An Extravaganza of Sorts...
This one's for all the peak-bagging enthusiasts on this board, especially ones into the 50-state high points thing, and ones who may not live within weekend-driving-distance of the Northeast.

The Idea: Next summer, in the course of 1 week (7 days or so), tag the High Points of 7-8 different Northeastern States. A possible itenerary would be as follows:

Day 1: High Point (NJ), Mt Frissle (CT), and Mt Greylock (MA)

Days 2-3: Mt Marcy (NY)

Day 4: Mt Mansfield (VT)

Day 5: Mt Washington (NH)

Days 6-7: Mt Katahdin (ME)

Finally, if this is planned around one of the "allowed" days, we can tag Jerimoth Hill (RI) on the way back. However, it is on private property, and they only allow easements on select days out of the year.

I would imagine this would have to be done in June or July to maximize available daylight.

That being said, who would be interested, any part(s) of or even all of such a trip?

this trip has my attention. very good idea. Many logistics though. Reminds me of the book, "to the top".

Of course, this would involve spending a significant amount of time on the road, as the various high points are bit too far apart to hike within a week.

Naturally, as a reasult, many of the ensuing overnights would be car-camping at or close to the trailheads.

reading the book To the Top would be excellent preparation for such an undertaking/adventure. That is the kinda of stuff those two dudes did.

July is possible. If we wanted to do RI, the place is open on 3 Jul (or whatever that Sunday of the 4th of July weekend is), I believe from 8 AM to 5 PM (EDT). Otherwise, whenever...

Well, I think it will ultimately depend on whether we want to complete New England can capture Jerimoth Hill in Rhode Island on the way back. It is on private land and has a very restrictive easement schedule. I don't know what it is for 2005 yet, but for 2004 it was as follows:

Sun 15 Feb (Presidents' Day Weekend) 8A-5P EST
Sun 30 May (Memorial Day Weekend) 8A-5P EDT
Sat 3 Jul (Independence Day Weekend) 8A-5P EDT
Sun 5 Sep (Labor Day Weekend) 8A-5P EDT
Sat 13 Nov (Replaces usual Columbus Day) 8A-5P EST

To end the trip bagging Rhode Island, we'd have to end the trip on one of those "allowed" days. Or, if we want to ditch Rhode Island, we can go whenever. June or July would be my suggestion to maximize daylight.

I haven't decided on exact dates, as I wanted to see what kind of interest is out there. I wasn't going to take a whole week off of work to peak-bag the Northeast by myself; I can do that on weekends. Rather, this is designed with out-of-region people in mind, for a chance to pick up 7-8 state high points.

That said, all y'all local folks is invited as well, for all or any part. If it makes trip posting, it'll probably appear as a multi-trip series (one for each state)...

I'd join you for Marcy, if some of you want to hit Haystack or Skylight as well.

RI highpoint will be anti-climactic. It's a tree covered 800 foot mole hill. Definitely not a hike to remember, just a peak bag to get the RI high Point. Believe it or not, this is one of the most dangerous high points because it is on private ground. the owner has been known to shoot at people trying to reach this lofty ground. Fortunately, the highpointers club inked a deal with the owner to get easement on certain days of the year. They say the best part about hiking this high point is meeting other high pointers as it is kind of a high pointer get together since there are only 2-3 days a year where easement is allowed.

The Ct highpoint, Mt. Frizzle is not on the highest point of the mountain. The peak of the mountain actually lies in Mass. It's one of the least visited high points, but from the accounts that I have read, it is very underated and sports a good view and sub-alpine conditions. CT doesn't like to admit that Frizzle is actually the highpoint and celebrates the nearby Bear Mountain as it's highpoint. Bear Mountain is 50 feet lower than Frizzle though. For example, Frizzle has a green stake in the ground and Bear Mtn has a nice Stone tower.

mt. Greylock, the Mass highpoint is supposedly an awesome climb and sports an amazing view from it's summit. There is an auto road to the summit, however, the hike to the top is much better.

Mt. Washington, Mt Mansfield and Katadhin are all givens to be cool.
