Who has their gear list in spreadsheet form?
I'd like to see the different formats you guys have. Anyone have it set up with formulas that lets you check or sort gear and add the weights up for a current trip?

That is a sweet idea OPIE. I usually keep my lists in word.

I used to be that anal about it.
Now, I know what I need and just toss it into the pack and go.

i do.

it's nothing too special, just lists my gear and weights, then totals my baseweight, consumables and adds them up for a total.

Hello SS
I agree........
Heck isn't it fun forgetting something now and then and try to improvise on replacing or getting along without it.....Or just bumming it off someone else...

Gear list? WTF?

Just stuff all that #&%!$ in your pack. Hike 20 miles. When you get home jettison the #&%!$ you didn't use.

Repack. Go again hike 25 miles. Repeat step one.

Sooner or later you are down to the things you need.

My gear lists are on excel spreadsheets depending on the type and length of the trip, and the time of year.

I don't weigh every little thing though, so I don't have that data.

I just keep a text list and modify it a little for each trip. Add stuff or remove stuff based on the time of year, length of trip, location, etc.

LOL so do I I have mine based on season and duration. I can go through and check off the things that I want to take and it calculates the weight. It even does my food down to the coffee single.

I have my list on a SS. The main tab lists all the gear I own. I have different tabs for different type trips. It pulls in the different gear and weights and gives totals. Now I usually just print it out before a trip and use it as a checklist. Sort of a starting point.

I used a cheap diet scale from walmart that measures to the ounce for the heavy stuff, and use a hand held clip postage scale for the light stuff.
I just want to keep my list organized and it'd be neat to look at and play with.

Sacco/dayhiker..you have any of yours posted online or mind e-mailing them to opie1979@yahoo.com ?..I'm bored at work and wanna look at some..i'll check phils out later tonight..damn filters

OPIE - I'll try emailing you. I've emailed you probably a dozen times over the years and never received a reply. I've assumed that my office account and yahoo don't talk. I know I have that trouble with stikmon's email. I can email him from my free account, but not my work one.

Email sent.

I don't use a spread sheet. I do have a few lists in word. I forget stuff, so its useful to have something in writing.

Also, its great to see four gear threads at the top of TT. I think for a while, I won't post on a non-backpacking thread if I see a gear, or clearly on topic thread at the top.

OK, let's see if this will work. Click here to (hopefully) download my most current spreadsheet. I'm always changing stuff, so sometimes it's not really up to date, but whatever....

OK, just tried it; seems to work OK. This is for a 2-night winter trip, BTW, with no gear sharing....

weak pathetic humans. gotta have everything laid out in a special detailed manner. bring this, how much does that weigh...Since when do we need lists. Are we so weak that we can't carry the things that we want? silly humans you are weak and feeble and certainly not even worth our attention. You shall all be assimilated...resistence is FUTILE!

Super troll...I'm with you...

I have found that those that worry about pack weight are simply out of shape. If you worked out regularly and werein tip top fitness, then you'd be able to carry your pack without even thinking about it. load your pack up, put it on, and hit the stair master and so some pushups...get strong and forget the weight...excercise!!!!

wow. bowlderman, you put me and my pathetic little spreadsheet to shame.

i can't even look at mine anymore.
i'm now throwing it onto a floppy. then i'm gonna delete mine off my hard drive. then i'm gonna reformat my hard drive to remove all traces of the file.
i will then take the floppy, burn it and scatter the ashes over the adirondacks.

Stik,

Your theroy doesn't hold water. I check my pack weight because I want to be comfortable. I've carried 55# packs on 6 day trips before. 37# on a 9 day trip is much preferred. It doesn't have anything to do with my fitness level, I can do both. It has to do with being more comfortable. And don't think it's because opf my fitness level, I'm fitter now than when I carried heavy packs regularly.
Sassafras
10:47:43 AM

i'm with sass.

you can carry 50# for 10 miles a day or 25# and do 15 miles a day.

choice is pretty simple for me.

I have lists not for the weight, but for the stuff...lots of times I'm packing at the last minute and don't want to have to fret about forgetting something.

Plus my trips are varied...if it's backpacking, there's kids vs no kids, one night vs many, winter vs the other seasons...if it's winter, is it a sled trip, a backpack trip or a drive up cabin trip...if it's car camping, is it with or without yaks, with or without kids...and many more variations!
LOL...
I'd drive myself crazy trying to remember it all!
