that's a real good question Y2.
I must say, I have never.

I had experiences away from home though, where it may would've been a good idea to have a gun. I have a conceiled weapons license, I still don't carry it with me though. Too much bulk, to much of a pain. At least for me.

I've never had a single intruder. All the guns in my house are for hunting, except one, which is a 22 riffle for target shooting. Guns and ammo are stored separately.

I had someone try to break into my apartment in Albuquerque while I was home. I didn't have a gun at the time, and probably wouldn't have thought of getting it before scaring the guy off. Y2, your point is well taken from my perspective.

I've never known anyone who was in a situation at home who would have been well served by a loaded firearm. Burglaries generally happen while you're not there, and you're more likely to be assaulted or otherwise attacked outside your home.

I keep the Louisville Slugger under the bed. The wife has got a hell of control with throwing knives. 2 years at culinary school.

How about an aggressive stray dog in the
house? It came in through the garage while
we were bringing groceries into the kitchen
from our suv parked in the garage. It was
nice weather. We had not closed the outside
garage door. Animal control picked up the
remains and had a lab test run on it. It
proved to be rabid. We were lucky no one
suffered a bite. We had been warned to be extra careful in our clean up of the room.
No problems arose.

What you need Gemini... is a KelTec P32.

That's what I carry 99% of the time. It's so small and easy to carry it's almost a shame not to carry it. ~$240ish most places.

deoreDX. that beats my berretta in size. I was thinking about a smaller gun already, but not sure if it's even worth it. I mean... you can't carry it out of state anyway. (unless it's in your car)
That's the reason why I didn't buy a smaller one yet. We'll see.

treebeard, instead of just looking to jump on any statement I make, take a look at Stovestompers statement. He said he keeps a gun loaded by his bedside. I did not tell him to do so.

But that you for being so attentive to my posts!

And did you not say that it would be in his best interest to keep a loaded gun around? This shows to me that you adhere to that line of thinking. I think that is stating exactly to what you said, to the letter. I just simply said that there are alternatives. I wasn't specifically referring to Stovie in my comment. Simply stating alternatives by using an example.

LH, why don't you take a stab at Y2's question? It was a good one...

treebeard, this was your exact statement:

What if he were a person that doesn't like the idea of keeping a loaded gun around. (in regard to Stovestomper)

*You said this because you thought I TOLD stovestomper to keep his gun by his bedstand, which I DID NOT.

Why can't you just admit you were wrong?

As to Y2's questions, I have no idea how many people have used their guns to protect themselves against intruders. I'm not saying people should or should not have guns for self protection. I believe it's a personal choice.

Well of course it is lipstick. I keep getting told it's in the constitution, and how responsible everyone is with their guns. But it seems that even responsible people let their guard down once in a while.
What a gun offers for most is not real protection, as it'll likely never be used for the reson it was bought, but simply peace of mind. "I could do something if someone broke in," seems to be the sentiment. And I'm sure there are cases where they've saved people's lives. But there are also countless accidents. What's the statistic, that a gun is more lilely to be used to kill you or someone you know than used to kill an intruder? I guess that includes domestic incidents, where the gun owner or a member of his family decides he'd like to shoot somebody, but it also includes countless accidents.

Still, as you say, it's your choice - I just question the logic for most people who live in safe places. I mean if I lived in the middle of the wilds I'd get a shotgun I think, but for the vast majority living in what are mostly low-crime areas I think the "risks" (and they are risks, you simply reduce them by being "responsible") outweigh that sense of security that a gun provides.

Y2, you are totally right about it giving some people peace of mind, like when hikers carry bear spray. Has anyone hear ever used it that carried it?

Guns can be a problem if they are in homes with people that get angry enough to use them if they are emotional or drunk etc. I guess that's part of the downside, but also everyone cannot be punished for the mistakes of others by not being allowed to own guns responsibly.

Some people like guns for target practice, and not to necessarily protect their homes or it can be a combination of the both.
I live in a great neighborhood, but recently there was a rash of home invasions not far away. There were also men knocking on doors, and if you did not answer, they would break in. So bad things can happen in good neighborhoods. Again, what's the percentage????

My dad lives in a small town. He has a small hand gun and labels on the front and back doors "Protected by Smith and Wesson." (sp?) The back door is always unlocked unless they go out of town on a long trip. Really.

I've made a decision to better secure my firearms even though I don't have children, just because children do occasionally visit my house.”
its tempting to shoot the little bastards, innit?
