“I need geek help, LOL... I understand that mcshield.exe is a part of my virus software, but also is the name of a spyware. It runs at 90-100% and my PC is hung up…I go to the task manager and kill the process, but sometimes it starts back up. I’ve searched the ‘net for a solution, but it’s all for a fee… what's the fix?” 10:07:51 AM 11/22/04 “twig, I just got rid of it. Hang on let me check with my IT department and I'll get right back with you” 10:12:10 AM 11/22/04 “Are you running McAfee Anti-Virus software? Have you tried running a spyware detection program like Spybot to clean up your computer? The settings in McAfee could be set to start the virus scan if the previous one is interrupted. I would look at disabling any automatic McAfee scans until you find out if that is your problem.” 10:13:11 AM 11/22/04 “I can tell you that for me it was residing in my startup menu but I don't know how it got there. I think it is a spyware/virus. My IT said it was something fairly new. Waiting for an answer.......” 10:15:27 AM 11/22/04 “Is spyhunter from Enigma ok to run? I hate downloading things...” 10:15:41 AM 11/22/04 “McAffee sucks IMHO. It's either all the way locked down to the point it won't let you do anything without a pop up or it's all the way open. I use the new Fire Fox 1.0 browser and havn't had a pop up or virus sense.” 10:15:59 AM 11/22/04 “I did a search and skiracer uses spybot... I'll try that one...” 10:22:20 AM 11/22/04 “McShield is McAfee Virus Shield. It’s legitimate. The program we got rid of from your computer last week began with “MC” or “MAC” but was not related to McAfee. (I can’t recall exactly what it was named now). It was using that name in order to hide in plain site, since most people would assume that it was McAfee at first glance. If the person is using McAfee then McShield should be running. -Shawn OK, there's the response from my IT. Probably not much help. Oh well hope you figure it out. Spybot is a good one I use it frequently. it works good in combination with another one that does a more thorough search of the harddrive. Do a search. There was an entire thread on this at one point.” 10:35:28 AM 11/22/04 10:37:28 AM 11/22/04 “oh, the other one is Ad-Aware. It always found things that Spybot missed. Especially data-miners.” 10:37:41 AM 11/22/04 10:39:17 AM 11/22/04 “thanks hpm - I'm going to reboot and see if that helped... that spybot thing was pretty funny - download it for free, it found 54 things, but it wants money to delete stuff...LOL” 10:55:46 AM 11/22/04 “twigeater- do you have decent bandwidth? I have Spybot that I can e-mail you that doesn't have the restrictions. It's an older version back when it was freeware. It will remove if you tell it to. It's 3.5 MB. Let me know if you want it or send me an e-mail at work.” 11:02:31 AM 11/22/04 11:05:51 AM 11/22/04 “oops thought spybot was still free” 11:08:35 AM 11/22/04 “An independent review rates Spybot pretty low. I used to used AdAware (LavaSoft) but I've switched. Giant software is the bomb. It's the best I have seen!” 12:11:56 PM 11/22/04 “thank you all! I dunno if it's gone or not, but thanks for the help.” 12:43:39 PM 11/22/04 “That's the bummer with these things. Sometimes they just lay low and ambush you later. Glad to be of help.” 12:46:56 PM 11/22/04 twiggy “Isn't it about time someone popped up and told you, you shouldn't be looking at porn, as that's how you get these things? Just Picking!!!!!!!!” 12:48:22 PM 11/22/04 “LOL... didn't you hear me the first time SS? BITE ME!” 12:56:01 PM 11/22/04 “Not to pick on McAfee (which everyone seems to be doing a good job of already -- I, personally, use Symantec (formerly known as Norton)), but I do know that if you are still using Windows 98 and have an ATI video adapter (connects your computer to your monitor), I do know they have (or used to have) some serious issues between the McAfee software and the drivers for the ATI video adapter. Some of them were so severe, they would just randomly cause the computer to shut down, or the picture would get lost, etc. etc. This is the original reason I dumped McAfee; because my computer wouldn't run with it.” 12:08:02 AM 11/23/04
