I was looking for a thread on this topic, but couldn't find one. My Mom (73 y/o) fell and broke her hip early this afternoon. I've been with her in the ER a bunch, and she goes into surgery this evening. The ball that goes into the hip joint broke off, she'll get an artificial one attached. Fortunately, the hospital is right around the corner so it takes about 3 minutes to walk over there. I should probably stay off TT, because I've got a lot to catch up on - but I'll probably be here a lot... the give and take of TT is usually a stress reliever for me.

Well turn your mom on to TT. Half of us never get out of the house. She can be a twenty something newbie and talk dirty and stuff. It'll help her recovery.

Oh I am so sorry pedxing. I help an old lady once in a while because she did break her hip.

It's hard on old bones. Take good care of her.

Wow bummer. Good luck and speedy recovery. Is she suffering from sundowner's syndrome being 73? Older people do fine all day at the hospital but when the sun gopes down they can become very confused and even a bit delusional. My grandmother (80ish?) started saying how she had to go upstairs and go to bed thinking she was still at home. The evening might be a good time to be with her.

Hope all goes well Ped.

Good luck with your mom! My mom is 88...and was amazingly healthy until this year...she only quit her job at 80 because of an injury.... My granny lived to 100. Now at 88 she has been in the hospital 5 times since last Nov.....she went in this past Sat. and she got out Wed. Your mom\'s worst problem is going to be getting rest in the hospital....everything is so time dependent.......that shot must be given NOW... the meds...NOW..have lots for her to do...reading material, crosswords, etc. books on tape from the library were great...feel free to ask for suggestions...

Take heart Ped, my great aunt Sis broke her hip at age 88 trying to "catch her VW" bug as it rolled down her driveway. She's still sharp as a tack at age 92, (although she can't hear anything), but for some reason she paniced and got dragged all the way into the street. She had surgery and has recovered quite well. She still lives independantly and gets around great considering her age.

Your mom is in my prayers, as are you.

Thanks all. She pushed for surgery right away. I managed to talk to her an hour or so ago. Everything went well. She's still got her sense of humor, she might make it home for Thanksgiving. Cameo and I will either cook for her, or order a roast Turkey and some fixings from the Food Coop I work at (a few hours a week, in order to get my working member discount).

ped, I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. I hope she is a young 73 so this won't slow her down.

I just heard from a friend who lived in my apt. bldg that the 94 year old woman there is still asking people to pick up bottles of Almaden wine for her. The first time she asked my friend, he didn't understand what she meant by picking up Almaden until she had to spell it out for him that it was wine, lol. I used to pick up bottles of Almaden and groceries for her since her family didn't visit often enough. She is very sharp. She put her son in a nursing home! She was thinking about moving to one herself, but I guess she thinks she can still handle her apt. by herself.

I hope recovery goes well for her. Tell her to take rehab strictly by the book. Pushing too hard can cause a lot of damage.

All the best to you and yours Ped. Everything depends on her attitude. If she pushes to rehab and recover, she will do fine.

I lost my mother last winter. She had almost recovered from some serious illness, and we had to boot her to do her rehab exercises. But she finally gave in and did them and got back on her feet. She was on one of her Sunday jaunts when her heart stopped.
