Happy birthday, dude! I'll go run one for you today. I'll run, let's see, how 'bout a furlong for every year of your age? So that would be about 7 miles? Right?

Hey thanks everybody!Yeah next year's the big one where I move into a new age group.
And, speaking of Newgirl, I can't remember where I left her! I'll have to open a new investigation.

Lyra, I got you a monkey maid service for the day! It also comes with a pedicure and massage.

You're welcome. Here's some more.

Case #97-5 :

Bruce Remick provides our next Kaper....."Today on the Turner Classic Movies(TCM) cable channel, I was watching one of those patriotic short subjects from the early 1940's. It was called Main Street Story, or something like that, and described how military trainees had to use improvised materials for training. It showed wooden dowels used for simulating mortar rounds, and BEER CANS for artillery rounds.

The unusual thing about this is that the beer cans were all Adelphi Lager Beer. There was a stack of a dozen or more of these beauties shown "at the ready", and the detail was such that the stack filled the whole TV screen. A long-opener panel was visible on one of the cans. The stack of cans was shown twice.

The mystery here is that there is no such brand listed in the BCU, Class Book, or Bible. Certainly some expert out there can shed some light on this. The cans may have been California cans, since the film was produced in Hollywood. I doubt they were "dummy" brands, because there was no attempt to hide dozens of brand advertisements in the film."

ANSWER:
Chris Taylor, #29470, replies.... I saw this on the History Channel...The upside down can with the opening instruction appears to be a common Pabst Blue Ribbon Export side panel. The rest of the cans would probably be mock ups for the camera (possibly ADOLPH'S Lager) as many jabs at the Axis Powers were written on bombs and such in these propaganda war films. Also in this same film, a Kruger OI with the "K" man is briefly seen being loaded into a mortar, then the "ADELPHI" can is shown in a close up shot (as in photo).

Cool, a beer with some history! No pull tabs on those! Hmmm, shooting beer cans out of a mortar....sounds like a fun birthday activity. I really liked that Korner Kapers beer site, NS. Thanks!

I'm having a nice pint of Guinness tonight at Pug's!

You picked a good one.
Originally I was going to send you one of those. But the best pictures had those copywrite statements nearby. Menominee Silver Cream Beer was great. I had a cousin living in Menominee, MI, along Lake Michigan across a river from Marinette, WI. Besides some family vacations there, I was able to visit ocassionally from college('50-'54). We did consume a number of cans or bottles of Menominee Silver Cream.

BTW, Menominee, Michigan, should not be confused with Menomonie, Wisconsin, which is across the state not far from the Minneapolis/St. Paul/White Bear Lake area of Minnesota.

Enjoy your birthday.
