spectrum of classic rock, not just the select, repititious format that you will find on your average classic rocker. I also try to shy away from what you can hear everyday on commercial radio. I hope you get the inclination to join us. It's a fun time for me. I look forward to it. And, the repsonse here has been consistently good...

i do enjoy this kind of format...one of the only stations i listen to here in indy is an independent 92.3 WTTS...they just recently started streaming...they also just added a cool feature to their site, they list every song and artist that they played for the last 24 hours

WTMD 89.7 If You're In Baltimore
I was there for a couple of hours last Saturday and stumped the Tree with an artist from the '60s named Terry Reid.
Tree played the song Super Lungs My Super Girl from the album Super Lungs, @1969.......a great '60s sound!!

Terry was a teenage prodigy and singing sensation in England and admired Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett.
He was one of the "Blue-Eyed Soul" kids from England like Rod Stewart with a raspy and emotive style like the soul men mentioned above.
Terry played guitar as well and some piano.
Jimmy Page offered him the job of singer with his new creation, Led Zeppelin, but Terry turned him down because he had a tour booked in the states.
Jimmy Page couldn't wait for Terry so he hired Robert Plant and the rest is rock and roll history.

Last week I happened to spot Terry Reid's re-released(2005) album in the FREE box in the hall outside of my university's radio station(I love college radio!!) and I remembered that great song and snatched it.

For any who\'s tried tuning in lately...
The Underground Railroad is in the midst of a three week hiatus. This past Saturday, I had a family event to attend. This Saturday, we are airing a live all-day broadcast of several Jersey area bands. So, the regularly scheduled programs are being bumped. And next Saturday, Maple and I are going to be in the Pine Barrens representing the station at a kayaking/concert type event, complete with Friday to Saturday over night campout. The UR returns on May 20th to its regularly scheduled time slot...

Well, for lack of a better way to put it...

It's one of those outdoor, all-day festival events with kayaking and other activities as part of the fare. I don't think we are going to be able to broadcvast it because of problems with internet hook-up. But, Mapes is looking forward to a couple of days on the water and enjoying some good music as a side dish...
